Sorry forgot to add - When you click the link to the deal. You need to select the Inspiron 1011 as the model. And then it will bring them all up for you!

Sorry I couldn't direct link you to it, their online store is a bit odd to say the least!

a friend just took delivery of his, it's actually go bluetooth installed too. doubt if they all have though..

also these current one's listed are only xp ... win 7 used to be an option too..
#5
Does this model have a DVD/CD drive?

Are these any good? Campared to the NC10 ?

And how much are they normally? (Or best price they've been?)

.

around £229+ i think, they're ok.. not brilliant much the same as the nc10, i think the bench marks show they are a tiny bit faster .. but battery not as good as the nc10...
imho... for the price net books in general have too little ram, slow proc and too low res screen... the markup must be astronomical...

Currently £249 with win 7 but bluetooth and colour lid are at at £50 premium...so if you get one with both...and you actually were intending to buy a colour anyway it's a nice price....you can also load OSX on this one.

I only need / want one for browsing online. My Vostro 1500 is just too bulky to get out on the train, but this hits the spot. Anyone know the battery life? I know you can get netbooks with upto 9 hours life - which is fantastic - but see these ones are only 3 cell.

Can more Ram be added?

Battery life not great from the 3 cell. Got one before Xmas for £180 deliverd with Windows 7. Good little piece of kit for basic browsing etc. I get at best 2 hours browsing from a full charge. You can upgrade ram but is a bit messy by all accounts.
#9
guv
I probably would install Win 7 on it and upgrade the Ram. (Couldnt give a stuff about the colour - though I draw the line straight through "pink"):p

Not sure what to do tbh. I think it'll do what I need it to do and is fine in most aspects ..... but the battery life just doesnt cut it!

The odd one with 6 cell does turn up every now and then...got one due today, and since putting OSX on my mini 9 I'm getting around 3 hours life from a basic battery.
#10
i bought a mini dell and i wasnt impressed by it at all, im not clued up with laptops/netbooks but i thought this was so slow i ended up getting rid of it after 2days and bought an acer netbook which is miles better.
#11
You have to question why they have so many 'refurbs' - not reassuring is it?

probably too slow for some people... as a new machine for 250+ we're getting ripped off, imho best adding another 100 and getting a full spec laptop...
#13
Refurbs? Does that mean they are unreliable?
Why "refurb" if they don't break down?

Dell have an aweful attitude.

Not at all. Most are customer returns or large order from corporate organisations or retailers such as Tesco which have been returned unsold.

Maybe you should take the time to understand what Dell class as a refurb before you continue to spout rubbish.

The word refurbished has a definition in a dictionary. Just because Dell are American does not provide them a right to change the meaning of the word.

But, Dell state: "This is product, which has been returned to Dell for a variety of reasons including cancellation and specification changes. "

Notice the wordings: "including" that does not mean a "refurb" was not a broken or faulty product.

Unsold sealed Tesco stock cannot be refurbished. It is new.
Demo-models could be sent to Dell and refurbished.
Under Dell's T&Cs business orders cannot be cancelled. Distance Selling Regulations do not apply. They only apply to consumer purchases.

I wonder why so many hard drives in Dell machines break down early on.

Some people would think: refurbished => previous problems with machines. There is no need for childish abuse just because you appear to be a Dell fan.

You asked a question and I answered it. You also choose to make an ill-informed post without reading Dell's description of a refurbished product, instead assuming they were unreliable when often this isn't the case - normally they are surplus stock returned from Dell (as I explained).

Of course the word "refurbished" has a definition, Dell have also defined what they consider this to mean. In my experience (I have bought many Outlet laptops and desktops) 99% of the time they are brand new and have never been used.

Anyway, I am pleased you took the time to read what Dell classify as a refurbished product.

Just got one last week, great little machine, only used for surfing, battery good for 3 hours, and it had bluetooth which was a surprise as it wasnt listed as having it. Looked brand new to me when opened.Got my 20 quid refunded for slow delivery too so 175 like todays deal.

Looks like their going fast 10 pages down to 6 now.

I know what Dell refurbished means. It does not mean a machine was not faulty.
You cannot assume they are reliable either.

I have purchased Dell and found them unreliable. Hard disks ofen crash before 1 year. Dell often expect a user to open up a machine even with onsite warranty.
They use expensive non-geographic numbers (of course in USA it's freephone).
It's cheaper to call USA than the non-geographic number.
Manuacturer's hard drives often have a 3-year warranty. Dell OEM have 1 year.
May be it is better to select a smaller hard disk and buy a new one rather than pay the Dell prices for a larger drive.

I often found offerings primitive. In the past they did not even have built in microphones unless a webcam was integrated. Yet, other brands have them as standard for years. If you like Dell, buy Dell. Personally, I have bad experiences with Dell and reliability.

Anyone know if these will play 1080p well if you plug into a HDTV?

They come with VGA output only and can play SD video fine but not HD video.

Scroll through to the ones nearer the end and you can get them with Operating System English Genuine Windows 7 Starter (32 BIT).
#30
I have just bought one of these at the beginning of the week (without free delivery :( ) However I got a 6 cell battery and a 802.11n card so I think i got a bargain for under £200 anyway. Oh and I will be putting OS X on it.
#31
The Dell outlet usually ships good gear. Bought a fair amount there, and thus far, all is akin to being brand new.

The 1011
The unit is nice enough, and it is no worse than other Atom based netbooks taken on face value. The price is excellent.
Two cons.
1. The touchpad on these take some getting used to and are questionable in terms of being good enough.
2. Adding ram or changing the hard disk on these has been made none user friendly. Unlike the excellent Dell mini 9, which was by design modding friendly, Dell made this much trickier. Requires a great level of taking apart. I fitted 2GB of ram and a 320GB drive to my unit, and any netbook is so much better at that spec level. Netbooks are not actually worth having unless at upgraded specs, as they end up being too limited.

If you are handy with taking things apart, then basically this is a good netbook, at a nice price. And netbooks by their nature only offer us value if they are cheap. This fits the bill.

The price means they can be bought cheaply, modded and are fun, exactly the type of place in computing where netbooks aere a great fit.

Have you spoken to Customer Care in USA? America arrogance.
Consumer orders a Vostro.
They want to cancel (before shipping) and quote Direct Selling Regulations.
Dell refuse to cancel or change spec on the basis it is a business machine, so must be a business order and exempt from regulations.
Excuse me, but where on the Dell site does it state "Vostro or other business machines cannot be purchased by a consumer?" No answer.
They wrote 30-days money back guarantee, on their site and the REFUSE to honour it.
Indian sales centre state a person can cancel an order.
They state, if the site states 30-day money back guarantee they will honour it.
But Dell don't.

Not really hilarious, if you actually google for it, other atom netbooks can play it with the right codecs. I'm thinking of it as an alternative to a wdtv

is the 1011 also know as the 10v? because thats the one that works really well with OSX if im correct?
#35
I believe so, if it doesn't work I'll send it back. The chipsets on the outlet store are the same as the 10v on the dell site. I'm almost certain that it will work :)
#36
*** There are now hundreds with Windows 7 starter available on the outlet.
#37
240 now on the outlet with Windows 7...just dropped...240 all the same spec black or white...sounds like a canceled corporate order to me :)

snap!!

Yep they are the same thing and thats exactly what i'm going to do ;)

all the new win7 ones have no bluetooth I think as the WinXPO ones do ('MISC' in the addidional info section of teh description).
I think the win7 are good value as win7 alone (not including dodgy e bay codes) are 60+.
Can you easily dual boot to Apples operating system OSX - or is it difficult ?
