This looks like a fantastic deal. It's even got a 3 year warranty. I had a laptop with this AMD chip which set the fan off alot, so that'd be my only concern - that it might be noisy. Anyone know anything about this?

I've played with two of the Vostro 1000 laptops, both with AMD chips obviously. They are definitely silent under normal circumstances; don't heat up a lot.

Anyone think it's worth taking 2 year warranty and the true life screen instead of the 3 year warranty? It makes it £327 then but not sure if the screen is that much better?

I have an inspiron 1501 which is a heavy poorly built brick in my opinion, is this any better?

Also is the warranty 2 years plus the 1 year standard making it 3 years in total and the 3 years plus 1 year standard making 4 years total or is the 2 and 3 years warranty inclusive of the 1st year? :?

Cheers

Simon.

Truelife is shinier - I think most people would rather have a Truelife screen as it makes things brighter and thus more impressive to look at. The screen is the part of the laptop you'll be using the most, so for an extra £17 or so I'd go for it myself.

Pretty sure the 2 year warranty includes the standard 1 year warranty. Maybe someone else has more expertise, but in general warranty upgrades include the first year.

Cheers, gone for it with the 2 yr warranty and true life screen for £327 plus about 13 quid quidco so not a bad deal really. Its for my wife and she wanted xp and not vista. I don't blame her either as I have vista home basic on this with 2 gig of ram but still gone back to xp pro as it runs much better.

As we all know this machine will certainly run faster with XP so if you can get hold of an XP disc I'd burn recovery discs and install XP. I've also recommended my friend buy this but I think she'll like the look of Vista more than XP and as she won't be using it for much (word processing & internet mostly) I think it'll be fine. She went for the Truelife screen too :) Hope your wife ends up happy with hers! Amazing price considering it's an onsite warranty and a 64-bit chip in there :thumbsup:

Sorry when I said she wanted xp, we chose it instead of vista as she is not impressed with vista at all. I got this inspiron with it on and its been reinstalled 3 times before I went back to xp as it keeps getting corrupt and it's still so buggy. I will stick to xp for some time to come though I do fancy an ibook. I am glad xp was a free option on the vostro.

When you activate Aero on Basic is it non-reversible and if so, would it void the warranty?

Also, a laptop of this spec should be well capable of running Aero, right? (i only use pc for non-intensive stuff like spreadsheets, browsing, playing music and p2p)

I cannot fathom this. You must either be used to uber quick quad-cores, swamped with spyware/viruses or a liar :p

I was wondering which deal would be better, this one or the , Dell Vostro 1500 Notebook. 1.4Ghz C2D, 2gig, 160Gb, carrycase, 6 cell, £327 delivered that is being discussed??

What would be the superior machine??

Which has the faster processor??

Thanks for any help!

I've just thought xp could be slow on your laptop because xp isn't 64 bit and so doesn't utilise the second core? i don't have much of a clue what i'm talking about to be honest :oops:

XP Home supports dual core... http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=63251, more specifically for AMD, see http://www.amd.com/us-en/Weblets/0,,7832_8366_7595~95364,00.html. Your laptop is certainly slow because of the cr*p sh*t that gets preloaded. Try a clean install using the DVD provided to you by Dell

This piece of freeware might be of use for those who want a clean-up their Windows installation:

I haven't used it myself but have used other programs from the page it's from. All have been spyware and adware free so far. Oh, and most of them work pretty well too ;)

Is the Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL58 [add £5.88] upgrade worth doing?

I did it; its superior-ness definately outweighs the price gap.

I opted for:

Upgrade to TL58;
1 Year Warranty;
Upgrade to True Life Screen;
Upgrade to 160gb HDD,
Upgrade to 9 Cell Battery

Came to £339.xx

Pretty good going :thumbsup:

Anyone actually received theirs yet? Mine still says in pre production and will be delivered on or before feb 14th.
#26
Mine keeps flipping between pre-production and production with a delivery date of 18-FEB.

Very poor service to be honest. Thinking of canceling it and getting one elsewhere soon.

This is the 3rd computer I have ordered from Dell in the last 6 months. I had some hassle with the first laptop but when I complained that they had missed the delivery date they arrange delivery very quickly.

Second time it was a desktop and it was fine, but this seems very strange. I would call them but 18-FEB is still a while away yet.

I have also had a few dells before but never waited so long for delivery. My wife really needs it asap and it has already been 11 days since ordering and I am sure they will have taken the money already. It will be 21 days by the time the 14th comes too.

I emailed them asking why it takes so long but that was 28 hours ago and still no reply, maybe I will get a reply in 21 days if I am lucky!

Got mine today, 2 days before expected delivery :-)

Wish I got the 1500, these are a bit chunky
