I this is the best deal for the vostro 1500 that's available at the moment for those looking to get one. I wonder if it will go up again next week.

Time to say a little prayer me thinks.

is this laptop better than the zoostorm that was posted earlier?

Bear in mind the 8600 has the crippled ddr2 ram on it, I have one coming on Monday/Tuesday, with upgraded screen/battery/vista ultimate.

My Vostro has apparently died, after only 2 start-up's. :x
If I press the power button, nothing happens (running from mains power cable, not battery). I'm also amazed, that it comes with no proper manual at all - it is a pdf on the laptop, which is useless if you cannot start it up!

Can anyone advise whether Dell will replace with a new unit or insist on fixing this? I'm really not impressed & I'd really like a new one or will return it under the distance selling rules.

Could you explain crippled ddr2 RAM? ordered one of these and worried by this word 'crippled' - thanks

yes, I think so! That takes the biscuit for an excuse to get a home user off the business site!

Absolute nonsense. You should have recorded the conversation and put it on youtube.

Yeah, I twice sent back new Axims to be replaced because the screens had some minor marks on them. Dell paid for all the replacement costs. Don't mention repairs, say it's not working at all and you want it replaced.

Guv - thank you.

I had earlier been persuaded that this needs a replacement motherboard & memory, together with a bios upgrade (they said it was a known fault) and it was booked to be done on-site tomorrow.

However, following your advice, I called back to say I wanted the unit replaced or refunded only. When they said it will take another 10-15 days to replace, I asked for a goodwill gesture, which they said was not possible. I persisted and told them to drop the 9 cell battery to a 6 cell (as they has promised me when I ordered it that it would not protrude from the case), but to replace it with an upgrade to the 7200rpm 160bg HDD. They accepted that, so lets hope this next one works ...

One thing I have found out but was not aware before is that there is NO support available at weekends (which I when I most need it) - that is pretty poor. :x

Good stuff. I assume they are coming to collect the old one? Take a note of the serial number - just in case they do a repair and send it back as new! They probably wouldnt - but its better to be safe. Hope you get better joy from the new one!

Thanks - good point & will record the serial no.

The saga continues ... despite confirming twice on the phone yesterday that the repair man had been cancelled, they have tried twice to come 'round today to fix it! In the end the guy called & said that he would have to record it as 'no one at home', despite me telling him that the repair was cancelled and that I was returning the item.

FYI - he also said there is no newer bios, as this is a new range and the latest bios upgrade disk he had was at least 6 months old!

mine just came yesterday, went for the 1440x900 screen and don't know if Im convinced yet.

How do you find out what make of screen it is?

Is the 256MB 8500GT good enough for Battlefield Vietnam and the like?
