Got the price..........now if I ring up will I be able to get a discount for XP...?
banned#9
seriously tempted... but they wont reduce it on the phone... or throw in any extras... any advice?
#10
Phone them again and you'll almost certainly get through to another rep.

Worth the hassle - even if the best you get is an upgrade to a better screen or any freebies thrown in, its worthwhile,

On the same subject i read some guy got a laptop from Dell then latter got a full refund for his copy of XP as he is a Linux programmer see article:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6144782.stm

Does anyone know how easy it is to get a laptop from Dell with no o/s ?
I imagine its like trying to get blood out of a stone :p
#12
It's actually not very tough at all to get refunded for the OS. I was going to do this as I already had a copy of windows. However, be warned that the discount for not having/accepting the license agreement for Vista premium is only £16. And before people come back stating that the full retail copy or upgrade costs far more than that, remember that dell will not pay anything close to retail and is probably a true reflection of what it actually costs them.

I see that the article is about six months old now. I would imagine that following Dell's decision to start shipping Linux machines, they will no longer be willing to do refunds for the OS. If you don't want Windows, they will tell you to buy one of their Linux products. I suspect that any saving gained by opting for Linux will be surprisingly small.

Do Dell supply the retail version or OEM version?
If you bought a million copies of Xp as a resller you'd get a hefty discount too.

yeah, true, it can be hit and miss with the call reps... any idea what should be aiming to achieve when i call... ie warranty, hardware upgrade or discount?

this is a budget machine so dont expect them to do as much as they would for a £600 machine...
#16
Obviously a cash discount would be ideal but your best upgrade would be to a graphics card with dedicated memory or a better screen with a cheaper upgrade being a longer-lasting battery. The likelihood of a sales rep negotiating is closely aligned to where they are against their target so if you’re getting no joy, just make an creative excuse and hang-up before trying again and you’ll almost certainly get through to a different rep.

I bought a laptop off them a couple of weeks ago.

First time i called the best the guy was going to do for me was throw in a carry case for 20 quid. I made a "creative excuse" and said i'd call him back after taking his details for realism's sake.

I then called back and asked for the laptop i wanted. When the new rep had set out my specifications etc i said i wasn't sure about it and that i just wanted to run some things by someone in the first instance. He then threw in an upgrage to a truelife display (worth 40-odd quid), which i accepted.

I then said to him that i noticed they had an ofer on frr delivery, but this deal wasn't avaliable for laptop i wanted - i said i wasn't too hapopy about paying delivery. He went off the phone and came back on seconds later saying that he would do that for me also. Effectively £100 off.

Mine was 530 quid all in - that's for a Core II Duo Processor, 2GB RAM, 120GB HD, and all the rest, so you dont have to be spending a fortune to get a better deal, if that makes sense.

Be persistent with them - eventually you'll get something!

They supply a dell restore cd. It's just a disc with a ghost image of the machine as it was shipped.

It's extremely difficult to get anything on headline deals such as this, the profit margin is going to be extremely tight, if you could get an upgrade on the battery, I would bite their hand off.

Negotiating discounts on £500/£600+ machines is very easy, and almost all reps will play ball once you reach that sort of price point. One guy also let slip once that these "discounts" are factored in, and they have sheets with what they can offer as sweeteners according to what they have overstock of. Only anecdotal evidence, so don't quote me.

Hi
I have been looking to get a new dell laptop for some time (my current one is celebrating its 8th birthday!) I am very interested in the two deals posted today, this one and the one with for £327 odds.

I would want to upgrade that one to the Amd turion TL52 (making it £363.07) but since this one is only £20 more I am undecided.

Could someone please tell me the difference between the AMD TL52 processor and the Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2080 Processor?

Many thanks!

Would it be wise to go for the machine with Windows Vista even though I would prefer to run XP?

….I could format the machine & install my own XP but then I would still have the copy of Vista for a later date.

What do you think?
#23
is this a better cpu or the turion x2?

Yep, good plan. Back up the hard drive to a usb external drive with ghost or some other software then format and instal your XP. Once service pack 1 is out for Vista reinstal that.
Or do what I do which is to buy another laptop drive at the right price and slot in whichever one you fancy, xp or vista ;-)

Top tip Mike....Thanks.

Rang dell to buy this at 2040 (they finish at 2100) to see what i could swing.
I got truelife for 12 quid, an upgrade from 1024 to 2048 for 50 quid, with this discount i treat myself to a snap on cover.
OS is xp Multimedia

TOTAL = £483.58

AMD would argue not a lot and I'd be more interested in the graphics card that comes with the AMD laptop, that makes it a much more interesting deal as the laptop will be better than the pentium deal with the poorer graphics. I'm so close to ordering the AMD with the upgrade to the TL52. I am pretty sure if you phone Dell and do some haggling they would cut some cash off.

if you are still confused then a suitable google search will give you some proper facts and figures on the differences between the pentium and the AMD. Although it's not a great deal now that AMD have improved their cpu's.

Thanks davelfc much appreciated!

I wouldn't imagine the average person using the laptop for browsing the web & such would see any difference between the Intel & AMD processors.

It's also worth bearing in mind that the 6400 has a firewire port where the 1501 hasn't....just in case you want to connect a camcorder to the laptop!

this is a superb deal, however there has been no talk with regards to the Inspiron 9400...not a great deal i know however, £600 for a 9400 surely a better deal!

Hi just one question. about 2-3 weeks ago i was thinking of buying the inspiron 6400. And when i went to customise the laptop i had the option of upgrading the graphics to an ati x1400. Now that option is not there. Would i be able to upgrade this to a dedicated graphics if i call sales?
