You know the old saying 'you only get what you pay for'. when I rang Dell earlier in the week, Dell rated Latitude d630 as being more robust and a better laptop.

Comparable Latitude is £150 more................or are they trying to simply extract more cash out of me.

Are Vostro and Latitude comparable quality or is Vostro inferior?

I have several Inspiron (for home use) notebooks here and 1 Latitude D620 (business class machine) and although I havnt managed to drop test any of them, my kids have with the Inspirons and they survived, I would say the Latitude doees feel a bit more like a tank than the Inspirons.
The Vostro range was built for small business users and if its not up to the job then Dell are lying to their customers, but I'm sure its ok just the sales guy has more leeway to offer discounts (read make more profit) on the Latitude due to the Vostro's being sold at near cost.

Vostro is a business laptop just like the Latitiude line of laptops. Despite this Vostro 1400 is EXACTLY the same as the Inspiron 1420 which is not a business laptop.

But the Vostro 1400 does have business type extras such as a sealed keyboard which protects from dust and spills, the material used is a magnesium alloy which is metal and is more robust than the normal plastic used. The Lattitude does probably have more features, just compare the spec of each laptop on the dell site to see if the extra £150 is worth it.

Just a note I purchased a Dell Vostro 1400 for my sister and it didn't work after just a few days of using. The screen turns pink and the system shuts off. Also, it shuts off and cannot be turned by on again...needs about 10 tries to eventually get it back on.

Contacted the customer service and had someone to check on it. He replaced the whole motherboard and so far its working. But now the sound does not work. And needs more time to fix the problem.

So from this experience with Dell, it is quite disappointing.

Ask for a NEW replacement not a refurbished replacement. Your problem seems isolated as its not common for this to happen to brand new electronics.

Dell have found their error on the 17" laptop and removed it today so if you were thinking of buying this one I would suggest sooner rather than later as they will no doubt get around to correcting the mistake in this too soon.
Its effectively a £34 discount you shouldnt have as the 7200rpm drive is usually at least that much extra to select.

Do you have any idea if they will cancel orders for those who did choose the 7200rpm drives?
[mod]#15
I wouldnt think so unless of course they run out of drives!
