Dell keep their prices in a state of flux, but this particular config and price caught my eye enough to buy one.

Use one of the Dell 5% off vouchers to get this price.

Quidco have an additional 6% off referral until the end of today so possibly even cheaper if it tracks.

this looks like a good spec for the price... why are people voting cold - is it cheaper elsewhere?

just because something is expensive doesn't mean it is not hot though?

on a side note - are dell laptops more unreliable than most... i was looking at the samsung r780 (i5 processor) but this has a slightly better graphics card and double the hard drive space...

is there anything i need to be aware of? anyone got any experience of dell?

On the contrary - Dell tend to have better reliability and customer service than the other big makes. The reason they are so successful is their business model. They make to order and sell direct allowing them to price their products more aggressively whilst keeping complete control of the customer experience.

thanks for the response - is that based on personal experience? ive read some bad reviews online so am obviously apprehensive to part with £600 of my hard earned dosh.

I didnt say it wasnt hot, I was just surmising why its a bit chilly
really cheap budget laptops suit a lot more people than higher end ones, like fords sell more than Ferrari do

I shall vote it hot just to help though!

with regard to dell, most laptops are made in one of two factories Foxconn in china or somewhere in taiwan, that also make apple products, lenovo, etc all in the same building

all machines these days are made of generic parts, dell get a lot of bad press due to selling a very large amount of machines, the percentages are just that way

I would highly recommend dell customer service. warranty is the best thing I love about my laptop. anything happens they'll solve it for you the very next day (at least with XPS line that I'm sure)

In my recent research on price, I have found Dell desktops and Laptops offer much better value for money than most other stuff on offer, yet most deals on here rarely rise above tepid. Maybe these forums are full of fanboys who like only overpriced Sony's and HPs, or maybe the Mactards keep voting cold on anything that is not a mac? Who knows?

There will always be somebody with a bad experience, and they will shout about it louder than anyone will shout about their experience of never having to call customer services. In this respect Dell is probably no better nor any worse than any other large company.

Click the go to deal link, should show as £658.99. Add to basket, add 5% discount code, £626.

Edit: This deal isn't listed on the Dell home page, if that's how you're trying to get to it.

You'll need to search for it by e-value code, which is 202 N0074907.

I do love the Dell warranty and service, best out there. But someone said in another recent listing there have been problems with a new type of Dell processor or something in some new Dells? I'm thinking it was an "i" something (I'm not up on that at all, never heard of it before this last week). I wonder if that's what's in this machine? If anyone knows anything about that, please share as I'll be buying a new Dell sometime this year.

That's the same processors yes but the issues seem to be fixed now.

Dells customer service is S***!

I am assuming those who stated it was good have never tried calling them.
If so they got lucky..

There have been a fair load of topics created on here in misc about Dells poor CS.

The products are decent for the price sometimes which is the only good thing I have to say about them. Delivery is a joke, unless you are a hermit and stay in 24/7 I would not suggest ordering from them.

-----------------

Despite Dell being a POS company I have voted hot on this deal as the specification is fantastic for this price and I highly doubt you can get better elsewhere.

Guess we got lucky several times then, lol. None of the probs we called about were Dell's fault, either. That accidental damage warranty rocks.

I can also say their CS is rubbish...

No you can't - you can say you had a bad experience with them. For all you know, there are 1000 people happy with them for every person like you. I've yet to encounter a company that doesn't get complaints from someone.
#25
Voted cold.

(It's actually a cracking deal, but I'm just miserable and depressed that I'm not allowed one..!!!!!)

Well I don't! And glad they haven't as it keeps the price lower. As for Bluray, I got a ps3 to play that stuff, don't want a BRreader in the laptop.

Well I must have been lucky on the two occasions I needed them for the two Dell laptops I have, a callout (next day fixed no problem) and a replacement dvd drive within two days.

Would have no hesitation buying another.

fabulous deal, heat!

I have this and just steering away from the specs completely because although it is a good laptop, runs smooth and I've not any problems in that regard, the way this hunk of junk is built is just totally unbelievable! I have had problems with the casing and hinges from about 4 months onwards.....the casing around the screen is literally clipped on and comes away very easily, also the hinges come apart to the point of snapping TWICE. The charger has also had to be replaced twice and I had to fight to get it repaired as they say its not covered in the guarantee. Two of the buttons have fallen off also, I just feel that it is very poorly built and I will be lucky to get another year out of this the way its going, not what you want when you're shelling out a lot of money for a laptop.

For the above reasons I'm voting cold I'm afraid!
#33
Dell are well known to have good customer service (at least in comparison to others).

Personally - I have had issues with their CS a couple of times. However, I think that I was possibly unlucky - you are always going to get some people who experience bad CS when the company sell so much product.

Bear in mind as well that people always review bad experiences but not neccessariy good ones!!

It's 100% accurate to say that Foxconn make some Dell and Apple products in Shenzen, seen that with my own eyes. Don't think they make much stuff for the European market there though.

In terms of Dell product reliability then we've 5 Dell PCs in the house, 5150 and 4400 desktops, 6000 and two 1545 laptops. None have broken in any major way, although the hinges on my 6000 are getting a bit tired & floppy after nearly 5 years. I had to replace the 2002 vintage fan on the 4400 about a year ago. I've never had to use their support services at all, other than downloading manuals / drivers etc. from their support web site which I've always found easy to navigate.

Anyone seen any information about the weight and battery life of this beast? Cant seem to see any on Dell.

Thanks

After play had messed me about on a similar specced 15", I ended up placing an order for a laptop of this spec minus the extra HD for about £740 last week. Just cancelled that and ordered this. Scorching deal. Heat added
#37
I've had a Del Studio 17 for a couple of years now and it's a great machine. It's fairly heavy though and I wouldn't like to be lugging it around all day but for my needs (small footprint PC for the living room) it's perfect.

Dell's laptops, for the UK market, used to be put together in the Republic Of Ireland but they shuttered that plant and moved production to Poland a year or 2 ago.

Dell's CS is the usual rubbish Indian call centre where half the battle is making yourself understood but if you have a warranty of any description there's usually no issue getting your problem fixed quickly.

Where I work we have 300+ Dell laptops (mostly Latitude D531 made in Ireland) and given the abuse they take they hold up pretty well.
#38
Heat added.

I'm close to biting my fingers off to stop us from buying one, got my gf one of these for her birthday and it's a lovely piece of kit.
#39
I've bought a few DELL systems. No problems yet.

I think this is a good deal. Heat added.

Im waiting for 13inch i7 laptops from DELL. Do you think they'll have them soon? Waiting for them to find a way to make the i5/i7 chips more stable and less power hungry though as I'd like to have a decent battery life and not too much heat.

Yep, Dell laptops for the EMEA area are assembled in a factory in Poland. The other user is sort of correct as well though - Dell has agreed to sell the factory to Foxconn. So it's more a case that Foxconn assemble the final laptop in Poland (the base/barebones - i.e. case etc.. is all assembled in far east and then shipped to Poland for final assembly, and then to customers).

Dell have supply issues with blu-ray drives, hence why it's not an option.
