Genuine Windows Vista™ Business add £35.25
#2
How well do you reckon this would handle vista?
[mod]#3
Not having tried Vista yet I dont really know Mark, but its offered with Genuine Windows Vista™ Business and you need to downgrade to get to Premium which I think is more graphic intense unless you switch that bit off. So again I guess but maybe the reason for offering business is that it will run that ok but Aero may cause it some slowdowns.

But this is one of my favourite Laptops btw and yours!
#4
Yeah - the reason I ask is because I have this laptop, and as it's now being released with vista I'm thinking that in about a year's time (when I have cash to spare & vista bugs ironed out) I may wish to upgrade to vista.

You're weakening markwillis....odds are falling that you'll have vista installed before 2008 dawns!!!

only 1gb ram and 14" screen, ok deal, but there are 15.4", 2gb ram for this price, like the 1 on play.com

yep agree..but this one is designed for portability and if that is your main objective then this fits the bill.

LOL This one is more expensive than the 15" counterparts because it's designed to be small and light.
#9
This is a good deal and at any other time (without the gateway) it would be a great deal. Fo many this might be better than the gateway as it is lighter (as far as I know) and has better battery life (I believe 5 1/2 hours of 6 cell).

extra ram is only weigh an extra 10 grams LOL!!!
[mod]#11
I have had a few ;-) widescreen 15.4" dell laptops and this 14" widescreen one seems so much more portable. I couldnt believe how much more I liked this 640M over the 6400's and 6000's I had before it. Perfect size for me.
#12
Waiting to see how good the deals get for core 2, dedicated graphics 256mb, 2gig ram(or easy 2 gig upgrade) Dell Laptops with Vista. No doubt MikeT will post a deal soon.
#13
What graphics card is it? (onboard I guess but can't see any spec)
#14
onboard, up to 256MB (taken from system RAM) - variable, so it only takes what is required by your applications

I have a widescreen 15.4" Inspiron 6000. Great laptop, but as you say, its not very portable and is really only suitable as a roaming computer within the house.

Just looking for some advice (apologies if this is the incorrect forum)

Got a budget of around £550

Want to do the usual thing...surf the net, watch dvd's, download music, picture editing

Narrowed search down to a dell or acer (5611 or 5612 or 5633)

I've seen the acer in pc world/currys and like the look & feel.

Obviously I can't do this with the dell (6400 probably)

Dont care if its core 2 or core duo as I beleive memory is more important (both have 1024mb).

Battery life could be an issue as its only 2-3 hours on the acer...I think the weight are the same

Any advice on what I should go for?

Thanks

Well if your main priority is mobility you will not go far wrong with the Dell 640M....it's really a case ofhorses for courses when it comes to a laptop as so many purchasers these days just use them as a desktop hence the higher specs and screen size with graphics cards capable of player the latest games.

The bargain so far this year was the Gateway from Play.com but that is now out of stock ..there are mixed messages reagarding further stock but it may be worth checking in the next few days.

If you haven't seen the Gateway specs just key Gateway into the Search at the top of the page.

The new Dell deals will out on Thursday and all the major retailers will be launching Vista loaded laptops in the next few days so may have some opening offers...if you are not convinced about a Dell my advice is to seek a model you like in a local store...then post on here with the model number and I'm sure someone will come up with a good deal.

Mike, Any idea when Dell are likely to annonce the replacement for the Inspiron 6400??
#24
Its worth checking the Dell Outlet offers. I got this identical model, but with upgrades of WSXGA screen, 160 Gb HD and 9 cell battery (total price = £752 using this e-code) for exactly £500 at the w/e. It has Media Centre rather than Vista, but that makes no difference to me.

It has not arrived yet, but it seems to be that the Outlet machines are new models. I got a fantastically speced E521 last week which is obviously brand spanking new. Curiously most of the desktops have a 56k modem and one wonders what market the Outlet machines are made for, as this is never an option when constructing them from new

For some reason I do not get the option to downgrade vista and so the cheapest price is £587.57 :x

Also what are people's thoughts as between this and the XPS M1210 (of a pretty similar spec to the 640M, save with windows xp?

I have been trying to find a "real life" shot of the 640M so I can compare sizes.
[mod]#26
The price has increased as dell have taken away the option to downgrade the Vista flavour (as I predicted) so its business Vista only now.

3 very quick & dirty shots of a 640M I just took if they help?
[mod]#28
Here's a couple more of the 2 laptops together. The 640M has the truelife screen where the D620 has not. Far Cry pictured.

Does the 640m come with truelife as default now?

No Mark, I was refering to my 640M pics, not to the spec of the deal:thumbsup:
#31
Oh. I see. Talking of screens... I have just noticed on my 640m laptop screen a ~1cm black "hairline" mark on my 640m screen. When the screen's off there doesn't appear to be a scratch on the screen, and I can only really see it when there's a white background behind the mark. Does anyone have any idea what this might be? Is it something covered by the 3yr warranty (i.e. is it likely to be on the inside of the screen) or am I just going to have to live with it? Thanks in advance.
[mod]#32
Sounds like a stuck pixel Mark, google and d/load a dead pixel checking prog. Run and see if it shows up or maybe even clears it. Gently massaging the screen can also unstick them, google for that too.
#33
No it's not a dead pixel, it's much thinner than that and it's about 1cm long

Thanks Mike for the shots - they do help but I am still undecided between the 640M and the XPS M1210. I am leaning towards the XPS but am being swayed by the thought of having vista... Thanks again

Hello Mike T, apologies for the slightly tangential relation of this post to the deal but how well do the D620 and 640m play fps games? i'm not remotely a dedicated gamer but the ability to play rts or fps games wouldn't go amiss....although it's more likely to be Football Manager...
The d620 can have quadro gpu can't it(i know, most definitely not a games gpu but a step above integrated)?
thanks
[mod]#38
Sorry for the delay in answering pingusan, real work got in the way for about 9hrs!

The 640M has intigrated graphics and no upgrade path so although it will play some fps games quite well like Far cry for instance with reduced eye candy its not a gaming laptop so buy it for its other features ;-)

The D620 is really a business machine and can be ordered with intigrated Intel graphics or with Nvidia NVS 110M graphics with drivers really designed for aiding cad rendering, having said that the Nvidia does work quite well and produces a marked improvment in fps on games like far cry over the 640M while keeping the 14" widescreen small laptop style.
3Dmark06 score with intel graphics on the D620 is 230 while Nvidia scores 625 with latest drivers.
Neither are gamers scores but you can see the difference the Nvidia makes.
The D620 is a much more pricey machine as it comes with 3yrs nbd warranty as standard and it feels like it would pass many more drop tests than the 640M ;-)

Sorry to bounce, just wanted to say thanks for the response, much appreciated :)

Must admit the 640m would be ideal were it able to upgrade the gpu, sadly a non starter, hey ho.

One last question before i probably hunt out a 6400 deal:
Out of interest, and I think it's probably the most stupid quesetion I've ever asked, but is it possible to retro install the 7400 gpu into the 1210 (invalidates the warranty I know) or are gpus in laptops not swappable like desktops...I know nothing about the insides of a laptop chassis :? :

TIA

Just a quickie for the tecno folk. I have received my (dell Oultet) 640M with which I am delighted. It has one issue and i just want to check whether I am being over-sensitive. When the hard drive (160Gb 5400) is "working" (i.e. is actually active) there is the faintest slighlty tinny 'rattle' (thats not quite the right word but closest I can come). It is quite noticeable although not loud and I just want to check that there is no problem with it.

Oddly, the E521 received last week (also from Dell Outlet) which I am sending back, has the same issue.

Any thoughts gratefully received.
