Hi i just wanted to do a quik edit of this post as i have managed to get some add on's.

If you call dell customer services and tell them the E value code then tell them about the 5% discount. Tell them your still not sure they will give you 2 years accidental cover for half price instead of £200 it is around £100. (personally i think this is useful)

1 problem i am finding is this delivery date. If anyone decides to order this can you please post the estimated time of delivery ?? and if this is a long time if they have managed to combat this in any way?

They do ship outside but charge an arm and a leg extra for postage, if I remember correctly £70 or so (had to call their help line to find out, not possible to order online for international delivery). Quite ridiculous given that they ship from Poland or so anyway.

Using the local national dell website is not a great option either, if one wants to have an english keyboard and operating system. Also, the UK Dell deals are much better than here in Belgium for example.

In the end I asked a friend of mine in the UK to order on my behalf and picked it up from her later. One downside: the invoice and therefore warranty was in her name. Well, this was 2 years ago and my Vostro 1000 is still running, only the battery has packed in now.

Wow, that’s a lot of spec for the money. Just ordered two, one for me and one for the cat. The dog is going to be livid as he only has a Netbook. The Post man is going to be in big trouble the week after these arrive. Fido has to let off steam somehow! :w00t:

can you post the direct link please
#11
Wow. What a spec for a laptop!!! :w00t:
#12
I like this price for a great laptop, wish I wasnt such an Alienware deviant else this would be on my radar :)

Nice find!
#13
No Blueray?:-(
#14
looks great but is that graphics card weak? im not to clued up on laptop cards thanks.
#15
HOT!

Spec is a bit off the wall though. A whole terrabyte of storage space a 6GB RAM in a laptop? 1600x900 res 17" Touchscreen? Bye bye battery power :p Sounds more like the spec of a good desktop machine.

Not a deal for me personally, I'd prefer something smaller and I'd rather see a bigger battery and a good 80GB+ SSD in there than the 1TB storage, 6GB RAM and touchscreen.

It's not bad. Enough to comfortably play games like Left4Dead and Team Fortress 2. It'll struggle a bit with more intense games though, say Bad Company 2 and Crysis. I'd say it's more of a secondary gaming machine than a laptop designed for gaming.

agreed - guess they're aiming at the 'using the computer in bed' market here!

Spec looks great though - if I was looking for a 17" laptop this would be it!
#17
awwww my god, So close to being perfect, everything i wanted except the graphics card!, you think if i call dell they might let me put a beefier G card in? as theres no option online :-(
#18
Looks like top specs for a laptop in all areas apart from the graphics card - the 5650 can be configured into Studio 17s for over £100 cheaper than this price but then you do sacrifice performance in other areas. Will Dell be offering a choice of the higher range cards in Studio 15/17s anytime soon, if anyone knows? 57xx? Or are they available only for the Alienwares?
#19
I don't want two 500gb drives unless they can be set can be set up in a RAID configuration, is this possible?

Its a pity you can't configure this to have Bluray. The configuration screen mentions Bluray but the option is not there.
#20
Got to say this is amazing specs for under £800...

CPU - flying
RAM - 6GB
GPU - it's good (not amazing) come on if you wanna play games use a desk top

it's a bloody good all rounder - voted hot hot hot
#21
Bought one last night. Great spec and the touch screen must be worth it. Ok no blue ray, modest graphic card and b/g wireless card, but the hdd, the ram and the processor more than compensate for it and all for less than £800. Can't beat that surely.

PS, for another £10, you get the face recognition log in which must be a gemmick worth having!

I reckon you would use the touchscreen a couple of times then never again. Rather have WLED. Nice price for the whole package tho.
#23
Went for it, but according to my confirmation, I won't see it for another 3 months!
#24
anyone know if you can get the same specs but in a 15.6" screen??
#25
The graphics card and lack of BD drive stopped me buying it as well, when I saw this last night.
#26
Aaah been trolling here and the Dell site for some time now all these deals are confusing me! Don't know what to go for and then this come along! Decisions, decisions!
#27
Such a shame the screen isn't 1920x1080, I would have been very interested if it was.

I won't comment on Dell's current levels of customer service, though........ be prepared to battle with the call centres if you order this and the slightest thing goes wrong. They've currently "stolen" £900 from me for a laptop which they cancelled, because they couldn't provide the spec I originally ordered. This was over two months ago, and I'm still working with my bank to claw the money back. If things go wrong, you are in for a world of pain.
#28
Beautiful looking machine but it's all the money for me and I'd really want Bluray and Windows Ultimate too. These are luxury machines so getting a great deal is worth the time shopping around.

No idea what "High Definition" is supposed to mean because I could say the same about my 10 year old Casio watch. It may do 1080p out via HDMI but so do lots of other laptops. It's hardly a big selling point.

You gotta love that amount of RAM on x64 :p

Yeah, I just had similar experience ordering an XPS16. Gave me 6 week del time. Arrived in 2 weeks. Despite much chasing (and Dell ignoring) they only told me the day before it was being delivered that the 6 week del date was changing. A bit lame, but at least it arrived...

Yep, ditto me with similar deal a few weeks ago. I decided to hell with it and got the XPS 16 with better GPU, and the RGBLED screen. Plus i wanted an i5 rather than an i7, which drinks battery juice for breakfast as far as I can tell from benchmarks etc.

High Definition+ means 1600x900, the qorst res on a 17" screen is 1440x900, so this screen isn't high def or even high def + to be honest!

Never understood laptops like this, 17" is HUGE. And as said before, the battery life cant be that great, and people talking about gaming... who uses a laptop for gaming? Get a desktop! Probs get a much better desktop for the money. Probs get a decent spec desktop AND a nice (albeit not a mindblowing spec) laptop for the same amount of cash.

If it was SSD or something and 15" that'd be awesome.

Also complaining about not 1080p? Its 17" screen, surely 720p is enough? Probably equivalent to 1080p on any large living room TV.

Sure a desktop is cheaper for the same performance. But depending of the size of your home, you might not have the space or don't want to have your living room look like an office.
For me that is the main point of a 17" laptop: You have a good screensize, similar to a desktop but you can hide it away when you don't need it. But clearly not the kind of thing to take outside of your home I agree.
#34
Wow, this deal seemed amazing!

But then I got to the bit where it only lets you choose a 802.11 b/g wireless adapter :(

As the other guy said, it's great if you don't have the room and want the ability to "hide" it. It also gives you the flexibility to take it with you - on holiday, relatives, something to keep the kids happy etc... When I was younger, I had relatives in the North of Scotland where we went on holiday for 1-2 weeks at a time - and when there was awful weather with high wind and lots of rain, a laptop like this would have been ideal to keep us entertained!

720p would not be enough - I think 720p is even too small for 15"

The traditional 17" TFT monitor for a desktop had a resolution of 1280x1024. Then 1440x900 came the norm - so 720p is smaller than either of those. I had a 1440x900 screen on a 15" Dell, loved it - just the right size. So, 1600x900, like the laptop has, is a good resolution in my opinion - it's probably just the right size (1920x1080 would be a bit on the small side).

Just wanted to thank the OP for the pointer to this deal which I ordered early this morning and was given a delivery of 12/3/10. I will believe it when it arrives. The ordinary entry into Dell shows the config I made as over £1900. So with the discount code, with the "reward gateway" 6% I managed to get the config I wanted down to around £800 which I think is great.
#38
Ordered this 2 weeks ago when it was £30 cheaper. Was sent a delivery date was 1-6-2010. I phoned up and asked what was happening I was then told they could not do anything about the delivery time and cancelled the order - 3 months is ridiculous.
Next day it went up to over £1300! I was curious and phoned up and told it would take 10-15 days for delivery if I ordered it then for £1300+! There's something very wrong going on here. Have decided to order a Sony for £1000, no 1TB H/D but it is in stock.

that's just an estimate date. it usually ships much much earlier like a couple weeks max.

lol you flopped.

If only this came with a built in Swiss Army knife, cheese grater and Espresso machine and the screen had an infinite number of pixels and they delivered it 3 nano seconds after you placed the order it would be a fairly warm deal.

Why shouldn’t a 64 bit operating be sold with 6GB of RAM?
