Yeah but isn't it another £60.00 delivery on top?

Good spot IF you want a BUSINESS purchase - ie are happy to do without the benefits of the distance selling regulations - which would give you 7 working days to 'reject' the notebook 'as new' if it didnt meet your needs (though you would potentially still have to pay ££ to return it to Dell).

Not that VISTA BUSINESS is not the same as HOME versions

£325.48 is the delivered price.

Follow the OP's tip to increase the HD to 160GB. It may be peverse but doing so reduced the final price to that which OP quoted so despite the 10% reduced £18 increase for that bigger HD there must be another Dell saving associated with having that option in the configuration.
#5
XP Pro would better than Vista on this laptop. Very good spot. Voted hot.

If you choose Vista Business you are entitled to replace it with XP Pro as per Microsoft’s licensing terms and can move back to Vista in the future if you like. You have to get the free XP Pro disc direct from Dell and install it yourself though; this is speaking from experience.

1gb is not enough memory to run Vista really so best to stick with XP and this is good value

Please post a link to any laptop for which this is not true.

is 1Gb RAM enough?

It's not ideal.

I'd prefer to pay £399 (or less depending on vouchers) for this:

It'san excellent notebook. I bought my Vostro 1500 about 6 months ago and still happy with it. However, I highly recommend swapping the akku and grafic card as the provided options for this offer are very basic. Go for the 9-cell Lithium-Ion Battery and a Nvidia grafic card instead. The 9-cell battery sticks out a bit but will reward you with 4-5 hours running time. Oh, and 1 Gig memory is a bit on the short end. 2 Gb are must have, especially on Vista. So overall, this configuration is very basic, but you get what you pay for..

I bought one of these but with 2gb ram for the same price 3 months ago .Overall quite happy with it - an extra gb of ram should cost less than £15 and is well worth it with Vista installed.

Nice spot - went for one of these... :)

Wheres your thread for the 1400?
are you talking about the original deal 3 weeks ago?
#26
The deal one i bumped as it came back albeit without the keyboard deal. I ordered one last night for myself with bluetooth, trulife and webcam for £351 which i thought was a good deal.
#27
I bought the 1510 deal posted 2 weeks ago, that came with vista business, I rang Dell and got them to put home Premium on instead, no problem, I also winged at sales guy cos I wanted the true life & the upgrade was for the higher pixel screen for £50 I got him down to £20 cos I said I would lose ou on 5% quidco if I bought over the phone. It came on Tue & I think it looks great

This has been discussed a few times and it's been concluded (not least by MikeT no less) that as long as you enter your NAME where it asks for business details you WILL still be able to arrange to have it returned for a FULL refund withing 7 working days. I've confirmed this myself with Dell Support and they even confirmed they would pay return carriage.

lol. think he means rechargeable battery (German)

this is why i'll never recommend or buy dell again:

1. recommended a very non-tech savvy friend to buy one
2. i set it up for her then 10 minutes after i left the house the power supply inside the laptop went pop
3. a foreign based dell support centre reduced her to tears asking about about things like memory and psus and configurations.
4. i agreed to speak to them on her behalf hey asked me to do some basic reset procedures then asked if i had a phillips head screwdriver to hand!
5. i then took 20 minutes convincing them that i would not accept an engineer visit but wanted a new machine.
6. they eventually gave in which only left me with 3 further conversations over the next 2 days trying to organise pickups and dropoffs

All conversations were carried out on such a low quality, low volume connection i basically had to ask the other party to repeat nearly everything said.

That was about 4-5 months ago. i really hope things have changed but.....

I know that often support is a lucky dip but even so, that's put me off for a long time.

You can select Genuine Windows® XP Professional - English for no additional cost during the sale process, for those of you who are concerened about Vista.

Where is the deal/link for this?

Thanks

not a great deal in my opinion. You can get a Samsung R60 with a far better spec for an additional £50.

Thanks, for the extra £45 (before quidco) do you think its worth it over this Dell?

Samsung

Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 Processor (1.83 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2 MB Cache)
* 2 GB Memory

Dell

Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor T5270 (1.40 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2-cache)
1024MB (2x512) 667MHz DDR2 Dual Channel

this is the difference really so is the procesor being higher and the Ram being higher is it worth £45 thats the question here really as I am tempted with the Samsung myself.
#38
And can someone tell me what the MHz bit means?
#39
That would be megaherthz, essentially the speed of the processor in the machine. I guess the Samsung is a better deal, comes with 2gigs of RAM as well as a faster processor for only £45 (less with Quidco) more.

IMHO, yes.

I am going to check one out at my local Currys - they are supposed to look v smart for a budget machine....

will update
