I'd prefer this one, which is £65 cheaper when combined with discount codes.

Compare Apples to apples, the dell comes with 3 year onsite warranty.

Sorry. I'll check with you before expressing an opinion next time. In my experience, if a laptop doesn't go wrong in the first year, it's unlikely to go wrong within three. I also prefer hp build quality to dell, and 160gig hard drives to 120.

These are still current on Dells site and with just 1gig of ram and 3yrs warranty are £527 so a saving to be had from SVP.

Note that the warranty runs from 01/15/07 So lets call that 2yrs warranty

Now showing as out of stock though it still allows you to basket the notebook.

I wouldn’t be surprised if 01/15/07 is a typo as the other models have the date in dd/mm/yy format which this obviously isn’t.
There are other 6400s with a full 3 year warranty so check the details.

I bought my 6400 in May this year for about £499 (if I remember correctly) and paid an additional for next business day warranty (£60 for two years).

All in all, its working a treat - although I get some weird noises now and then coming from the bottom of the laptop and then it goes away and then it comes back... you get the point lol

I'm using this laptop as we speak, but mine has a Core Duo 2 proccesor - I got it on new on ebay for £400 :D

It's a great laptop, recommended, but check ebay first.

ONLY problem with the above laptop its not got a truelife screen, otherwise I would buy one in a snap.

I bought 4 of these for work from dell direct identical spec but with a bag for £2000 (this is via my account manager tho) so this is a very good deal.

Yep same noises... glad to know im not the only one... strange thing is, I took the hard drive out and cleaned it - although there was not a single sign of dust on it which made me wonder.

Wander down to your local garage and ask if you can blow out the cooling vents with an air line (make sure its dry air) and this may clear the problem as its a fluff magnet under there.

are you sure that is in not the intel cpu whine? Is it louder under battery use and does it go away when your cpu is stressed?

You can't clean the actual hard drive since it should be sealed up lol.

I know 2 people looking for laptops at the moment.

1) General email, internet browsing, running Openoffice appications, some basic games.

2) Homework, Openoffice, Internet browsing, quite a few games, some quite new.

Would this laptop be suitable for 1 or 2 and reliable? Is Dell after-sales OK?
The gaming doesn't have to be full-tilt....just playable

Thanks in advance for any advice.

With some of the eye candy turned off the 6400 with onboard graphics will play games such as Far Cry quite well, later fast action games will suffer though.
