Voted Hot, CPU alone is £115-125. Put a decent Graphics Card in there and your laughing:thumbsup:

That is a good deal, paid a lot more than that for a dual core with only 1 gig of ram in dec 07. good find!!!!
#3
Good deal but if you want to u/g the gfx card make sure the power requirements are enough.

IIRC, the Inspiron 530 quad core comes with a 350w PSU, should be enough for a 8800GT but any higher and you should do your homework.

Video Card 256MB ATI® Radeon™ HD 3650 graphics card

And a dearer graphics card!

This one is a bit less than that (but still costs more than the Tesco one!), has separate 128Mb graphics card & 500Gb/16Mb cache HD as well as card reader so is a bit better spec.

http://www.dmxdimension.com/recommend/D075020
(delete the monitor)

Comes up in the checkout at £374 delivered

The Tesco one is very hot, although as you can see, for a bit more you can squeeze a better option out of the Dell site & and as ever it depends on what you want & need!

Neither quite beats the Quad core Vostro 400 I bought for my partner a few weeks back, so I am just biding my time waiting for a killer deal before I buy myself one!

I forgot.... you also get Quidco on the Dell site... 3% if I think rightly!

plus the "Video Card 256MB ATI® Radeon™ HD 3650 graphics card"

still looks a good find...blimey...waited too long before hitting the submit button :)

It's not so much the number of resistors, but th number of transistors that is important when it comes to micro processors. Though if there is 151M resistors in a dual core I would presume 302M in a quad core.
#11
nice find. I think there's a £13 voucher kicking around too.
#12
Was just going to mention the £13 voucher myself
It's worked for me

Plus 299 club card points and whatever quidco comes to.
Was the Dell Vostro deals better than this?

ddr2 800?

There's about 300 million transistors on a Core 2 Duo chip- not resistors. This Core 2 Quad has about 600million on it.

Would this be good for games with a decent graphics card? If so whats the best graphics card that would be compatible with the spec and the cheapest place to get it from? Thanks for any help

nearly all games support max of 2 cores so you wont benifit purely for games, video editing etc will improve alot.
For games look for a faster duel core processor like the E8400.

but for this price you gotta ask yourself minus the profit tesco and dell make on this what corners have they cut to get to this price.

more than likely a £10 motherboard that you can't upgrade much on.

Thanks for that, think i'll give this a miss then.

I used to think the slowest quad cores were better than dual as there were 4 processor compared to just the two. Got a bit behind the times on the build front nowadays, what with all the different types of ram, processors etc there is now :?

Quad cores generally are faster than dual core, its just most games don't fully utilise the extra cores. It will still run any games fine as its the graphics card that really determines how the game will run. This particular computer has a very basic graphics card but i'm sure it will take a decent graphics card. I wouldn't say this is the best machine for games but for the price its an excellent deal regardless.

The only downside seems to be the graphics card then.

For a non gamer, would this be an ideal machine. I am looking for something that will be good for web stuff, word processing, database work (endnote/ maxqda). But also good for video editing. Editing uploaded mini dv video on my current pc takes forever. Would this be good for that? Sorry if this is naive, but is a graphics card relevant for that sort of thing, or only really for games?
1 Like #25
graphics card is used for anything displying or playing on the screen so if you do ALLOT of editing with video or speed is an issue put a new GFX card in for like £50 and as from other poeple you'll be laughing
#26
**** graphics card. It really lets the system down.
#27
Also need to check the onboard card can be disabled and replaced with a PCI-Express graphics card. Most motherboards would have at least one slot for a graphics card these days. Also wonder what RAM is in this box, if it's anything less than ddr2 800 it seems a bit of a waste with a 1066MHz FSB CPU.

As a low to medium spec machine, it will be more than adequate - just don't expect it to blast through Crysis, even if you put an 8800GTS 512MB in it.
#28
Mods - worth changing title price to £286? It is with voucher, and definitely works"!!

Agreed, you don't tend to get much by way of resistors on chips unless there's been a big change from when I was working with semiconductors simply because you need a bit of size to get any substantial resistance which is something you don't have with a chip. Now if HP manage to get memresistors sorted then it might be a different story!

Hot deal by the way!

Mike T for someone who doesn't work for Dell you sure are putting up a good argument on why NOT to buy this Dell from Tesco :whistling:

The ability for a computer to handle video editing is not dertermined by the power of the GPU. CPU, hard drive speed and the amount of RAM fitted are the key factors. This will fly through any video editing, HD or SD.

No not at all, its a bargain thats for sure, just dont extend the warranty past the 1yr that dell cover it for. Wait till the year is near up and contact dell for an extension warranty with them directly.

IF I did work for Dell then I would still be pleased you bought one, as Dell still supplied it ;-)

I altered the title line to show the discount coupon price too.

Although I don't think it says anywhere, there's a 99% chance that this'll come with a 300w PSU. Meaning the 8800GT won't work (or will but will then break) on this PC. You could just buy a more powerful PSU for it though?

This is a great price. Hard to resist it but I think I'm gonna get a C2D with a higher clock speed.

The CPU can be overclocked if you know how to...even if you dont there are vids on youtube and plenty of webpages with walkthroughs.

Amazing Deal... buy a new decent PSU with fan for £25-£40 plus purchase a 8800GT for £80 you are literally laughing all the way to the bank. For just over £400 you have a quad core system with a good graphics card which can be used for vid editing, gaming etc.

Does anyone have any experience with retuning a computer from Tesco direct because "you didn't like it" ?

I'm tempted but I want to install Mac OSX on it (http://www.osx86project.org/).

If it runs fine i'll keep it, if not would it be easy to restore back to default and return it ?

Finally how noisy are these things ?

So would this graphics card fit in this PC:

If so would it rock!!
