Upgrades:

9 Cell, 80Whr Lithium Ion Primary Battery add £23.50 but remember it sticks out the back a little ;-)
14.1" UltraSharp™ Wide Screen WSXGA (1440x900) TFT Display with TrueLife™ add £23.50 suffers for some with reflections but I like it.

Thanks for this Mike :)

About Dell's batteries Mike, they've got the 4 cell, 6 cell or 9 cell,

I wouldn't go for the 4 cell so it's a case of the 6 or 9 cell battery and i can't decide which, does the 9 cell battery stick out of the back and look awkward?

Looked at a couple of the cheaper ones, I only wanted a basic one but this seemed to offer better value, the cheap one isn't always the best value I don't think.

Yes, and this principle doesn't just apply to laptops. If you imagine that £X is added by the retailer (in order to make a profit) then the cheaper the product, the greater percentage the mark-up is.

With regards to the 640m being good value - this is only a good value if you want a portable laptop. You are paying a bit extra for a smaller screen and more compressed unit, along with a very good battery life and a light laptop. If you want a cheap laptop and are happy with a desktop replacement, the 640m is not the laptop for you ;-)

I have an HP widescreen P4 laptop which is really a desktop replacment and not at all paractical for use on the move. The battery last at best 30 mins!!

Yip - P4 processors are not what one would describe as "mobile"

Nice in the winter to keep warm by, till the battery dies :)

Please excuse me for being a total novice when it comes to laptops but can someone tell me what would be the best for a first laptop. I would like one mainly for the internet on the move and I have no idea what you need to connect to the internet.

Thanks
#13
you want something small. a 12" perhaps and they usually have longer battery life due to smaller screen size.

I doubt you could beat the 640m's battery life for this price. I can get up to 6-7 hours if wifi is turned off. I would imagine that a 12" laptop would have a smaller battery.
#15
Thanks, I dont mind paying extra for the 640 but what is the difference with these and as I say I dont know what you need to connect to the internet on the move.

Go for the N card as its the same price, its backward compatable with 11a,b,g and the hype tells us its Vista compatable and uses less battery.

Thanks Mike, so you dont need anything else to connect to the internet?
[mod]#18
Well a hotspot would be nice! You will need to be somewhere that has a wifi free connect when not at home. Or a wifi modem/router when you are at home.

I ordered a 640m ( N026M2) 1 March, following what seemd a good deal on HDUK ( I don't know too much about lap tops by the way).

Took a couple of upgrades - the 9 cell battery and 1024 MB 667 MHL Dual Channel, which one or two peoplel had sugegsted would be good value. Also had 3 year free McFee Security and Vista Business but no free carry case.

Total price was £564.07. Seems like this was a better deal price wise, but....

Delivery was advsied as 9 March. Just had email from Dell saying that revised delivery date is now 27 March.

Think I will cancel and get something else, probbaly the Inspiron 15.42 , as will get a larger screen size.
#20
Thats a long wait. I ordered mine on Monday evening and it was despatched on Tuesday for delivery to me tomorrow.
#21
Stu

Think it must be cos I had the upgrades. You are very lucky
#22
I've just checked my order status and it's now in the UK at Coventry so hopefully it's en route.

I had the basic machine and added a larger battery so I suppose it's from stock.
#23
Surprise, surprise.

Call from Dell this afternoon, saying that they will be delivering this Friday!
#24
Perhaps they read your posts on here!!

Update from today now with 160GB (5,400 rpm) Sata Hard Drive Still same price!!
#26
But no carry case included today, it was yesterday. Trade off with the extra hdd storage I guess.
#27
When I bought my 640m (about 6 months ago) I phoned up and haggled a free carry case (worth around £30) so deffo worth a try

Can you run the Vista aero interface on the integrated graphics, or do you need to disable that?
#32
Free case is back today too
#33
It looks a very good deal and I am tempted

I wonder if I could squeeze anything else out of them if called? perhaps the tft upgrade?

You could try for a free carry bag (that's what I asked for) - without it your laptop will get bumped around quite a bit!

Hi all,

I just joined. I am new in UK and probably will stay only for 6 months before returning to india.
Can someone suggest as to what would be the best buy in a laptop (new).
I am quite tempted by the 640M, which is now for £499, but there is also the 6400 for £410.
I am not to keen on portaility just want a desktop replacement mainly to access internet and maybe play an occasional game

Thanks in advance
Raj
