There are over 40 of these in the outlet at the moment!

Fantastic price, just wish they had the 1920x1080 screens!! Absolute bargain though.
#3
How did you find what graphics card these have? I can't see it on the link.
#4
I might be being thick, but I can't see where to type in the system identifier number and when I do a search based on the quoted specs it doesn't find anything.

Is this new or a refurb?

edit: I see now it is "scratch and dent" :(

Anyone know what the return policy is on these scratch & dent machines? i.e. if you think the 'dent' is too significant can you return it without being charged a fee etc?
#9
Not sure i want to take the risk as I have read you cant return them easily if you dont like the 'dent or scratch'...

Ditto - although mine was £565! Quidco and I'll get the VAT back also which makes this an absolute steal!! Awaiting delivery date and hope it won't be too long......:)

Can be several hundred, depends on spec. You can't always tell from the site as not everything is listed.

You used to be able to get the service tag from the details screen (which would give you the full spec), but after Dell revamped the site it's not there any more (or no can find it if it is !).

I guess they did that to preserve some of the best specs for non savy customers... Wow! Defo worth considering then. Looking at the Studio XPS 16 models.

But is says "Grade 2" Scratch or Dent what does the grade "2" mean? Also doesn't list the Vid card so buying one without this listed doesn't seem to make sense if you can't return....

Good work! I wanted to get Win 7 Professional and blu-ray as well as 1920x1080, so that bumped the price up a bit. I was also keen to get a "refurb" rather than "scratch or dent" but the only one with the spec I wanted was £670+VAT... so I went for a grade 1 scratch or dent, fingers crossed it's not so bad.

In terms of savings, you are talking hundreds over the retail Studio 17. Compared to other brands, such as the similar spec Sony's, you're looking at £400+. On top of that, Dell no longer offer the Studio 17 new with the 1920x1080 screen, so I'm absolutely delighted.

How do the new processors work? Is th i7 better / quicker than an i5 or i3?

Thanks in advance.

You can return anything under the distance selling regs and they can't argue the point. You have 7 days.

Who ever invented that credit to them - less postage I can live with.

What it like for gaming?
#21
god damn it I've been waiting for these for a couple of months and there they were, but I had a computer full of pages... and locked up :( had seen the spec i wanted too....arrrggghhh..... there was a page of them too :(
#22
OH AND HOW ARE YOU GETTING QUIDCO ON THE OUTLET??
it says No cashback on epp and outlet purchases?

also can anyone tell me how to use epp on the outlet?
as im going through the epp site, but no discount is shown?
all irrelevent unless the top units come back though :(
#23
Are these touchscreen?

Doesn't say on the spec, I'd think not but you might get lucky.
#25
touchscreen is manky screen anyway
#26
wouldn't .think so, but the quick spec boxes are allways a little bit iffy on the outlet..

I've been commandeering my boys lappy for the last two weeks and flicked up the spec I was happy with, but trying to add to basket resulted in a lock-up and it took an age to shutdown :(

It means it is likely cracked or chipped. I wouldn’t buy a Grade 2 laptop but would consider a Grade 2 desktop.
Grade 1 from my experience usually have very trivial marks and sometimes none at all. I’ve seen a Grade 2 laptop and the bottom corner of the lid was shattered allowing you to see the insides of the lid and the hinge was cracked. Not a pretty site and it may well affect the long term reliability of the unit.

is there a backlit keyboard for the 1747 ? please can anyone let me know?

or any discounts at the moment? seems although I went through the epp site there is no epp on outlet :( comes out a tad expensive without a little off LOL...

I don't mind getting a backlit later if there is one ...

It's an optional extra I think.
#30
Thanks agharta.... I think I have seen it on one before, but you know what its like you see sooooo many slightly different specs, and i know some things are oddly uncompatible with others....

I have one in the basket finally, but just want to be 100% cos it aint cheep, but it is a cracking spec....

Typical..... I just pulled the trigger....

More than I wanted to pay, but every time I spec a 1900 screen I end up way over the 1k, so cheaper than that...
Not really cheap enough but I talked myself into it in the end...
Now one of my definates you tell me isn't on hehe...

I should be happy now, but for some reason I'm not

Huge issues with these laptops, I'd advise anyone looking to buy to do a bit of googling, I sent mine back months ago but a bios upgrade may have been released since. At the time there were big throttling issues.
#34
I thought they had fixed that as you say with an update...
I've taken a punt now anyway I 'think' I should be able to get a backlit at a later date but conflicting reports...
I just specc'd a new one and it had the option so I 'think' that means it should be available, but I know they do make small adjustments as the model goes along...

I have sooo much reaserch I shold be doing on a project at the moment, but this just popped up so jumped in...(been looking for a couple of months), but had hoped for the rgb led on the xps, but I NEED the 1920 screen... I had a 9 year old dell 1600x1200 and this one (my sons) is only 1440 and it is VERY noticeably less than my original so hopefully I can now stop bloomin scrolling every damn page.... once you are used to that tiny text anything bigger is awfull.
I was allways speccing over a grand on either this or the xps with the rgb screen...

Just hope the problems arnt still present i guess...

Bios A08 sorted out everything, though I believe you do still need the 130w power supply to stop the throttling. I'm hoping Dell would have a) upgraded all these to the latest bios, and b) shipped them with the 130w power supply. If not, apparently you can phone and they'll send you one for free, not sure if this will apply to outlet though... I will give it a try still :D
#36
There is a sticky on the dell forum regarding contacting them about the power supply so hopefully it's not a problem..

How would Crysis run on this?

My current laptop is a bit rubbish and I wouldn't mind upgrading it at some point soon, ideally to one capable of running games quite well.

Here the info page for the graphics chip http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-4650.13883.0.html

Shows Crysis at 77pfs in low res,38 fps in med and 23 fps in high...

Dell Outlet can be hit or miss, but for most people (including myself) it's a massive hit.

Just last month, I got a Studio 1555 with 4GB RAM, Blu-Ray, 1920x1080 screen, backlit keyboard, 500GB HDD, 2.1GHz processor (sadly not a quad core) for about £450. It was listed as Grade 2 scratch and dent, but having spent ages examining it, I can't see a single solitary blemish - if it had been delivered to me in this condition from the main site, I wouldn't have batted an eyelid.

I have also previously purchased Inspiron, XPS and Vostro laptops from the Outlet and on each occasion have received a tip-top machine for at least £250 less than the price it would have cost on the main site and easily £350 cheaper than similarly-specced laptops from other retailers.

Overall, there's a tiny gamble because you may get a system with a bit of scratching or denting, but you're still covered by the 7-day 'cooling off' period specified by the Distance Selling Regulations (meaning you can return it for a full refund, minus postage).

I got a dell studio a month ago these are sh*t system I am about to return. Think many times before buying.
