I've been waiting for Dell to offer the new Penryn processors in their laptops for a while now. This seems to be the best priced C2D 2.5 Ghz laptop weighing 2.5 kg or less with a decent graphics card and the biggest hard currently available that I could find. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
You could upgrade to a 2.6 Ghz processor for £100+VAT more. 3 year basic warranty may also be worthwhile at around £100+vat. Didn't opt for the bigger battery for £10 in order to keep the weight down.

Pretty good. But personally I'd keep the processor at 2.40 GHz and upgrade the screen to 1440 x 900 - So you get decent screen, excellent processor, 3GB Ram, decent graphics all for £568! If you choose to build your own to this specification going from the dell homepage it comes out at £1008! Bargain.

Good find, if only people understood what they were voting on...Hot from me.

Not a very good base laptop IMO and the Penryn CPUs are really cheap anyway; Scan have the T8300 2.4GHz for £153 and the T8100 2.1GHz for £128.
I’d rather buy a cheap Vostro and upgrade it myself and save money. Admittedly this isn’t as straightforward as upgrading a desktop but it’s not difficult as Dell give you all the information on their website.

Good idea, so do all Vostro 1400's have the same motherboard and what's the fastest processor you can upgrade to? Is it just a case of updating to the latest BIOS? Here is the service manual on upgrading the processor:
