Dell seem to have given us few bargains this week with most units staying at last weeks price levels, this one is reduced again this week to an all time low price for this ecode.

Remember to buy via Quidco for further cashback and reduce the warranty to minimum for the above price.

nice price
thanks Mike

Yes I agree but what's the idea behind the "trial version" of the integrated soundcard????..obviously the chip is there so the trial can only apply to the Audigy software????...I'm confused.
#3
there are 2 versions of the sound card software. the basic (free) or the audigy (costs extra). i bought the audigy software AFTER i got the laptop and it worked out to be around £11 to upgrade i.e. cheaper than selecting the upgrade from dell.

also you might want to consider the 9 cell battery upgrade. it makes the battery life of this laptop very respectable (up to 5-6 hours in my experience, depending on use - compared with <2hrs on most other similarly-priced laptops).

i also got a telephone call about a month after purchase offering me the 3yr onsite warranty for around half of the advertised price.

there is much debate as to which type of screen is better - matt or truelife. i got matt and i find it better as theres no reflection on it, compared to the truelife screen which (although having a better resolution) reflects too much when you're in a bright environment.
#4
by the way how did you find it at this price - if you go via [url]www.dell.co.uk[/url] then it costs £599
#5
IMO it also works out better to pay around £5 for the OS disc. Otherwise you're hard disk is partitioned and the extra partition contains the reinstall data. So you lose a good few GB off the hard drive.
[mod]#6
Here's the price for the upgraded battery.

9 Cell, 80Whr Lithium Ion Primary Battery [add £11.75]

Mark, the price is for this ecode 307-N096M1 with 1yr warranty, there are other 640M's with different specs and prices available on the Dell website but I chose this one to highlight.

Although the hard drive has a hidden partition with the os and all the drivers on it I do find that its a godsend to most buyers as if they manage to make a right hash of something within hours of purchase they can with 2 keystrokes at boot time reinstal the laptop hard drive to exactly as it was when they first booted it on recieving it from Dell. You also have the chance to make one backup copy of the os when you recieve the laptop.
#7
yeah if you select the same thing through the website its around £120 more - you must have a code for a special offer or something. I was just wondering where it was from.
[mod]#8
There is no special offer code Mark, just go to the main page of Dells site and type the ecode for this offer into the boxes 307-N096M1 and it will take you to the same page that the "go to deal" button does.
There are 5 different ecodes for 640M's this week and after that each offer is configurable.
HTH.

[SIZE=2]Definitely a good price :) Thanks Mike![/SIZE]

[SIZE=2]As usual, the battery upgrade is worth spending the extra £11 on, as Mike already mentions above :D[/SIZE]
#10
hmmm i would want to wipe off all the rubbish that dell have put on the laptop (and really slows down booting up) and start with a clean operating system. i think using about 5-10 GB as a backup of the OS is a huge waste of HDD space. its pretty self explanatory to reinstall from the cd.

anyway i guess its a personal preference, but as laptops have small HDDs compared to dekstops i would rather get the most for my money

markwills is correct. If you want to spend more use the ecode 307-N096M5 to buy the same system for £599 instead of £482.

Reduce the warranty to minimum for the above prices

The problem with wiping the hard drive clean is you lose all the drivers, and that is gonner take forever to get the back.

By drivers i mean thigs like the sound drivers, graphics, media direct buttons, wifi etc, theres loads. I really want to wipe clean my Dell but im afraid i wont be able to get it back with all the original drivers.

By the way i have a 40gb hard drive and the dell partition takes up 12gbs:x
[mod]#14
Why not use Ghost to copy the contents of the hard drive over to a spare pc drive or external hard drive and you can then do as you like with the original, formatting to your hearts content.
I back up all our family laptops and pc's to an external hard drive and then just do incrimentaal backups to be sure of keeping my data safe.
#15
What is 'Ghost' and how do i do that.

If i do do it could i put it back to its original state with it?
[mod]#16
Ghost is software to take back up images of your hard drive contents and store them ready to replace all or even just 1 file from the backup to your drive if the need arises. You can also make incrimentaal backups (just stuff that has changed since the last backup) on an automated timescale basis or ad hock as you wish.

Ghost here

You will find it cheaper no doubt but this was easiest ;)

I still use ver 9 but 10 is now available. Acronis true image is another product that is well thought of that does the same thing.

12GB - that is exactly my point! That's about 30% of your HDD wasted. Definitely worth reclaiming in my opinion!

As for drivers - they are all accessible on the dell website, and are regularly (well, ok occasionally) updated with new drivers. If you need a link I can PM you.

LOL

I would just like to mention the following about this laptop...

I recently purchased one and I have been extremely impressed with the laptop itself (it is very portable - light & good battery life) and also with dell who have fixed every single problem I've had - to the extent where they sent me a new replacement laptop. I only got the basic 1yr CAR warranty!

However I'm thinking of upgrading the warranty to the 3yr at home service for a discounted price of £90 - a lady from dell rang me and offered me this discount a few weeks after buying the laptop. ;-)

Hi I am looking to buy one of these and note the recommendations to upgrade the battery ... i'm sure I have seen somewhere on the website that the upgraded battery sticks out of the back of the laptop .... can anyone confirm this ... and say by how much. Thanks
#21
Thansk MikeT, ill look into that.

But i think iv had it with my current Dell, and unless they bring an amazing offer for a top spec laptop within the next few weeks im gonner be moving to a MacBook Pro or a Rock Peggesus 665 - i only need to dig out £1000 from somwhere :(

Yes it does stick out a little bit. The 9 cell battery is about 1.5 times the size of the 6 cell battery. It sticks out the back about 2cm and I reckon it looks OK. If you look on the net you can find some photos. Personally I don't think that it detracts from the look of the laptop.

Some ppl report that it makes the laptop easier to hold if you are working whilst holding the laptop rather than placing it on a surface (!!)

It is definitely worth it for the extra battery time.

What??!! I ordered a 9-cell when I bought my Inspiron 6000 a few months ago. Should the bigger battery also stick out of this model. You have me worried now that I paid for a bigger battery but didn't get it. How do you tell them apart?
[mod]#24
Larger Inspiron 6000 battery does not stick out, your safe Confiteor ;)

Just make sure yours isnt on the recall list, visit Dells site to be sure.

Super post. If the wife agrees I'm in for one. She has the final say with regard to one for my daughter - think I have stated this before in similar posts, I always get overuled at the last minute. However, the latest small screen, for increased portability I'm told, is the must have for Uni.
Yours, fingers crossed she say YESSSSSSS...:)

Is the Ultra sharp screen upgrade worth while? It is £23.50?
#28
I think this is very good price for specs, I was lookin for this 640 series for quite a long, any idea till what date this price would be available ?? I can buy this one like after 10 days when I will have more finance available...:)

The "truelife" screen is available as an extra option when you buy the 640m, I'm not sure of the exact price, but its around £20.

It gives you a higher resolution and a shiny (rather than matt) finish to the screen.

On most forums people are divided 50:50 between the screen types, and there is no clear preference.

My opinion is that

a) at this screen size (14.1") there is no need for a higher resolution than that on the default screen, and in fact will make fonts & text too small for comfortable reading on the screen

b) the glossy finish may be OK if you're watching a film in the dark but when the lights are on, or you are outside in the sun, the glass acts like a mirror. Remember the CRT days when you could see the reflection of the window on your screen? Truelife screens are said to be the same.

I got this with a default tft screen, and I think its an excellent machine (even though I paid about £100 more than this deal... grrr...) and very portable.

Dell change the deals each Thursday and I have no idea if it will be the same price or more next Thursday...sorry.

Buy it on your credit card if your at a point where the repayment time wont confilct with the lack of funds. Dell reserve funds at time of order but dont take the money till delivery (around 5 days)

Thanks Markwills - addresses the issue well.

He who hesitates is lost....

I would like to swear now but the filter wont let me, yes they just hiked the price, just like they did yesterday with the M1210.

Nasty Mr Dell, thats not a nice thing to do at all!!:x

[SIZE=2]gone,,,,.... tooo slow to act :( I was thinking of buying it after 10 days dell did not even gave me 3 hrs but I am very hopeful there would be a better one soon [/SIZE]
[mod]#37
Dell have just put the price back down so I unexpired this deal again!!

If you go for this deal I would recommend upgrading the ram to this:

1024MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (2x512) [add £11.75]

Its not a lot of extra money and it does mean the memory is as fast as possible.
#38
SOrry Mike, I checked it before and clicked expired on it.

Looks like one to grab quickly...
[mod]#39
NP emma ;) Its in Dells hands how long it stays at this price, trouble with dell is that even if you put it in your basket at this price any increase is likely to always auto update your basket too!
[admin]#40
Dell is always a case of grab it while it's hot. I don't usually recommend buying without thinking but often that is the best thing to do with Dell, at least then you have it and if you decide a day later you don't want you can just cancel the order.
