Nice find. Top Laptop.

I was about to buy a 8600gt for my desktop and replace my old dell1300 with a new vostro 1000 but now I'm going to have to seriously think about just getting one of these instead.... can I justify spending an extra £300 at the moment.... aaarrrgghhhh - damn you hukd!

This looks like a great spec for a nice price. Hot. How are the speakers on these Dells?

I'm in the market for a high end "entertainment" notebook and I'm seriously considering the HP Pavillion HDX9250EA, as seen here.

I know the two machines can't really be compared, in so many ways, but I'd like to know if anyone thinks there is an alternative to my current top choice?

The three things I need are a great screen, great speakers and a good graphics card. Budget <£2k.

I'd appreciate it if anyone could recommend any others.

TIA,

CJ

I've seen that HP model in the shops, it's quite a beast! Does make you think, why go with a 'laptop' at all if it is that big, just get a desktop? More bang for your buck, but you lose the portability, not that the HP HDX9250EA is very portable anyway!

If you're spending around the £2k mark, what about Alienware laptops? They specialise in high performance machines, geared up for gaming and entertainment.

Cheers Mr. R, I'll have a look.

How does the OS come, on a disk?
When built it says "No resource CD":?
Could I use the version of Vista this comes with on my home PC I am about to build, and put a the Business Edition of Vista I have obtained through work?

Its most likely to come with a disc for windows but it would certainly be locked to dell systems, so you wouldn't be able to use it on other pcs. But you could use the business edition of vista on the laptop.

Fixed Blu Ray Slim Slot-Load Drive, including SW

Need a new laptop for work, considering this DELL with upgraded screen and upgraded battery, budget of £1000, so sneaks under that still.
Couldn't find specs for the BR drive - I assume it can write to DVD-RW? Can it also write to Blu-ray discs, although cannot imagine needing that as no one I know has blu-ray drives ..... yet!

This deal has been on and off for the past 4 weeks. I'm waiting to see if it comes down any further. I'd love to get a similar type of deal on the 17" version. Fat chance!

What they might do with this eventually though is add a bigger hard drive or more RAM for the same price.

CJ,

For speakers try the Bose Companion 3 Series ll Speakers. I bought them cause I play games, listen to music and watch films etc daily, and they are superb !! Comet do them at £199 but dont know anywhere else where they are cheaper? Anyone else know?
[mod]#14
For anyone thinking of the 9 cell battery with this, here's a pic. It jacks the back of the notebook up a bit and according to the review makes the typing angle nicer.

Perhaps i'm being greedy expecting a GeForce Go 8800M and single 2048mb slot memory for this price :) I'm sure I will justify wiping out my credit card when that day eventually arrives.

Yes, but I shouldn't be buying a new laptop just 15 months after buying my last one :whistling:

I got the same spec minus the blueray and with a 120gb 7200rpm hdd for £713 delivered last week.

NEVER pay for the wireless n as I got three separate sales guys to agree to chuck that in for free at dell, its in their bag of tricks for haggling. you can also get the freefall harddrive upgrades for free.
#19
Oh and just to confirm, its a great laptop; im really happy with it. The only problems I've had are with vista which really does suck.

I've been looking at the 17" XPS as well, pity it's not in the deal What makes this offer 'For Today Only'? Is it not part of the January deals that expire tomorrow?

Its been reduced in price for today only, yesterday it cost more and tomorrow it will again as its Thursday (dell update the prices day) tomorrow.

Very nice laptop, good specs and decent price .. but no HDMI output?
Madness considering people will be looking at this for use in a home theatre system.

What makes you say it doesn't have a HDMI output?
According to the manual it does:

Your computer has an S-video TV-out connector and a HDMI connector that enable you to connect the computer to a TV with the help of either a standard S-video cable, a composite video adapter cable, HDMI cable or a component video adapter cable (available from Dell).

Mike, I've seen it at this price several times in January so it's not really for today only. If people want to wait then I'll bet they'll reduce it to £950 again. People just need to keep a note of the e-code and keep trying it. It will be back up to £1300 tomorrow though. It depends on how long for.
[mod]#27
Yes it was reduced 3 times in Jan "for one day only" so I dont quite know how I can be expected to post the deal without saying its "today only"
No doubt it will reduce in price again when dell feel the need to shift a few in a hurry, like all things dell prices go up and down.

Nice deal. Pity I'm not looking for a desktop replacement. If anyone notices any offers on ultraportables please post them up. And why don't Dell make ultraportable's?

anyone know how much this weighs?

I bought a dell vostro 1500 on 21/1/08 and when I used it mozilla was installed over IE,I contacted Dell which i had to phone an 0870 number charged at 10p a minute and CS was in India,Dell said they would refund me for the laptop and collect the one I had but I'm still not happy.

Dell are selling goods new when they are secondhand and not telling the customer which is a breach of the "sales of goods act 1979".
I wanna stop companies like Dell from breaking the law so I have been in touch with my local trading standards who my have them in front o the courts.

You've been warned.

So basically, you returned your machine because Mozilla Firefox was installed instead of Internet Explorer - must say that is very lame. You could of equally uninstalled Firefox yourself and installed Internet Explorer, its not rocket science.

As for Dell selling second hand goods instead of brand new ones, I doubt this very much. Dell is a big company, making millions. I doubt that they would be doing this, knowing that a lot of people buy their products (schools, home users, businesses). In your case, you probably used the Dell Outlet website whereby they sell refurbished machines etc.

This is interesting.
When you switched it on did you have to agree to the end user licence? and did you then go through the windows set up screens? or was the operating system fully installed when you switched on?

I had to go through some agreement when i first switched the lappy on but the operating system was fully installed with firefox installed over IE

Scotty, think before you open your mouth because theres more to my story than i wrote, ppl like you give other ppl bad names by spreading wrong rumors.

You could always give the full details next time. Then ppl wouldn't think that you send laptops back just because mozilla is installed over IE, which seems to be a something Dell is known to do-even if you weren't aware of this.

Dell have Dell Outlet for second hand goods.
[mod]#38
As far back as Dec 05 Dell were putting Firefox browser bundle on some UK sales kit.

It would have been a long post to have written full details but i would have been better of putting full details down other than replying to you ppl moaning over a trivil think all the time.
Common sense would tell me that this laptop was bought as new otherwise why would i mention "Dell are selling secondhand goods as new".
So Firefox shouldn't be on a new laptop, common sense again tells me "some1 has had this laptop before me"
If i bought this laptop from Dell Outlet i wouldn't have complained or wasted any1's time.

All it takes is a little common sense.
