Many thanks for any assistance

The Celeron 540/550s are actually rather good, much better than Celerons used to be :whistling:

Great deal, Mike. Still hanging out for a decent spec in the £300-£500 range though, probably a Studio or Vostro 1510, before I go to uni.

Heat added!

Does the DVD drive included support DVD-writing (burning DVDs)? or do we have to go for the extra option?
#15

That is one cheap laptop :)

I dont need one, but I guess for people doing a bit of internet surfing etc then this is a good deal.

Also if you wanna jazz up the design you can buy a skin for it, I ordered one for my girl/f's laptop and it looks great

http://dell.skinit.com/ There was some good discount codes around the time I ordered :)

What is the build quality on the Vostros?

I'm thinking about purchasing one with a 13.1" screen and I was wondering if it was very cheap and plasticky.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but will the £216 one play DVDs but not write them? Or will it just play and write CDs? Thanks.
#27
this plays dvds and will write cds only.
You can add a dvdrw which will do both.

Yep, play but not write, you can add DVD RW for £11.75 though.

Great, thanks - that's what I was hoping.

Can anyone who has a Vostro already please answer this question:

It would be much appreciated!

You can find some idea here

Case
The Vostro 1000 surprised us right after opening the box. We supposed it looks similar to the Vostro 1500 with the same screen size, which means like a modified Inspiron 1520. However, it turned out that the Vostro 1000 looks like an Inspiron 1501 in black. It is one of the 'low-end' notebooks in Dell's product range.

The dark color is unostentatious. The top case is more or less smooth, whereas the back panel seems rather matte.

The Vostro 1000 looks not very attractive, on the contrary, it appears to be heavy. This notebook actually weighs a lot, so, this impression proves to be true. Actually, it even weighs too much for a proper mobile computer, so, it's rather desk-bound.

The base unit of Vostro 1000 is made of plastic, but, in contrast to other Vostros without any use of magnesium alloy. Typical Dell, it is nevertheless perfectly solid. We didn't notice any weaknesses.

The display cover is made of plastic as well. It doesn't yield. However, it wobbles, if closed. Most new Dell models have this weakness in common. The transport hook is black and not silver, so, it fits nicely to the case.

The hinges are sizable and efficient, but, if one moves this notebook while open, the display wobbles a bit.

Typical Dell most of the interfaces are located at the back side. Furthermore, there aren't many provided.

Which website did you get that from? I'd quite like to read what they have to say about the 1330 version.

m1330 Review

travisbickle:

I have the XPS M1330. It's a pretty solid notebook. Does not feel cheap at all. I heard bad things about the construction quality but mine is good. The only thing i could mention is that the plastic bezel around the screen pops on the left handside when I squeeze it, hardly a problem!

It works great with ubuntu and the 6-cell battery provides a decent amount of life (3-4 hrs perhaps, with wifi and bt). The glossy screen is good and bad. I thought I prefered it but having started to use a 20inch matt external i'm not so sure anymore. It is good however for ensuring some degree of privacy when in public.

There have been romours of problems with the nvidia chips, and dell are releasing a bios to correct this (possibly underclock), but mine has the intel onboard which is perfectly adequate. I even managed to get hl2 running.

Thanks for this one, needed a cheap, basic laptop for a rep at my company. Now if only it didn't add £70 to get XP Pro on there :(
#37
Anyone know if you can get a refund if you don't want vista? I would prefer Linux on this machine.

You could upgrade to vista business then downgrade to xp pro but you would only save about £12.

Thanks Mike. Ordered one as good price for a second laptop to take to work or use when the kids have confiscated the other one.:p
