The only advantage this deal has over the very popular £316 Vostro 1500 is if you want Vista Premium with the deal.

Was just comparing your original post spec with what Ive ordered then noticed this line.

I'm dreaming of the day that '5' changes to a '4' lol. With all them backlogs I think I've got a long wait! They've not even been putting any on ebay lately.
#4
good deal, core2duo and 2 gig, this is a good budget specification with Vista....hot vote
#5
Good deal, voted HOT.

Vista Premium + 160gb make it better over the other deal which is flying around.

ive got a visa debit and i buy loads of little bits online with it. I put my details in twice! with del and they cant get authorisation? any ideas why this is, its fine my side, sufficiant funds exp date etc
#7
I vote it hot - I got the Vostro 1000 wich is awesome BUT SERIOUSLY upgrade the processor - even with 2 gig RAM the system will be a little slow - especially upon start up (I'm talking 5 minutes slow)!

I ordered a Vostro (the one with 320GB HDD) 29th December with an estimated delivery date of 18th Jan. On 16th, still in pre-production the estimated delivery date got bumped to 25th Feb!

At 9.30 am yesterday I phoned up Dell Customer Service and complained that I'd had a day off work (lie) on Friday to await delivery and that it was unacceptable to wait this long already and now I would have to wait another month. And I could then find myself bumped again.

This morning I got an email (time stamped 3am) stating that my laptop had been despatched. It does make me wonder if complaining vociferously will get your order moving?

mumbojumbo
But this also defaults to built-in webcam and 160GB HDD, which would have cost £339 with the other package anyway, so £13 to upgrade to Premium in effect .

The only difference between Basic and Premium is that Premium has Media Center, Aero Glass windows and 3-D scrolling?

Don't forget
£311 dell deal also have free 24 months Mcafee security Center protection
But you have to pay £57.99 for 24 months Mcafee securty Center protection with this deal.

Not good as £311 dell deal

Unless like me you remove Mcaffee asap and throw it just as far as you can. Free AVG or others work just as well and dont grab as much resorces.

Cornish, I sympathize; I have been trying to buy a Dell as a second laptop since last Monday 14th Jan. I have tried 7-times with 3 different cards and all orders have been cancelled by Dell even though each bank tells me that there is absolutely no reason for this. In fact, most of the time the bank tells me that funds have not even been requested by Dell. I have tried through Quidco, direct Internet and over the phone all to no avail.

Decided to take it as an omen as I am not that keen on Dell looks and build quality, but the price is very good indeed. So it is another HP Pavilion to go with the one we have already; more expensive but a very good laptop range with nice build quality and good looks.

Good luck

Hi, can anyone tell me the difference or point me to a sight where I can read about the different speeds of processors, this unit comes with 1.4 when is it worth upgrading to 2.0, does it depend what you use the laptop for?

Also I want to play some games so I assume I need to upgrade to Nvida 8400 will the 128meg be ok, after the upgrades the price shoots up so I may just have to keep waiting unless I have missed any other deals,

Not ready to buy just yet and I see the free postage runs out tomorrow, are Dell likely to be doing free postage again anytime soon?

Almost worth the extra money not to have McAfee:whistling:

The first thing I do with any new machine is to wipe it completely and reinstall... :)
#20
I would expect Dell to extend the postage offer. They'll keep milking it until the end of the month at least. I'm on holiday until a week on Friday so won't be ordering until then.

You can get 5% back through Quidco as well saving £17.50.

The link with reducing 1yr warranty to minimum is now at 4:50pm showing £470.07 :(

And I do notice it says 'business' hardware support so presumably this offer is in the business section of Dell's site so potentially you'd lose your consumer rights of 7 working days to reject (albeit having to pay for return postage potentially).

Every time someone says the price is wrong I have to stop what I'm doing to go check it out again.
PLEASE read the first post and do as it says, basketed price is still £353.50 as of this moment.
Also check the top of the page and it tells you that you are on the Dell home site so your consumer rights are intact too.
Business support means that they come to you to repair it rather than you have to send it back.

Does the 9 cell battery stick out alot? Looked at the image on the dell website and it does seem like quite a lot!

I'd got right to the shipping screen with this (decided on the 128mb graphics and the remote for £428.88), but it says on the shipping page the addresss you ship it to has to be registered with your credit card company... Has anyone had a problem with this, as I have no idea whether it is registered with my CC company, but i'll be at work 9-5 weekdays and so can't have it delivered to home...

For those of you in the know, if you had the base £352 system and had enough to get either the 128mb graphics or upgrade to the 1.6ghz processor, which would be most beneficial on this (i've got an Xbox360 so no gaming to that level, but may watch a lot of downloaded video on it...) with the non-truelife screen, would you notice much difference with the graphics at 128mb anyway?

I intend to get this in some form or other when I get home on Wednesday, so any opinion appreciated... can't believe after reading the megathread for the £316 vostro, I missed this Premium one until now!
#32
yeh i ordered the other one now im going to order this and get a refund as the other one is faulty
#33
WOOO i ordered
it again
160 gig bluetooth 2meg camera remote vista premium 376

the other was 357 and that was tracked with rpoints so i should get this for 376-16 so 360!

For those interested in this, it appears they've extended the free shipping to 30th Jan, so unless they fiddle with this offer in other areas, it should be available for another week... (so that's another week of umming and ahhing over something I probably shouldn't get!)

You join 2 ( or sometimes 3) pins together. ..... however the successful use of this has been with desktops. Extra cooling can easily be added.
Overclocking laptops is always extra risky.

lots more if you google;-)

If Orville has done this and it has been working without probs for a while i wish he would tell us all about it.:-p

EDIT : found this now:

Q: I have a T5470 1.6ghz core 2 duo 2MB L2 800fsb 8x multiplier socket P CPU in a dell vostro 1500. Anyone known what pins I have to bridge to get the fsb to 1066?

A: There are no mobile chipsets that will support 1066 so modding it is not possible. Also intel locked it so if you try a pin mod you can't use your higher multipliers...

I knew about the desktop modding (done it myself on an P4 a while back).

I didn't think it was possible to mod a mobile cpu actually inside a laptop though.
