Morning all!!

I have been considering getting a fairly decent spec desktop again for a while now, this does seem a good spec to build upon.

However I have no idea how upgradeable Dell desktops are, I have been told you cannot overclock at all which I can live with, but I would like to switch out the Graphics card for something a bit more beefy, and stick in some higher spec ram.

Is the motherboard any good?? Is the Power supply capable of running better gprahic cards??? I dont want spend £400 on a pc which I cant build upon.

As it stands this looks to be a hot deal and I have voted as such.

Thanks in advance.

Well I'm a long time Mac user (from 1985) and sometimes even I need a PC - this looks like a good price for a decent spec PC to me.

Err, ok, don't know where to start. In terms of playing games or other mainstream software, Windows XP is probably the best, and it is what I use.
From what I've been told, macs are good for graphic design and other related needs.
However, people have to realise that these are not the only two operating systems out there. And the alternatives will run (depending on what you do, eg email, surfing, watching movies... god forbid anything useful like programing or the like) your PC much faster than on any Windows or Mac based system. Plus they are mostly free.

Nearly £400 for base unit with a very ordinary processor, graphics card, HHD and amount of RAM??? Am I missing something here?

I love these mis-guided debates on operating systems from people who probably haven't ever used them... Unless you've used Vista for more than 12 hours you can't really comment.

I run all three OS's on one machine, each for different requirements....however Vista is now very well established and I haven't booted into XP for a few months. If you're buying a new Windows PC, Vista is now the way forward. I have no compatability issues with software, hardware and the knowledge bases out there are flowing!

This machine however doesn't seem that great for the price if you want expandability, I recently built an intel quad core Q6600, 4gb ocz reaper x ram, 8800gtx 320mb all with quality branded parts for roughly £400. I used the xfx site for the graphics card, ebuyer for motherboard, psu, cpu, case, dvd drive and pc world price match on the ram.

If you're a system builder, you can get more for your money than this deal.

Voted cold for boring and ordinary, at ordinary prices.

I still prefer XP to Vista, but you're either a) plain wrong or b) on the 'cool to hate vista' bandwagon.

Claiming that Vista is rubbish but XP isn't, is rather like claiming that OS X 10.5 is rubbish, but 10.4 was brilliant. It doesn't make sense, really.

Perhaps you dislike some style decisions, that's a reasonable viewpoint, a lot of people do, including myself. But that's an opinion about the UI, not a statement on the quality of the product.

There's a mountain of solid foundation upon which these things are built, and claiming that one is good and the other bad is like judging a new car on the colour of the paint job.

Yeah, fine, it might influence your decision, and the hot pink is right out - but really - does it invalidate everything under the hood? Honestly?

More misguided fanboy nonsense.
Not a particularly good deal either given the average spec...

Rather misinformed aren't we?

I agree that Vista isn't amazing, needs more tweaking I think.

I have just been using Vista for approximately 6 months and don't think it runs as well as XP. Often hangs and my husband is experiencing the same and they are both decent PCs. This is with the 64bit version, don't know about the 32bit. Some software just doesn't work, but that maybe just a 64bit issue.

I decided to reinstall over the weekend and partition my hard drive and install both XP and Vista so I could use some things on XP. I started by installing XP and thats as far as I got, I'm loving how XP is running at the moment. :)

Will not buy from them again.

Extremely disappointed with Dell's service on a new out of the box Studio machine.

Initially a late arrival and so immediately had to go 120miles away to a UnI. new start for his course. But when fired up for the first time, had a dead screen backlight (so much for factory testing) and when was eventually 'repaired' the was case was very badly scuffed and the top of the screen bezel wasn't re-fitted correctly. (Meanwhile he had to use the old family laptop)

Dell wouldn't listen and inisisted it had to be picked up and returned to the family home (120 miles away) - even if it would have been A LOT easier, not to mention quicker, for then to pick and return directly to the student in Edinburgh.

Not at impressed with their customer care. Null points.

Also, just trying to repair a 18 month old Dell 510 Dimension desktop for a pal - turns out it's a generic problem with the power supply/motherboard/front panel control unit. And on their forums there is 41 pages of complaints from folk with similar problems. See http://snipurl.com/3u2mi

But of course, Dell are not accepting liability - the machines start to fail around the 18 months mark. Suitable for use ???? Don't think so.

Not impressed.

I'm almost certain that this shouldn't be the case. I think at that point, press harder or hang up and call again.

What about people who've genuinely moved house? Does the warranty end at that point? I don't think so.

I'm a graduate of Edinburgh Uni. Nice place to study. Wish your son luck.

No, the Studio desktops are their latest offering, and are dearer, for some reason, probably because they are new? - I can understand why the Studio Hybrid ones are dearer, they are basically laptops in a small desktop case, but these seem nothing special to me either!

I chose to move to Vista & dual booted on PC for a while as many people did.

I'd be happy to lose the dual boot now because its been so long since last time I needed Xp.

Just bought a new laptop & didnt think twice of getting one with Vista.

Things being in another place aint a problem once youve used it for a while - I would probably be frustrated by Xp having things in "another place".

If your gonna buy a bigger / newer (& dare I say better) house you might have to keep your beans in a new cupboard

I wouldn't waste my time arguing the fine points, there are those who will run it down despite never trying it, (and maybe those who are using it as some sort of an excuse for trolling perhaps?), for one simple reason, if you tried if for a couple of weeks, you would not go back, it is simply no problem at all. If you would go back, then you simply cannot see what is blatantly obvious.
As for stability, it is as radically better as XP was compared to Win98! I have had 3 BSOD on two Vista machines over many months, and two of them were while I was trying out a web cam that was 12 years old!

I did the same as you, and test drove Vista for a while in parallel, on my previous machine, so when I bought a new one, I just used it straight away without bothering with XP at all. Wouldn't go back now, and the only time I see XP now is when I work on someone else's machine or use my old laptop, & that is purely as I haven't been bothered to put Vista on it, a matter of laziness only!

I can understand the reason many companies are putting it off, as the COST and time is considerable to change large networks and get everyone up to speed on the changes, but for domestic or very small business use, don't even break into a sweat about it, and let the nay-sayers comfort themselves in their dark & primitive caves, as it is purely fear of change that is the only sensible explanation why you would not want it if it came on a new machine!

Actually the problem is you in this case as you clearly don't have a clue how to use it and most certainly not in any position to be advising others. i have few problems with compatibility and I can access all my folders, it even mimics the old users structure to assist with compatibility.

Anyway, looks a good deal here but anyone know of anything decent upcoming on the Hybrid as I'm fancying this model as my new media serving PC. I've noticed the ones on ebay which are ok but the prices don't seem that great.

John
