Thanks Mike,
This is an excellent price for a good basic 17" laptop. Nearest on Dell is £469. My friend will be using this as a desktop replacement using MS Office applications, so no need for supersize hard drives or fancy graphics cards, but I want a nice clear screen.
The £12 voucher worked, clubcard points and extra because of having a Tesco platinum Visa card. I went through Quidco and will see if that tracks as well. Excellent deal.
[mod]#3
elditig, did you take note of this
Strange res for the screen is listed as the spec is for WSXGA+ (1680x1050) so you may need to confirm this as it makes it a bargain if its really (1920x1200) which is Dells usual top spec for 17" screen and costs £100+ more!

They may have got it completely wrong and you end up with a base screeen res, so best to check with a store that has stock what the "real" res is.
If its indeed 1920x1200 then its even more of a bargain. Dell dont list WSXGA+ (1680x1050) as being a screen available for the 17", its a 15" res.
#4
Mike,
Yes I read that part.
If it is the 'super' res that would be a bonus, It is to replace a Dell 17" laptop with a 1440 x 900 res that was stolen, so if it equal to that he will be happy.
(in fact I have just seen that 1440 x 900 is the Dell minimum spec for the 17")
Don't knock your own deals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again, keep posting deals, two of my kids will be due laptops soon for college.

would the code XXCLK6 work to get £13 off? Extra pound, every little helps!

Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor 2390 (1.86 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, 1 MB L2 Cache). That's quite a slow processor especially if you use Vista (of course, you could run XP on it since Dell supports it with drivers).

It would be great if you could back that with a link or some benchmarks... AFAIR, memory plays a more important role in Vista performance...

Yeah, i'm on the lookout for a 17"er at the moment. The cpu will have to be at least the T8100 (core2duo 2.1ghz). Only problem with that is the Toshiba P300 comes in at £800 :whistling:

This ones a definate big screen bargain tho

For everyday use like web browsing / word, you simply cannot tell the difference between this and higher end c2d. In fact I dont think any of the current generations of processor are slow, they have mostly reached a level of performance where its acceptable for the majority of users.

There would be little impact on the processor in using Vista over XP, its more of a memory issue and memory is so cheap now.

It would be great if this is that high resolution screen, but I fear it may be a standard WXGA+...

The dual core isn't to be confused with a core 2 duo.

But yeah, for browsing and less demanding apps this lappy would be fine.... Just not for what i need to use it for.

Yeah its great how Intel have decided to confuse people.

Currently theres Celeron M, Pentium Dual Core and Core 2 Duo,

Then theres the Centrino branding and now new Celerons have 2 cores too lol

Might be worth bearing in mind

That one for £68 extra if you're looking for a C2D, 250GB HDD too, tho the lower res screen..

Ordered for £386. Thanks for the post :)

Saw this on Offer of the Day but I wasn't sure how good this deal was until MikeT posted it. xD

There's a review at Notebookreview:

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4471

I'll have a read now and ponder on the purchase later. :P

EDIT: Is the integrated GFX card upgradable or are you stuck with it?

good deal, shame its a Dell

What's the difference between Core 2 Duo and Pentium Dual Core? With Pentium Dual Core would I get 2 X 1.86Ghz?

And has anyone found out if this is the high resolution screen? If not, is it 'ok' for a 17"?

Pretty sure this is the one for me but am just comparing against an ACER deal with Laptops Direct...

Thanks!!
#17
Dual Core is older technology. Core 2 Duo is newer technology that has a higher BUS so get's better performance from the memory (I think).
#18
Torn between this and a recon HP DV 9705ea for 340. Screen being HD would swing it though if anyone is any the wiser.
#19
I would take the Tesco spec with a pinch of salt but you might be lucky to get a Hi Def screen unlike the MacBook Pro i ordered (that arrived damaged too) :(
#20
I m gonna get one if stocks last!!!
#21
Well, despite me slagging off the Pentium Dual Core a bit, I've just ordered one. The ability to pick it up from my local branch and speed of collection have swung it for me. Will report back regarding screen size etc. If it's not as described (for the worst) then I'll hand it back to them under the description of good / services act.

sigh......

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a 2390 for running Vista.

The only difference between the Pentium line and the Core 2 line, in relation to both being Dual Cores, is the manufacturing process, bus speeds and cache.

The Pentium Dual Core line is specifically produced to be sold at a price.

for any technos out there who want to do a check on specs then have a look at the 2390's manufacturing spec (SLA4H) against that of a Core 2 Duo T5300 (SL9WE). These two have same manufacturing process (65nm), same bus (533mhz), same on board techs (EM64, Speedstep and EDB. The 2390 is faster (clock) but the T5300 has more cache.

Sure you can get faster Core 2 mobiles (look at T96xx series) which have fastest clock, 1066 bus, 45nm and 6mb cache. But do you need it.

For everyday use this specification, including the processor, is more than acceptable.

PS - I'm inclined to agree with Mike on the resolution of the screen since it seems you can only config this (from Dell) with WXGA+ WLED (1440x900), WUXGA+ CCFL (1920x1200) and WXGA+ CCFL (1440x900).

Pentium Dual Core was released later than Core 2 Duo but it is not faster despite newer technology. The Pentium Dual Core is limited to a Front Side Bus speed of 800 Mhz whereas Core 2 Duo run at 800, 1066 and 1333 MHz FSB speed. The FSB speed determines the speed in which the processor communicates with the rest of the PC's components via the chipset.

Furthermore, Core 2 Duo have more 2nd level cache. The cache memory allows temporary memory to be stored in anticipation for usage again. Cache memory is faster than standard RAM so the more cache memory there is the faster the processor as more information can be obtained from faster cache memory.

The Pentium Dual Core was not invented by Intel to confuse people. In the IT fraternity, Pentium Dual Core enables Intel to have a dichotomy of processors of different performance levels with the Pentium Dual Core being at the budget end. Moreover, Pentium Dual Core is currently based on 65 nm technology whereas some Core 2 Duos are based on 45 nm technology. This means the components have been shrunk further resulting in more transistors for performance and better energy efficiency (smaller components require less energy to power them).

Yes a Pentium Dual Core allows both cores to run at 1.86 GHz clock speed.

Anybody know why the Tesco photos bear no resemblance to the reviews and Dell's website?
I can't find this product on Dell's website, and the two useless photos on Tesco's site make it look like the Laptop that Noah used.

Anyone received one yet?

Thanks!

You might be right on the product pics. The ones on the Tesco site look suspiciously like an Inspiron 1700 series.

I can't find this product on Dell's website.

If it is a Studio 17 then they are on Dell's website here

Ufortunately the tech specs on the Dell website also mention "1720 Resource CD" which seems to be referring to the Inspiron 1720. There is also anomolies between the Tesco Studio 17 spec and the Dell Studio 17 spec. For example the Tesco one says 5 USB but the Dell says 4 USB.

Would be handy if anyone who has ordered/bought one could confirm.
#31
likewise would love to hear from someone who have received this item please to confirm specs and give rest of us feedback on the product please
#32
just been in touch with support team who have checked this out for me. this is definately studio model. they will get image corrected in due course.
Different spec is probably a special purchase.

Hope this is correct info. Guy seemed to know what he was talking about.
welcome any other feedback if you've recieved one.

Did he confirm the screen resolution was correct?
Thats the clincher for me
#34
So has anyone that ordered got them yet and would be able to confirm the screen resolution?
#35
Didn't ask about screen
think i'll order one anyway. easier enough to return. still seem to be plenty enough in stock.
plus anything you return at tesco you keep the clubcard point !
#36
So the spec on the tesco website is correct and it is a dell studio laptop?
just need confirmation on resolution that a few of us are waiting for.
Also if it is a studio laptop don't we get a choice of colour?
#37
Picking one up tonight. Forgot quidco. B*gger :-(

I think all Tesco models are black (as stated on the website). (Dell charge £30 extra for any other colour).

I'll report back on screen res when I get my hands on it.

You dont get a colour choice, or any other spec choices as these are pre built by Dell for Tesco.
Mostly you should also find there will be no direct match of spec on the Dell website to stop you being able to compare and buy from the cheapest place.

As to the screen res, we will just have to wait for a member to post once they get one.
#39
Screen res is 1440x900

There's also a fingerprint reader, IR and webcam with dual digital mikes.

Also, there's no audio on my machine nomatter what I do. There are 2 headphone sockets, neither produce sound. Volume is set to max on all settings. No sound from speakers. Used Dell Quickset to inspect & download updates. There are several updates for the various bits in the machine, including audio, but that doesn't cure it. The audio is IDT 92HD73C1.

This might have to go back :-(

Maybe you should try right clicking the volume icon on the taskbar, playback devices, then select Speakers/Heaphones and set it as default.

Hope that would help.
