These 2 were the only changes I found before 6am today, I will look again later to see if any others are price dropped, but this week isnt the update week, its next Thursday for the site update so these are just interim changes.

Dell have realised that the delays are costing them cancelled orders and for the Home site at least have produced a lead time chart.

Dell are suggesting on their business pages that the Vostro 1000 and 1500 are good for "Quick delivery"
I would suggest that means 1 week from order, but thats just a guess based on Dells usual delevery times.

Don't forget Quidco are also giving an extra £10 for any order over £250. See Quidco site for more details.

thanks Mike.. I will keep an eye out. I started off with plans on the 6400, then the vostro 1400, then the 1500. and now my eyes are bigger than my belly and I want the 1700....!

Im so glad I bought mine when I did.

Just put in the equivelent spec now and it came to £827... i only paid £635 how chuffed am I now lol

I got the c2d 2Ghz, 2GB RAM, 1440x900 Screen, 160GB HD, 8600M GT Card, Bluetooth.

Does anyone know if the grain issue has been sorted on the newer 1440x900 screens and if they've resolved the noise/interferance on the headphone jack?
#8
On my desktop system, I view in 1280x1024 resolution. I'd not want to go smaller than this, so would a 1440x900 be the screen resolution that I require ideally on a widescreen?

Hi guys, I ordered my laptop about 2 days ago, do you know if I could still use Quidco to get the cashback? I'm not too sure how to use it and when I asked the guy I was odering from he said he's never heard of it?
Thanks

No you can't - you have to click through to Dell from the Quidco site when you place the order for cashback to work. Quidco only works for online orders only as well.

MikeT would you recommend this one over your favourite Inspiron 6400 (which seems to have the better spec)? BTW - thanks:thumbsup: for all your hard work!

Pretty much although what size is your desktop monitor? If it's 17 inch, the 15.4 inch at 1440x900 will have the pixels packed in a bit tighter to the smaller physical panel. I like my high resolution panels but just something you should bw aware of.

Well as this seems to be available and the 6400 is on 4+ weeks lead time I would have to say this is a better bet in that respect alone, this also has the bonus of 128meg graphics where the 6400 is plain jane since dell pulled all the graphics upgrades for it.
It seems to have all the right in/outputs and a £10 bonus Quidco discount.

I would prob get carried away if I were ordering as the Camera is £23 extra, the Trulife screen £11 extra and best of all which everyone just about will regret not having gone for is the graphics upgrade to 256MB nVidia GeForce 8600M GT add £47.

Any idea if this laptop has a serial port? cant find it in the spec and I need one

Have to agree, I went mad when ordering mine :) Camera is great, had hours of fun with it and the software that comes with it, also wished I'd went for the 7,200RPM drive aswell as it is noticable when playing games.

Could anyone tell me whether this is worth getting? Note I could get it for £360 due to staff discount.

# Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor T2080
# 1.73GHz, 533MHz FSB, 1MB Cache
# Genuine Windows Vista (R) Home Premium
# 2GB Memory
# 100GB Hard Drive
# DVD ReWriter
# 15.4" Widescreen Display
# 128MB Shared UMA Graphics
# Wireless Enabled
# 2.7kg Weight

And when are the next deals on desktops likely to arrive?

Nice price and XP Pro option as well.

The Dell deals look good, and I'm desperate for a new laptop but I've been having a bit of trouble finding a review of one of these Vostros. Can anyone who's used one tell me what the keyboard is like? I do a lot of typing (I'm a freelance writer) and I tend to work from the kitchen / front room / cafe / train as appropriate, so a decent keyboard is a must!
#20
oh, and sorry about the ignorance: XP Pro or Vista Business (I believe Vista is still a bit wobbly on its feet, and the Business versions is essentially Home Basic plus a few virtually useless features?)

So which one please? I have to order a laptop today - I have been waiting a long time now since my VOSTRO 1700 was cancelled. Money burning in my pocket

Someone please pick from this & I give Dell my hard earned money:

Vostro 1500 = £433.00
Inspiron 1501 = £449.00 (I know there is a long wait :-( )
Inspiron 6400 = £410.00 (I know there is a long wait :-( )

OR let me know if I should wait for a while (max 1 week).

Well the Vostro 1500 is really the one to go for as there is no lead time (so dell say) but as you have waited this long why not hedge your bets and place an order for the 1500 later this week and as next Thursday is Dell update day for specs/prices you can look again and if something better turns up then you could cancel the 1500 order and start again.

The Vostro 1500 is more or less the Inspiron1520 apart from it comes only in Matt Black and no coloured lids, everything else under the hood appears to be the same.

Just a marketing gimmick from Dell.

There's a review in this months PC Pro:

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/125294/dell-vostro-1500.html

Slightly higher spec, but otherwise the same model.
#28
Only 1Gb of RAM though? Taking a step back from the previous Vostro deals or am i missing something?

Johnmcga>>> keyboard seems fine to me, if a little more compact than i am used to

These laptops were superbly priced originally, not so sure now. I actually ordered one, took delivery of it, then sent it back.

Once you start adding all the various options in, the weight becomes virtually unmanageable for a laptop. Mine was pushing 4KG when I got it.

Certainly worth looking at as a desktop replacement, but in terms of portability, I would avoid tbh. There are better options available, like this HP one from Laskys, which is similar spec, has fingerprint reader technology and weighs in under 2.5kg:

http://www.laskys.com/pcs_and_laptops/laptops_and_pdas/laptops/hp_pavilion_dv2535.html

Also worth noting that Currys have a similar model in store price at £899. I expect it'll be reduced in the next sale to £698 and they'll make a big song and dance about the £200 reduction. The swines.

Also worth noting, in terms of laptops and Currys:

- price point ends in ..99 - new stock
- price point ends in ..98 - stock at end of line
- price point ends in ..97 - stock discontinued, limited and often 'Managers Special Offer'

Hi all could anyone tell me if there is any major difference between the Dell in this post and:

http://www.staples.co.uk/eng/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?CatIds=%2C&webid=391370&affixedcode=WW

I'm not after anything for gaming really, just would the graphics card have a distinct on general internet browsing, dvd playback, listening to music etc...
I've just ordered one from staples so would appreciate any feedback on it at all (before its too late to return!), cheers guys!

My Vostro took under a week to deliver

I'm very very happy with it

If you're not happy with the 1GB of RAM, buy 2 GB of RAM from http://www.crucial.com/uk/?gclid=CLrfkJu70o4CFQGTMAod9xhj7g for £56.39 delivered & sell you 1GB of RAM on eBay.

So easy to fit a child could do it!

Incidentally Dell want £80 for 2GB of RAM!!!

Actually Dell want £94 on this model to upgrade from 1GB to 2GB. If you buy from Crucial, or others, then you can try to flog the 1GB on ebay.

anyone?

Dell uses much newer technology like santa rosa and DX10 graphics so its a better buy

One thing to avoid on that is the standard screen. I have to say that in the past I have been completely against the truelife screens (and even got into a discussion about it on this site not long ago  ), but the normal screen on the 17" vostro is terrible. By far the worst I've ever seen, especially the vertical viewing angle. Mine is going back tomorrow because of it.

So, much as it pains me to say this, if you are getting the 1700 make sure you get truelife. Ouch. There. I said it. :whistling:

Does that mean laptops now required 2 power supplies to be able to incorporate powerful graphics cards?
