Please rate it on value for money, I know it is expensive but it is value!

I went to buy a Dell today and found that they have changed their studio 17 deals. On the front page they only have Core 2 Duo or Touch versions of the Studio 17 but under the code N0074908 is this laptop:

Intel® Core i7-720QM Mobile Processor (1.6GHz, turbo up to 2.8GHz, 6MB L3 Cache)
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
4096MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x2048]
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 560v
500GB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive
Dell Wireless 1397 Mini Card (802.11 b/g)
Primary 9-cell 85 WHr Lithium Ion battery
2.0 Mega pixel Integrated Web Camera
17.3 High Definition+ (1600x900) LED with TL

I personally added the Bluetooth for £30. I think the reason for the price drop is the graphics have dropped from the ATI HD 5650 to the 560v but for a fast longlife laptop I'm very happy!

Don't forget, any students can get 6% off online and of course quidco/topcashback!

I have been looking at the new Dell Studio 17 for a couple of months now and yes, the deals being offered have just changed.

The previous deals being offered can been seen on the link below...

The one I was most interested in was the third one on list. For £599 you got 3GB of RAM, an i3-330M, a 320 GB HDD and (most importanly for me) an ATI 5650 with 1GB of DDR3. I would have preferred a 1920 x 1080 screen but before this was not previously an option.

This has now changed such that you can get a 500GB HDD (albeit a 5400 rpm one) at no extra cost & you can get a 1920 x 1080 screen as a £80 upgrade. The bummer is that you have to also but a mobile broadband card as a £100 extra to get the deal.

This takes the cost upto £699 with the normal screen or £779 with the Hi-def screen. Unless you need the mobile broadband (and I don't), this isn't such a compelling deal anymore. I think I'm keep my wallet in my pocket a bit longer.

I was looking at this deal too but the 5400rpm and the £100 mobile broadband ruined it! On the phone to Dell the lady said she would ask her supervisor if you can get it without the mobile broadband but didn't call back. Instead of the £100 you can change to a personalised colour scheme for £69 and not need the wireless. I think if you asked realistically i can't see why they couldn't remove the need for the broadband card :)

I did read somewhere that there was a shortage of Intel 32 nm chips (aka the i3/i5/i7 processors). It maybe that Dell are throttling demand with higher priced overage packages until parts become more available. I'm in no hurry so I'll hang on until the good deals come back. In the meantime I'm pleased that Dell now have a 1920 x 1080 screen as an option.

Sombody in Dell must be reading these posts!!! I see the need for the mobile broadband card (at £100 extra) has suddeny disappeared! I could now get my Studio 17 (i3-330M, ATI 5650, 3GB RAM, 500 GB HDD (5400 rpm) and a 1920 x 1080 screen for £699. That's not bad deal! Should I or shouldn't I?????

Remember thats the i3 your about to spend £700. Also if your using it for gaming, your probably going to feel the pinch with only 3gb and the 5400rpm hdd.

The trouble is that you incur a big price jump in the Dell Studio 17 line-up for that extra 1GB or RAM!

It's £679 (not £699) for the i3-330 with 3GB & the hi-def screen and £809 for any machine with 4GB of RAM (the i5-430 works out best value). That's a £130 incremental jump! I could pay £40 for an extra 1 GB of RAM under the options but this, like a lot of Dell's individually specified options, is rubbish value for money.

I can play most games on my current lappy (T6500, 4 GB of RAM, Nvidia 9600M, 320GB/5200rpm HDD). The Intel i3-330 coupled with the ATI 5650 would I reckon give me enough of a performance boost to overcome the lack of 1 GB or RAM.

If you're looking for something in the same price range and for a semi-gaming laptop.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-15-6inch-Notebook-processor-Windows/dp/B001PMLICQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1273588147&sr=8-1

Considerably better spec, the 5650 is capable of at least medium in pretty much all the latest games, very capable card. the i3 wont hold you back, it's more than fast enough for general computing and gaming.

:O you already have a decent laptop lol.

just had one of these with the exact same spec delivered from the dell outlet store for £616

Tigga - is there a link you can add for the rest of us to follow?

no Studio 17's. Think you must have got the last one (lucky you!).

Have to just check the Dell Outlet regularly as items are added and sold all the time. All about the timing.

Plenty of stock and just a case of going for what is there or hanging on for what you want that may never appear or be snapped up quickly by someone else who is looking.

Was about to part with my cash when I reda abut a noisy fan problem on the Studio 17 range. Looks like this has been an ongoing BIOS problem that Dell is doing nothing to fix. The wallet has gone back in the pocket!
