Yes the Acer is an excellent spec for the price.. 3.5% quidco.

the acer has a slower processor, not sure it's £100 worth faster, but they are not the same.

Looks very nice - bit too much for me though.

Does it come with firewire?

Ooooo, after a rather nasty experience with LaptopsDirect last week, I've decided to buy a Dell laptop.

I used the following link from the HotUKDeals site to spec the following Inspiron 6400 laptop, with upgraded screen & 256Mb dedicated graphics for £669.82 including VAT & shipping, and then I'd be able to get £55 cashback if I bought through QuidCo, making a total of £615 inclusive:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49516&highlight=dell+inspiron

Inspiron 6400 (NO2643) -
Note: the "NO2643A" is the same model, but costs a lot more. Go figure...
Intel® Core2 Duo Processor T5200(1.6GHz/533MHz/1MB)
Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Basic
Collect & Return, 1 Year Service only
15.4" UltraSharp™ Wide Screen WXGA+ (1440x900) TFT Display with TrueLife™
1024MB 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (2x512)
120GB (5,400rpm) Hard Drive
Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive including software
256MB ATI® Mobility™ Radeon® X1400 HyperMemory™ graphics card
6 Cell, 56Whr Lithium Ion Primary Battery

The only problem being that the Dell website would only let me have Vista Basic
(who would want Vista, without the Aero interface ?!), or pay extra for Visa Business or Ultimate. There was no option for Vista Premium, even though Dell recommends it !

Ironically, if I went in again and recreated an Inspiron 6400 from scratch, then Vista Premium was an option, but the overall price was a lot higher, and things like the 120Gb hard disc suddenly became an expensive option rather than the default (smallest) hard disc available.

I rang the Dell salesline, and tried to explain that this is the laptop I was interested in, and that it'd cost me £669, and I'd get £55 cashback from QuidCo.... and I just wanted this laptop with Vista Premium.

And that's where the trouble started.

Dell didn't understand (either the salesperson or their manager) that QuidCo isn't a third-party laptop seller... they don't keep a stockpile of Dell laptops somewhere... and yes, I would use QuidCo and still buy the laptop from the dell.co.uk website.

So Dell refused to match the price I could get it going via QuidCo.

Has anyone else hit this problem, or does someone have any tips to get around this ?

N02643A Has a 2Ghz cpu and 2 gig of ram so its bound to cost more than the ecode N02643. Both are Inspitron 6400's yes but thats normal.

You can spec up N02647 the same as you want with Vista Premium too for 20p less than your costing ;-)

Go take a look.

Yep I had a similair experience with a Dell sales rep last week. He hadn't heard of Quidco and couldn't grasp the concept. I gave up trying to explain and told him to go and look at the Quidco site.

The £50 Quidco saving equalled the best deal anyway and I got in just before the price went up..

MikeT..

Interested in this deal, but cannot find anything on Dell site about Firewire.. Is it featured on this model.. Also is the upgrade to Vista Business Ultimate worth the cost..

Many thanks..

Fez, look here under tech specs tab http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/featuresdetails.aspx/inspn_6400?c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&~lt=popup
And yes the 6400 does indeed have a firewire port.

Take a look at the sidebar links on my blog for what comes in which flavour of Vista and then figure if you need the extras offered by ultimate.
