Recommended upgrades are: Bigger battery (9 cell) for up to 6+ hrs mobile use (add £13)Sticks out the back by 2cm which some may not like.

Higher res 14.1" UltraSharp™ Wide Screen WSXGA (1440x900) TFT Display with TrueLife™ add £24. This is a shiney reflective screen which some love and others dont so try to see someones in action before going for this, I love mine now I have got used to it, but it does act a bit like a mirror on dark images.

Luckily the 512meg of ram on this is 1 module fitted which will be under the keyboard allowing you the easy job of fitting another from Crucial in the base of the machine. (Just 2 screws and a cover)

I recently had one of these delivered with 1.66 core2duo and hi res screen, compared with my 6400 I think I prefer this one as its just a little smaller in size so fits a 14" laptop case, but in use doesnt feel smaller.
The graphics chip will grab system ram as it needs it so I do recommend the extra ram from crucial. I only have one game I play (far cry) and it runs fine with bells and whistles turned off on this machine. Recommended!

2cm and £13 def worth it for the 9cell, I also have a inspiron and they are well built, highly recommended.

Ram options for the 640m from crucial:

Choose the 3rd from last CT534700 strip at £49.34 to bring the total to 1gig of ram though the laptop is quite happy at 512meg for non intense graphic use for now so upgrade later when the fininces have recovered ;-)
Dont forget there is a voucher for crucial and of course Quidco too!

Interestingly the fsb on this runs at 667megs so in reality 667 meg ram would be the best (fastest) option, but as Dell have seen fit to only put 533meg ram in these there is no point in fitting 1 strip of 667 meg as it will be run at the lower speed, could save an extra £1 or so though! (CT534703)

There is barely 5% speed difference between 667mhz and 533mhz ram on machines like this.
However 667mhz sticks are actually cheaper ;-)
Forgot about vouchers and quidco, ta.

I bought one of these and it hasn't let me down. Would recommend it to anyone even if it wasn't in some kind of special offer ;-)

I've gone for an Inspiron 6400. As standard this has 80Gb hard drive, 1Gb RAM, free upgrade to Vista Pro, 15.4" screen. Think all the other details are the same.

Cost is £548 delivered. Worth the extra I think?
#8
Welcome to HotUKDeals mbriody :) Which model Dell are you saying comes out at £548? Thanks.
#9
Doh! Inspiron 6400  I should have read that properly :)

Yes that's a very good price for the spec ;-)
#10
Yeah, for 19 quid you get double the RAM, a bigger screen and hard drive and free Vista. Oh and it has a DVD RW as well.

No brainer unless I'm missing something?

Incidentally I went for screen, battery and bluetooth upgrades.
#11
Definitely worth it :) Do you have the eValue Code for that particular configuration?

Thanks!
#12
Code is UKDHSONL-N11646

Reduce the warranty cover, select MCE to Vista Premium free upgrade
#13
Thanks for that :) I'll check out if we've already posted that particular deal ;-)
#14
Yeah was posted but different spec at the beginning of the month. This thread might help for any info you want: http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31628

Dell Wireless 1500 Draft 802.11n Dual-Band Wireless Mini-Card, for Core 2 Processors [add £6] Intel® Pro Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g Mini PCI Wireless LAN Card for Core 2 Duo Processors [Included in Price]

To use the wireless card you will need a Wireless Router. If you have one of the newer BT Home Hubs this has a wireless router inside it. If you do have one of these go for:

> Intel® Pro Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g Mini PCI Wireless LAN Card for Core 2 Duo Processors

If you do not have a wireless router the Wireless card will not allow you to connect this way. You can still run a Cat 5 cable between your normal router and the laptop, or use the USB cable to connect.

thanks i have a netgear wireless router

I did actually post in this thread http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32807 to let everyone know that it (the 6400) was still available this week albeit for a £1 more ;-)
I'm glad you found it a good deal and went for one, I have a 2Ghz core2duo one of those 6400's with 256meg Graphics, the top screen, 2gig ram, 9cell and BT but believe it or not as good as it is, I prefer the 640M.
It fits in a 14" bag so is easy to carry round and spec'd up with good screen, extra ram and BT its a lovely it of kit.
The 6400 seems more like a desktop replacement to me.

Anyway the reason I post several different laptop deals each week is so you have the best available offers from Dell for you to choose from, some may seem much better value than others but I hope there is something to suit everyone.

Glad your enjoying yours too

Jimm, just go with this one (Intel® Pro Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g Mini PCI Wireless LAN Card for Core 2 Duo Processors) it will be fine.

Enjoy your purchase! And welcome to HUKD :)
