Is there any way to check how many hd bays these things have? I've seen some laptops saying they come with 2x120 or 2x160 or 2x250GB disks and having had nothing ever to do with laptops I don't know if "2 bays" is the standard or is merely an extra that comes with certain designs or boards or whatever.
#5
Which is the best deal, this dell or the Acer 5720 1a2g08mi at £359 at Asda that was posted the other day? Sorry no direct link to Acer, i'm browsing on the Wii and can't copy and paste link.
Many thanks.

If they have 2 hd bays it will be configurable in the spec pages, this one doesnt have that facility though.
#7
shame they put such **** graphics on them.

Hi guys,

What am I doing wrong!
If I follow your link (and take it to checkout) I'll get the Vostro 1000 for £353 indeed, but not with the truelife, 160 Gb HD and 6 cell battery option.
If I fill in these options I get £405.

Any help is welcome...

Did you take ALL the options mentioned in the first post? Mouse ?
Try again and be careful to take exactly the same options or more costly ones and go all the way to the checkout page.

I'm the wrong person to ask really...mr dell!
The Acer cpu is maybe better I think but the hard drive is small compared, I have never owned an Acer so thats really as far as I can go.
I know dells after sales service is good, I have no idea of Acers.

cheers mike, which way to go?
#15
Newer dell laptop models and cpu's coming soon. Good price though. Also AMD TK57 not as great on battery life as core 2 duo, so upgrade to atleast a 6 cell or 9 cell(if you don't mind the 3cm stick out the back)

Always something new coming :)

Coming up as £405 for me too (when you upgrade the spec it says in this deal, the base spec comes up as £352)..
Was probably an error which they have now fixed.

Well, the acer one has better (Just slightly) CPU and GPU than the dell, but the 80GB HDD might be a bit small. If you find yourself running out of space, it's easy enough to upgrade it or buy an external drive. You also get Vista Home Premium with the Acers where you only get XP Home or Vista Home (NOT Premium) with Dells, though you can pay extra for XP Pro or Vista Home Premium. One more thing Acer one has a double layer DVD-RW drive whereas Dell has a normal DVD-RW.

Normally I'd rather get a Dell laptop, but in this case the Acer is definitely the better deal.
#19
A good variation if you want Vista Home Premium is:-
Leave the hard drive at 120GB but upgrade to : -
9 cell Lithium-Ion Battery (85 Whr)
15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display with TrueLife™

Comes in at £357.20 delivered

#21

you have to go right through to the checkout, where a discount of £60 is applied for free shipping.
#22

Please guys dont keep saying it doesnt work and the deals changed as every time you post that I have to stop what I am doing and go check yet again that the deal is still working.

This deal is still ok as long as you follow the instruction in the OP and add the items to the spec AND take the deal to checkout.

That's exactly what I did roscoe !
The 9 cell battery life is good for +4 hours compared to just 2 hours on the Acer. Plus the truelife screen on the Dell looks fantastic too compared to the normal Acer one. There is little difference in the processing power of the two machines (the Acer just wins this battle however)

Select the listed spec, including the wireless mouse.
When you add to the basket a discount of £51.06 + 17.5% = £60.00 is subracted leaving the sum of £351.33.

Mike is spot on with this..as are his instructions....this deal is from the business site where it is a requirement to have a pre VAT price of £299 before the shipping discount is removed.

By sending you through the home site Mike is trying to make sure you retain your distance selling rights (something you may lose by buying via business)
HOWEVER prices on the home site have VAT and shipping included in the small price accruing box to the right of the screen and any discounts will ONLY EVER SHOW after the 'add to basket ' stage when you can see the checkout page.
This deal is not a Dell error it is a Dell offer of fee shipping for pre VAT prices of over £299. Mike (and others) are showing you the best bang for buck configuration that you can achive by taking advantage of this offer....so you must add all the items listed to reach the £299 price.

In a nutshell ignore the accruing box until you get to the checkout page:thumbsup:

blimey, youre right.. thanks... mouse must be bringing it over 299.. cheers...

would a 9 cell battery really stick out the back? only £11 more and you could leave the mouse altogether
#30
my question about the battery answered already.. apologies.. need to refresh more lol
#31
Just ordered one... £351.33........ :-D

Make sure you take it all the way to checkout and it will deduct £60 delivery.........

Thanks for the info............:-D

On the Vostro 1500, Dell state "Battery will protrude slightly from notebook,Click “Help me Choose”for more information.

Is this correct? Also 1500 comes with free upgrade to 9-cell battery.

I think you will find the 9 cell battery sticks out the back on the 1500 and 1700 Vostro's
