Had my dell insporon 1520 for over 5 years now and still going strong!
Even the 'bog basic' Inspiron 15 is a well put together machine. Love the bright screen, the brushed effect plastic chassis is much sturdier than similar priced competitors, love the keyboard (dont like the lack of num pad though, I use them a lot).

I do use HP for work as they take alot more of a bashing but ive had no problems from dell laptops for home apart from the odd key fading ere and there if u know what i mean

It sometimes has a mind of its own, particularly when it comes to powering down, the connection to the screen came loose once (I removed the keyboard and fixed it myself) and I had one HD fail (they sent a replacement HD).
Otherwise, it has been a really good robust machine (touch wood & whistle).
