I too am looking for a good deal on a replacement laptop with a good Core i5 spec.
As someone who has also recommended Dell PCs and particualrly the Dell Outlet side, I had recently bought one of the Studio 1558 Core i5, 500Gbyte HD, ATI 545v, 4GBytes RAM, colour upgrade option etc for £379 delivered ( over £700 on the Dell website direct ), however it suffered from a problem with it constantly freezing requiring a hard power off and back on. It would sometimes freeze within seconds of being booted other times an hour or so in. Doing a quick search I found a long list of people complaining of the same problem with Studio 1557/1558/1747/1749, and to a lesser extent with Inspiron 1564 and 1764 models.
I was considering a 15R [N5010]( although they aren't as nice as the Studio range ) but I have now seen reports of these too also freezing.

Dell would not comment on which other models had problems, but simply offered me a full refund.

If anyone has had a recent Dell laptop for a while and has not experienced the random freezing problem I would like to know the model and spec. Not sure I want to go through all the hassle again until I hear positive reports.

As for this post there have been much better deals recently on the Dell Outlet website ( assuming the units actually worked and were not returned again )

Sorry to hear about the problem you suffered, I got a 1747,1558 and a 1564 in the last couple of months and immediately upgraded to the latest bios releases, and so far have had no problems at all, but I have noticed that the really good deals from the outlet have slowed down in the last month or so, maybe QC has improved.

Good deal if ATI card, otherwise less so I think.

So it’s not an i5 and it might have ATI graphics! Lovely.

Some are i5 but doubt if the gfx card is there.

Picked up a 1564 same spec WITH the 1gb ATI and i5 520 for £317 2 weeks ago...these seem very overpriced.

Add 1545 to that model list... I bought a white 1545 a month ago, with 500gb and 4gb ram 2.2ghz core 2 duo it was doing the same as yours, freezing but also coming up with a memory error... on checking the memory one of the dimm sockets was faulty... Dell refused to repair it and only offered me my money back... :( The annoying thing about that was I only paid £309 for the system, and at the time they offered me my money back the cheapest equivalent was £420... oOoO good way of making more money out of a customer!!!

Is it even legal for them to refuse to repair it???
