Want it with XP Pro? then go here

I have a 640m - great laptop.

Mine was higher spec - T5600, 2 gig 667mhz ram, 9 cell battery, 160gig HDD, Ultrasharp 1440x900 screen, Vista Home Prem etc. I got it though the office account at £450+ vat (including rucksack).

I'd highly recommend this laptop to anyone

i recieved this machine a few months ago and have had nothing but problems with it, first it came with vista which is a complete nightmare, not sure if xp was available then, but most importantly the machine was and still is faulty, afte ri installed xp and the hard drive gradually filledu up over the weeks, the machine started to make a wired screeching sound if i clicked on suomething or it did an operation, that i could live with but the worst thing is once in a while the system completely locks up, and nothings works, the only way to come out of it is by holding down the power button, i bought this machine for Djing cuz it had a large hardisk and is quite portanle, the last thing i'd want it to do is freeze it the middle of a set, im sure u understand.
But none the less Dell have been very helpful they sent someone to replace the ram and Hardrive but the problem still persists, the engineer mentioned it could be the cpu and i think he might be right, i contacted them again and they say theyre sending someone round to collect it and examine it at theyre service centre but in the mean time what am i suppose to do without a computer? this is all very inconvienient for me and i knew i was taking a risk when i bought a Dell, however the price is good for what u get its just the build quality which is dodgey, but this is in no way knocking Mike's post, i actually bought the machine for £550 through one of his posts a few months back, hopefully Dell will sort out my machine for good before the 12 month warrenty expires.
[mod]#4
Well I too have a 640M and I am very pleased with mine, you just got unlucky, I would ask for a replacement machine if I had your problems.
#5
I bought pretty much this spec from Dell Outlet (with Windows Media) a few months back and it has - so far - been a great machine.

If you feel tempted to increase the battery power to the 9 cell, beware: the 9 cell increases the bulk of the machine and I was able (thanks HUKD !) to swap for a 6 cell. The 6 cell certainly provides a few hours power, enough for most use.
[mod]#6
And the 9 cell sticks out the back a bit but some of us dont mind ;-)

Hehe, my crystal ball is in for service today so I cant tell sorry.

Wouldnt I like to have Dells plans 2 weeks in advance, we could jump on the misprices in a big way then.

Sorry you will have to keep an eye open here each Thursday morning from 6am for the bargains.

whats better the 6400 or the 640m ?

whats better the 6400 or the 640m ?
Depends. If you want a "desktop replacement" then go for the 6400 as it has a bigger screen. The 640m is primarily a "highly portable" laptop - it's small & light but therefore has a smaller screen. Get the 6400m if it's going to be sitting on your desk, get the 640m if you also have a desktop and want a portable machine to use whilst travelling.

PS I travelled to Australia with my 640m and I can recommend it as being very light, very compact with an excellent battery life especially if you choose the 9 cell option (the battery does stick out the back of the laptop a little, but doesn't look bad). Also I would definitely go for WinXP not Vista, but that's personal preference!
[mod]#13
Ones 14" screen and easier to transport, the others 15.4" and not so easy ;-)
#14
do u think they can give me 1?
#15
Just curious...a couple of weeks ago I was looking for a 19 inch widescreen flat screen for my desktop PC and my friend told me not to even bother (ie. get a bigger one instead) as there's hardly any space on the screen due to the low resolution(?). Now if this is true for a 19 inch widescreen surely it will be even worse with this laptop's 14 inch wide screen? Or do they use a different technology in laptops? In other words will there be enough space on the screen with this laptop? Any help appreciated! Thanks

not really sure what your friend was saying there. A 19" screen (either widescreen or normal 4:3) is fine for a desktop, obviously with widescreen it won't be as tall as the 4:3 screen. With the laptop - if you want a 19" laptop screen (or indeed anything larger) then you'll need a crane to carry it around!

Hannay,

This is more or less the spec I'm looking for. Did you get any paper work or any code etc... that I could use? Even though the offer is finished I could still try my hand at a bit of negotiating over the phone. Would you mind PM me any details or spec that they gave you so I can see if they will match it now?

Thanks,

Daz

Looking at the dell specs, the difference in weight b/w 640m (2.5 Kg) and 6400 (2.8 Kg) is just only 0.3 Kgs. So, does that make 640m a highly portable laptop compared to 6400. I certainly expect difference in weight to be more, to make one more portable than other.

a replacement machine, and the answer is yes, they emailed me today saying they will be sending me a new machine with a few upgrades, thanks for the tip Mike, highly recommended.

mainly the size difference to be honest, and also a smaller screen = longer battery life

Its suprising how much difference it makes having a 14" lappy to carry round or a 15.4" one. One seems sooooo much smaller than the other.

That's over 10% lighter, what do you want, a sub 2kg laptop?

Those weights are only their base weights anyway, the 6400 has more add-ons which add to the weight where as the 640m does not.

How portable a laptop is, is also based on the battery life. A 640m will last longer than a 6400 on the same battery.

I have a 6400 for the record.

Hi,
The bus speed on the 1.66ghz processor is 667Mhz whereas the 1.73 is 533Mhz. I can't explain it more than that unfortunately, but the faster the bus speed, the better :)

Take a look here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Front_side_bus

No, the 640m doesn't have the ability to add a graphics card.

Does this mean you just won't be able to play the latest games? Or will photoshop, premiere and Media Center be hindered??? Cos I have a 360 you can keep your Windows based games.

Also - Is Quidco like buying something using the Egg Card/ Dixons (MUST USE THIS LINK) setup? For Example to get cashback you have to use the quidco link and then navigate to your basket from there?

Also - What is teh best option to get this with Windows Media Center; Buy the Vista Business option and then downgrade or... Go through XP Professional and then updrade. I spoke to them online and they will not ship it with Media Center!!! Does this even work with Media Center?

Please advise on all, thanks in advance

The boy dun good ;-) Nice spec, you will be pleased with that and you saved yourself about £150 off list too.
The intigrated graphics on this model are reasonable too, I can play far cry on my 640M with not too much eye candy turned off.

Well done.

Thanks. I never play any games on a laptop or my desktop apart from Solitaire lol.

I have Xbox and Wii for that :-)

This dell deal continues to be available for another week

Just ordered over the phone and blagged double memory (2048MB) for 30 quid and changed to Windows Media Center 2005 (For Xbox 360 purposes). Also lastminute.com upgraded to a 9cell battery (that thing better not stick out too far) and the total order came to £556.95.

I believe 2048MB ram costs £129, so I saved a bit... No Quidco tough. :-(
