I was looking for a new laptop for a friend and had been interested in the studio laptops on the dell website with the new i3 or i5 processors.

The standard Studio laptops are £529 on the main dell website, but noticed that the outlet has some on there today starting from £310+VAT which comes to £365 plus there is free delivery until 30th April so £365 for a good spec laptop delivered.

I opted for an i5 processor with the cheapest one being £340+VAT which comes in at £400.

The spec for the cheapest one was as follows, with others having similar specs with small variations:

English Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium (64 BIT)
3072MB (1x1024 + 1x2048) 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
320GB HD 5400
512 MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4570
Scratch and Dent
15.6in High Definition (1366X768) WLED
Intel i3-330M (2.13GHz) Mobile CPU
LCD Back Cover Black Chainlink
Grade 1 Scratch or Dent
Camera Integrated 2.0 Mega Pixel Camera
Dell Wireless 1397 (802.11 b g)
Studio 1558
DVD+ -RW (8X)

Note that there were some at £290+VAT earlier, but I've edited the deal and title as the ones now available start at £310+VAT.

Not all of them, some are orders that were cancelled after the build was begun, others are store returns that were never sold.

What sort of condition are the scratch or dent ones in this is putting me off buying one.

Grade 1 usually means a very minor scratch or two that can hardly be noticed.
Grade 2 means it’s dented or cracked and I wouldn’t recommend buying a grade 2 laptop.

From the last thread on outlet machines, grade 1, hard to tell where/if there's a mark or fault. Grade 2 can have scratches on the casing or imperfections in the colour of the lid.

But remember that you're covered by the distance selling regs, if you don't like it you have 7 days to return it.

I’m seen 3 in the last week but they are rare. This was the cheapest that I’ve seen and the other 2 were about £480 inc but came with a faster CPU; i5-520M 2.4GHz. Today’s model was a bargain I suggest.

Good find mate. It's great value for this. Hot

None now and the one in the OP is classed as scratch and dent anyway, why the hell would you want that?

*some* grade1 defects are almost indiscernible apparently...

There are also inspiron 1564

For £50 more the system below seems better value. The i5 supports Turbo-boost whereas the i3 doesn’t so this can hit 2.53GHz. It also has more RAM and a larger HDD:

English Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium (64 BIT)
500GB Serial ATA (5400RPM)
4096MB (2x2048) 1333MHz DDR3

Unit Price Incl. VAT £ 416.02

Saw that, but also scratch and dent.

Grade 1 though which are very low risk.

They have some more in stock. Just picked up one with i3, 500gb hdd, and 4gb RAM for £353. (grade 1 stratch and dent) Bargain!

Thanks OP

From a quick look I think they might all be gone now, but I checked last friday when there were none, but first thing saturday loads more had appeared so expect more would probably become available on saturday morning again.

The i3 or i5's seem to have gone.
#22

I got an i7 yesterday for under £600 delivered. There are some good deals there if you are patient. I spent about an hour refreshing my searches for it (between 9-10am)

Sure. Not everyone's cup of tea as it was the 17" model and not the best screen. But I need the faster proc for video editing I'm doing and had a budget of £600 so grabbed this when I found it.

- Studio 1747 - - 500GB Serial ATA (7200RPM), 4096MB (2x2048) 1333MHz DDR3, Display 17.3in High Definition+ (1600X900) LED TL - - Intel i7-720QM (1.6GHz) - - Graphics 1 GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 - - 8X DVD+/-RW - - English Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium (64 BIT) - -

looks like you got a deal, i thought all the 1747 werre 17" in screen size, what res were you hopeing for?

You got the deal they are doing on the Dell site which is £949 for £600.

Though aint that processor slow? is the i7 better than a i5 running at 2.26?

Yes, the i7 is better than the i5 for what I'll be using it for. It runs at 2.8, but only when it's needed, so saves power consumption. Has a bigger cache too. Only started looking into this recently though, so my description could probably bet better. some more here

edit: re the 17" screen, my preference was for another model with a 15" or 16" screen with FULL HD. Price was the decider though, and I'm happy enough with what I'm getting (I think!)
