Another great deal Mike!

Looks like a great price for the spec. I guess that they are trying to clear out the old model with the new ones coming on stream.

However, I think you need to correct the reference to 3yr hardware support as the price you quoted is just for 1 year.

Thanks again Mike.

Sorry for being ignorant, but what's with all this new model old model thing? What do you mean by newer models? Inspiron with the new Santa Rosa chip or something?

Now corrected, thanks for that ;-) too much of a hurry today, lots happening all at once.

I still havent got the laptop that I have been looking for (cancelled the non firewire inspiron).
Was ideally looking for a Core 2 Duo, but is this really going to be much difference in performance? I know its only 533MHZ, but it is a 1.86GHZ.

The actual chip isnt in the performance tables, but from judging on other core duo's, it looks like it could well be half decent?

Is it really going to be any different to say a 1.6GHZ Core 2 Duo? I would assume that this would be as quick?

Or is it advisable to get a core 2duo under £500 when they appear? :)

Yes, Dell is now offering laptops with the new Santa Rosa chipset. See the main Dell UK site for details.

Thanks...Yeah, been to the site but no idea which laptop has the latest santa rosa chipset. Only stated Intel Core 2 Duo...how do you identify whether it has the latest chipset or not?

£622, is quite a heavy price...but it had everything!

if someone can find me a laptop, with those specs at that price i'll marry them here and now!
#10
Yep, that is a heavy price.
I just need a Core2Duo...
1GB or 2GB Ram,
80GB + HDD
Firewire

But want to keep it around £500, and not Packard Bell etc.

Could have got it before for £470

If i phone up Dell can i get the ATI X1400 graphics card as it aint available here

There is no longer a graphics option for this model, its end of life so what you see is what you can get. 6400 will not be with us much longer...

Whats better:

1. This deal

2. The Inspiron 1501 found here, less the printer, with 9 cell battery, 4 year warranty, tl58 processor and trulife screen for £514 inc vat and delivery

Thanks
#16
I got one of these last time around although got a graphics card with it. Great machine. Dell haven't paid Quidco though.

yeah id suggest nothing less than getting a Core 2 Duo, i cant see these new laptops being much of an improvement if any from the odler models..they have a 'newer' processor...doesn't make them better! and deffinatly does not justify charging £150 more.

Most of these new models don't even have 256mb Graphcards even...=\

i don't know, maybe it's time to just get on with it and buy..my router came today! haa

What do u lot think about Dell, especially MikeT?? Are they a good company really, are there products made more on the cheap side or something compared 2 other companies??? would u buy computers off then etc??
#19
They are the best company, and they can be cheap if you phone up to order and haggle, complain about the price so they will lower it.
#20
Darn it. I have ordered the InspironTM 1501 (N06153A) last night for £445. Now i find i can get the above for roughly the same price.

What is the difference between the two apart from the processor. Do they have the same number of usb ports etc?

Where can i find how many usb etc a dell laptop has?

also is it easy for me to cancel my order? I may keep it if they lower the price. is this possible?
#21
Had a DELL desktop for years now bought this laptop - haven't seen anything cheaper. Vista business doesn't include windows media centre though.

After checking the website provided by uncle buck which shows the differences between the 1501 and 6400 i want to go for the 6400 which i feel is a better deal and it also has a firewire connection.

I think the 6400 is a better spec. The 1501 i ordered had TL56 processsor. Apart from that the spec is similar. The bonus with 6400 is that it comes with a 1 year support and not 90 days. Although there is no free dell printer this does not bother me. Also there is an option for a better screen with the 6400.

So should i go for 6400? I am not deep into computer spec etc so i don't know which is a better deal regarding processors etc.

If i need to cancel is it best to phone, chat or email? Have checked the status of the 1501 it is showing pre production.

Thanks for your advice
[mod]#26
Given the choice I would go for the 6400. You best phone to cancel an order if you need to.

Thanks Mike for confirming my views.

Is it best to go for truelife screen when ordering 6400?

Thats a biggy, I prefer the truelife but it does suffer from reflections a lot, its a personal choice thing. Take a look at one if you can before committing. Even go to pc world and look at some screens in there to get a feel as its going to be hard to live with if you dont like it.
#29
Truelife screen verses ordinary screen…..

Personally I don’t think that Truelife (TL) screens are any better than the ordinary mat finished screens.

Comparing 2 laptops side by side in my house, one with a TL screen & the other with an ordinary screen, I could see no real difference in the quality…both were displaying a photograph taken by me.

As Mike points out a TL screen will suffer from reflections where as a mat screen won’t.

My choice would be an ordinary mat screen….but that’s just my opinion!

Best not post the pic here as its a bit big!

The 640M (Silver) has a truelife screen, the D620 has a matt screen, you can see some reflection on the truelife one.

yea looking back it was a cracking deal...but you try find that deal now, it's nowhere to be seen! =[ ..and the worse part, there isn't anything released that matches up to it don't think. A dedicated 256mb Radeon, Core 2 Duo and 2Gig upgraded RAM on a 17" for £622...that was HOT even though it got no ratings at all!

we're stuck with these new models now, gotta appreciate the time Mike spends on here dealing with all the questions ect. Hats off to you Mike!
sadly for me, compared tot he early deals there is nothing that really offers value for money! BUT, nothing to do now apart from buy..sod waiting another 6 weeks haha!

MikeT,

After having these discussions with you previously… can you give me your personal opinion on whether its worth paying the extra for the 1.73 core2duo Toshiba that I posted?
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78044 Its £500, but only 128MB graphics (tho my sister wont play games on it or anything).
The Dell has 2GB ram, (but you can upgrade that a lot easier than changing the processor) and I would get the 9 cell battery, making this around £460 I guess.

I do try and compare the processors using your blogspot links, but most of them are never there so you have to judge from similar specs.

Or would the cheap AMD alternative on offer from Dell also be worth a punt with the TL58 upgrade for about £440?

Basically, I am thinking ahead (and wondering whether the core2duo will come into its own with future software etc, giving significant performance improvements?

I keep confusing myself. :(

Thanks
[mod]#34
:oops:How confused do you think I am! I dont get to play with all these dells, only the ones I buy for myself and I cant keep buying them when new stuff comes out. I am finding it extremely difficult this past week or so to keep up with everything thats happening at once tech wise.

I would have to swing towards the dell just on the spec presented and knowing the product and support you can get. I know the Indians can be a bit flakey sometimes but they do get there in the end and I have yet to have an experiance with dell aftercare that didnt end up in my favour.
#35
Ok, thanks anyway Mike :)
Ive always gone for Dells, but for some reason I have it in my head that a core 2 duo is a must .. dont want to be left 2 far behind :P
#36
smashed of your not going to be playing games then the Dell should do. Just turn on the side "gadgets" and extra on Vista if it struggles but with 2gb of RAM it should be fine.

I thought that the core2duo would make a big difference when video editing (it will be used for that semi-frequently). The AMDs etc seem to perform badly in the comparative tests for things like that.
#38
yea its Core 2 Duo for me, i was even tempted to go for an XPS...christ they get expensive but the spec was bang-on! with tech developing so fast i think now it's a must to get the best processor you can!..Core 2 Duo!

just my opinion, i'll be doing alot of vid editing and multimedia tasking, i need the best processor poss...and im a bit of a geek for games so RAM and graphics are also a high priority! hence my £650 budget!
#39
i take it 6400 is coming to an end?

when will it be replaced?

am i best buying this now or wait till next wednesday?

i have cancelled the 1501. was hoping the rep will give me a discount to keep it. Then again since i am buying a laptop to last for a few years so having a firewire will help later on

I called up sales to try and get a better deal than what was specified on the web. The person I spoke to threw in Vista Home Premium and Truelife screen for the same price, but also tried to get me to spend a bit more offering a T5300 1.73Ghz processor and vista ultimate for £600. Its over £150 extra but is it worth spending that much for what is basically a processor upgrade to Core2Duo? I'm not too fussed with Ultimate, Home Premium will do for me.

What choice should I make?
