The membership got spoiled around 3 weeks ago when dell cut the desktop delivery in error and since then the lower price ones dont look such good value.
#5
Thanks for this, gonna get me one now. I know nothing about Pc's, but comparing this to others on the web, it looks top.
#6
Got this £25 cheaper two weeks ago. That deal also had a free upgrade to the 9-cell battery!

Thanks for the reply mate.

If you choose Primary 9-cell Lithium-Ion Battery price comes up as £316.08. With Primary 6-cell Lithium-Ion Battery price is £304.33, for this I just downgraded the service option to 1 year but everything is as default.

Hoping someone could help me, im looking for a laptop that:

Is quiet
Looks alright
Lightning fast - for opening folders/files/browsing the internet and simple programs like Itunes and word etc, not for games.
Good for Movies - ill most likely buy new speakers so sound isnt a problem.

Do Dell pack alot of **** on their machines on start up? and if so is it simply removed?
Im a bit worried about the hard drive speed (5400rpm) is that noticeably slow?
I've heard Vista is alot more spec intensive that XP, would this be able to handle it? Im not really interested in staying with XP.

THANKS alot to anyone that answers this!

When I click on the ''go to deal'' link it redirects me to the generic Dell frontpage, am I doing something wrong?

Nope, it is going to be generic page.

Use the ecode in the Original Post, and enter it onto Dells site by using the Ecode Link on the left hand side.

Well, from reading the reviews of this laptop IMHO it's not far off what you're looking for. I'd say it looks alright and solidly built, but it's no beauty queen like an XPS. Dell do put a lot of **** on their new PCs just like other big manufacturers do and it takes a while to get it all off; I know some who do an entire o/s reinstall. 5400 drive speed should be ok as long as you are not intensive gaming. Screen is a decent size and widescreen for movies and most laptops need external speakers for really good sound. This lappy has Vista Home basic, which runs a bit quicker as it doesn't have the fancy Aero features that the premium version has. I'm also hoping that Vista service pack 1 will bring some performance improvements *fingers crossed*

Just ordered this but upgraded the LCD screen to a 1440 x 900 True Life (left the hard drive as 120GB).

works out at £339.34 delivered using the 5% discount code which expires today.

The screen is a much more worthwhile upgrade than the HD in my opinion.

n.b. to get this price you still need to upgrade the battery to 9 cell.

i got Vista Home Basic on my laptop and it is rubbish.
XP is a lot better

Can't seem to get thisdeal, its coming up as 399. Has it expired?

I took the basic deal, removed the warranty, added the battery and hard drive upgrades. Comes out at 399.57. What did I miss?

if i activated vista aero, would the hardware be able to handle it and would this void the warranty?

Just tried at 6;20pm (via Quidco which said 5%) and it is ONLY at the last stage when you actually ADD TO BASKET that the right-margin indicated price suddenly falls from c£400 to the deal ballpark £330 in the basket itself!

So don't despair with the flawed pricing software on their site!

Personally I'd want Vista Premium included for it to be a real bargain tho so gave up once found price DID fall.

It should do fine, but I would not bother. You will get bored of it very quickly.

Sadly Microsoft features do not hold as much as Apple ones.

Rodger that! They pack a heap of carp on it, its best to format and re-install Windows. The system, then, runs like a beast.

Not a significant amount of difference with the RPM speed.

If your going for Vista, I would suggest getting a lot of RAM. Personally, I haven't tried Vista and probably won't until SP1 comes out. I know a lot of people who have Vista, majority didn't like it thus went back to XP... some liked it and stayed... its really up to you.

Are these Vostros light enough to be considered portable? Or am I better looking at the older Inspiron 6400?
#25
Thanks all, it takes off the £60 delivery charge right at the end.

This is coming up 12 quid cheaper at 327.83 now as its not saying that choosing the 6 cell battery delays the order :)

Cracking price for a laptop of this spec..
#27
in the need to replace my aging acer aspire lappy, but as with everything these days there seems to be some many decent deals going around, price isnt always a good indication, but i want to get as much as i can for my money, i like to download and browse the web, decent hard drive etc. no games.

so my question is.... is there a cheaper alternative to this laptop bearing in mind what i use the laptop for?

thanks

Depends on the person really, it's well built with more magnesium alloy than your average laptop as it's aimed at the business sector where it's expected to be tough enough to stand up to a fair amount of abuse. This does make it a touch on the heavy side, but it's not too heavy for me to lug around, though I'm used to Thinkpads which can also be fairly weighty beasts. If it was the 17" screen version I would be more worried about dragging one round the UK, though I've never tried it so can't be sure :)

I was wondering whether the CPU is upgradable in this model? I can't afford to pay for the upgrade from the default 1.4GHz at time of purchase, but would like to install a faster CPU in the future if required. Is this possible?

Its in a zif socket and Dell just released a new bios version to cope with newer cpu's so I see no reason other than maybe loosing the warranty if you do it in the first year.
Looks like there is support for even the T9500 2.6 GHz now.
See the manual for details on how to change the cpu.

Many thanks, MikeT. I am almost certainly going to upgrade to this machine regardless. The memory and system busses are all faster than in my current machine and the core 2 duo processor should be at least roughly comparable with the 3.2GHz Pentium 4 M. I'll be opting for one of the graphics upgrades to make the [older] games I play slightly smoother than my current Ati Mobility 9700.
