Most? - most of the general public still 'buy' Mcafee - Norton or one of the others.

I know 'most' of 'you' say use AVG or Avast, but AVG made my PC lock up when I tried it 6 months ago - one £5 Mcafee OEM disc is working fine.

Previous 6400 went tits up.

This looked like a viable alternative, but no display upgrade to 1400x900 is what stopped me, great find though mikeT who arn't fussy about display resolutions :)

I think this Acer clearance laptop from Currys is a better offer:

• Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 Processor 1.68GHz
• 667MHz
• 2MB Cache
• 1GB RAM
• 80GB Hard Drive
• DVD Super Multi Dual Layer Drive
• 15.4" TFT Widescreen
• Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
• 224MB Intel 950 GMA Graphics
• 1 year FREE warranty

Better processor and much cheaper (£330 with Quidco) than the laptop in the OP

Did you order that dickslash? I'm thinking of getting it myself :)
#9
Not wireless, 1GB less RAM, slightly poorer graphics on that Acer one. Plus Dells have a better build quality IMO.
#10
It says much for Currys that they don't know that a T5500 processor is a 1.66, not a 1.68 :whistling:

It's refurb, personally I'd rather have new - I know it has a 12 month guarantee, but my experience of their refurb products isn't good; they repair, but I'd rather have it with me, working, than with them being constantly repaired. ;-)

er, I think you'll find that the Acer laptop is wireless. Agreed, it does have a 1GB & graphics deficiency in comparison to the Dell one...but on the flip side, it does have a better processor. Also, it's quite cheap to buy 1GB RAM for laptops nowadays, so for about £45 more, u'll be able to get 2GB RAM, plus a better processor, for cheaper than the price quoted for the Dell.

My mate ordered one...I was thinking of getting one too. Just reading the reviews on it before taking the plunge...my mate's set his one up and so far, it seems like an amazing purchase! Excellent quality throughout!
#13
The Acer hasn't got a Firewire port, either :)
#14
Does the currys Acer laptop come with a spare slot for RAM or is it taken up by 2x512?
#15
No, 2 x 512mb.
#16
Sorry to hijack the thread mike

Dickslash, i was considering this aswell : http://www.microdirect.co.uk/(19554)Acer-Aspire-5633WLMI-Notebook-Intel-Core.aspx

the laptop can take upto 4GB RAM...so replace the 2x512MB with 2x2GB to yield somekind of super laptop with mind-controlling powers:p

same laptop but with 40 GB extra HD space...so not really worth the extra £100! P.S. It should be noted that the Acer one comes with 120GB HD despite showing up as 80GB on the website!

You never said in your post that it was wireless.

So for £45 more (and £330 after Quidco for the laptop makes £375) you get an Acer with poorer graphics rather than a Dell for about £378 (after Quidco)?

I'd be very wary about buying a laptop from Currys when they've managed to get the speed of the processor and the HD size wrong in the one advert as well.

You're right to be sceptical...but I've ordered several refurb laptops from Currys for work and never had a single problem. Furthermore, it all boils down to individual preference...if u want a sturdier laptop with better graphics, go for the Dell. If however, you prioritize a better processor over graphics (like myself), then go for the Acer.

These Dell deals are not as good as the Vostro launch price. Kicking myself now as it was under £300!
#22
Vostro 1700 price fell at least £100 today, I ordered th £622 one earlier today.

not really after a desktop replacement. The 15.4" screen is the max I would use as portability is restricted with 17". The spec of your order is excellent value for money.
#24
Indeed which is why I champion it so much.

If you take the laptop out at least once a fortnight you are right, but if it's only occasionally, the 17" offer is superior tbh.

Hi
I am new to this, but I am considering buying this for my son but he is a bit concerned whether the Intel® Media Accelerator 950 Graphics Up to 256MB shared graphics memory would play his games eg sims 2.
Can anyone help?
#26
how long do thet take to go through the process
#27
margg i would not expect great performance from that gfx on any game that came out after 2005.

abbout what do you mean?, you edit your system, add to basket, and checkout. the charging process is quite quick, if you were thinking of ordering then calling to cancel in the hope of haggling an upgrade you need to be fast and on the ball really
