I'm not so sure about 'awesome' price. More like going rate for this model at most places (see here for example). But it's a first gen i5 so it's worth considering the level of grunt if comparing to a modern or more recent machine (especially in the consumer realm) if anyone does consider this machine.

Personally, I'd be on the hunt for one with the backlit keyboard as they are great and while it doesn't really add any value to the machine there are plenty about as these things fill offices up and down the country. There's also plenty of choice, having a look around there's plenty of options that even offer i7 processors with similar other specifications at the same price point in the refurb world.

Does review well and it's 4 years old this model so it's design is at least that (business models tend to be behind the times if style is something you care about).

Cold old tech for the money

Edit: also only 30 day warranty and probably a knackered battery to boot. Better off spending an extra 50 quid on a 3rd gen i3 which would give u peace of mind and similar performance with double the HDD space.

And what do you suggest that's equivalent or comparable for the same sort of money? Say under £250.

You mentioned 250 not me ☺

See my comment above mate. I said for about 50 quid more u can get a 3rd gen i3.

250 is a bit steep for what's on offer especially when factoring in a new battery

30 day warranty is the problem.

Do they need a laptop (running windows, that you can install other applications on) or a Chromebook (there's an app store for additional extras)?

For what you suggest, if they just need ability to do documents, spreadsheets, presentations, email, and internet then a Chromebook is worth considering and within your budget. Note that a Chromebook really needs an internet connection to function, so if the college environment doesn't have wifi then this may something you need to consider.
