Can someone let me know in simple terms what the difference is between one of these and a regular laptop?
My friend is looking for a "Laptop" for her 10 year old daughter.

Its smaller then a normal laptop, and the lower priced model doesn't run windows out of the box, you'd need to install that seperately if you already owned windows.

A man of your talents will be able to install windows. These are awesome, they are great build quality, good camera and perfect for someone to be using office, youtube and websites etc...

The only annoying thing can be the small trackpad, but a wireless bluetooth mouse

How fast are the data transfer rates on the Dell solid state drive?

I've currently got an Aspire One but XP is much too slow due to a poor data rates.

Kinda defeats the purpose of a netbook tho lol

I suspect you may be pushing that little Aspire beyond what its actually designed for...failing that you have some sort of driver issue if it REALLY is that slow..

So if i just wanted a laptop for looking on ebay, youtube, hotdeals (of course) would this be suitable??
Also is it suitable for wireless??
#16
Another great find Mike.
#17
These are great for putting OSX on too
#18
a good deal but the 4gb SSD is a bit too small, i'd take a decent sized hard drive over a tiny SSD anyday

even for basic internet usage you'd still wish you have some space, trust me

The answer is yes. Got one of these for my Daughter before Christmas when they were £99. Its Brilliant. Real compact and lightweight.

Can you install small applications on these laptop. I have a CCTV camera software on my home and work PC, so it enables me to see my cameras from work or on my laptop when connected to the Internet. A small application is required to be install would this Laptop allow this especially when its built on Unix based OS?

Any additional info would be good.
#21
meant to be the best netbook for osx :)
#22
you might struggle to get xp on the 4GB SSD model - and probably need the 16gb to install osx.
#23
Anyone know if there is room for a 1.8 or 2.5" drive in these?

Cheers

Some of the reviews, giggle

Title: extreamly dissapointing Date: 20 February 2009
Pros
All disappointing even there communication no help.
Cons
all of it....

Additional Thoughts
iv had my notebook since 26/1/2009 and had to go out and buy a 17 pound connecting wire and still to this day the wireless internet doesn't work, the bluetooth works badly, and also i wrote an essay on the notebook as a piece of uni work and sent it to my email and it wouldn't work due to the poor file. I have complained many times and got no successful help, i have also asked either for a refund or an exchange and i was told no because i have had it longer then 7 days. A huge waste of money for myself and worser even were in the middle of a recension!

Pros
Excellent. Great for casual surfing and chatting and very handy for traveling. Light, quick to start and good battery life.
Cons
My dog chewed through the power lead which I thought was kind of cute until I discovered it's impossible to buy a spare! Unless they become available in the future my mini 9 is unusable and for this reason only I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else.

Thanks, but what do you mean by "If I already owned windows".

They have a laptop that they got a year or two ago with XP on it.

Thanks, but I am not too sure. If it was for me, I wouldn't mind, but don't want to mess up someone else's computer. Approximately, how much is Windows to purchase?

Thanks for that, pretty vital info.

I agree if you want one of these just to put another operating system on it, go for ideally the 8 or 16 GB versions. If not the 4GB is great for what these are designed surfing and getting emails whilst traveling.
#33
i'm seriously tempted.

anyone know how would bbc iplayer fare on it?
#34
Can XP be installed on these with the small solid state drives ?
#35
Also - whats the difference between the £179 and £189 one ?
#36
I have been quoted 1-2hr battery life by the online chat just now. can anyone who has one confirm please?

If its true I'm sticking with my Aspire One. But if its 3hrs ill take one.

Does anyone know how much these retail at in US stores, I'm heading over to Barbados in 2 weeks and I'm not sure if I should wait and buy one out there.

People going to Barbados should have to pay 500% duty. :)

Only a modified (stripped down or "n-lited") version. :pirate:

You can fit XP on a 4GB drive without nliteing it. It would not leave a lot of space to spare though so you would need an SD card or USB drive for additional storage.

This review

says 3hrs 38mins using it for watching movies etc. should be better than the aspire one as thats only a 3 cell battery and this is a 4 cell

How is that fair?..lol

I'm tempted to get myself one of these and send my Acer one back (having issues)
I would have to go for one of the cool designs though, it would be rude not to
