Good piece of kit at a decent price, but it still looks utterly, utterly awful.

Really? I think the vostros look really nice.

I ummm'd and arrrr'd for a while over the XPS1530 as it is lovely but as my lappy sits under the sofa or i will be looking at the screen i decided to get the better performer. With the vostro you get better spec processor, graphics, screen, disc and memory for the money

Looks are subjective. Performance is not.

Got one of these on a previous offer - delivered yesterday. Watch out for a very dodgy keyboard layout - Dell have screwed up very badly on some 1510's.

The keys on the row above the space bar are one character over to the left. (e.g. m is to the right of k instead of to the left). This may not sound like a big deal but if you are used to the normal qwerty layout it is a total pain. I keep typing .con instead of .com.

Unless Dell can fix it mine is going back.

Dell is offering to replace the incorrect keyboards as far as I am aware, give support a call Tuesday.

How's the glossy finish on these?

feck feck feck! Missed the delivery today and I am going on holiday for a week sunday!

Was going to pick it up tom but now i cant find the slip (2 kids under 3 grrrr...) so i dont know who its with or where the depot is :(

The dell website says "walsh western" but thats not the name of the shipper.. Can anyone advise on who theirs was shipped with? Even better if you have the address of the birmingham depot - all i remember is it was off J5 of M6 :(:(

edit - a bit of google searching and found its business post :)

Got it today - screen is laavely (XWGA+), keyboard is a royal PITA.

Ran it thru sisoft and it roughly 4 times faster than my old 1.5ghz celeron M. Surprisingly, the sata disc is fractionally slower than my ATA (20ms v 18ms), though thruput is up from 30mb/s to nearer 40. Perhaps it will "loosen up" ;)

Go into the bios and you should find some settings for the hard drive, it will be on "quiet" I think and you can make it faster but noisier if you wish.

good tip, will have a look

gonna do some research on trimming vista and reinstall. Runs pretty fast atm, xp would fly!!!!

Can you easily upgrade to a faster processor yourself like the 2.4 GHz T8300 or 2.5 GHz T9300 at a later date on this specific laptop? The processor upgrade prices seem a little steep, here are new prices from Ebuyer:
T8100 £125 new - Dell upgrade £85
T8300 £152 new - Dell Upgrade £165
T9300 £195 new - Dell upgrade £275

Mine hasnt been shipped yet, do you think they have sorted the keyboards out before they are gonna send any more.

Dell is offering to replace the incorrect keyboards as far as I am aware, give support a call Tuesday. It may hold up your order if you tell them it must have the correct keyboard before shipping, get them to agree to swop it via an engineer visit or DIY may be as its quite easy to do.

Surely they arnt continuing to ship orders with the wrong keyboards, they should just temporarily stop production. Mine has a delivery date of 21st May, so hopefully they will fix this by then.

Ive had mine ship with the incorrect keyboard. Also, can anyone who has theirs right click on the desktop, click personalisation, go to the bit about resolution, click advanced next to the monitor part, go to the monitor tab, click on generic p&p monitor and then properties. Click on the 3rd tab, and in the dropdown box, choose hardware id. This gives the make and model of your screen; I have AUO2077 (AU Optronics, 1440x900), and Im less than impressed. There is significant bleeding at the bottom, and the screen seems brighter on the left than on the right. Ive read on the internet that there is a known problem with this screen, so Im going to ring up tomorrow and hopefully get an engineer to replace it with an LG screen instead. Does anyone have any experience of this?

I really hope dell dont ship mine with the wrong keyboard, surely it easier for them to stop production for now. As for the screen, do you really want a less than week olf laptop being changed by an engineer, I would just send it back.

Ive just spoken to dell, and they are aware of the keyboard issue, however, the new keyboard hasnt been released yet, and is why they have stopped production of the 1510 at the moment. He said I could get it replaced at a later date. About the screen issue, I could get it replaced tomorrow, however, when I pressed him, it turns out it would be refurbished, which is conpletely unacceptable for a new machine. He also didnt know which screens were available, but apparently the lg is only available in the US, and not the UK. The main issue I have is that the left side of the screen is brighter than the right when looking straight at the screen from a central position.

I have until Friday to return the machine for a full refund, which Id do without hesitation if only the current dell deals were any good. I might wait and see what the new offers are tomorrow. Strangely, I wasnt offered the option of a full system replacement

Be very careful (as you seem to be) when accepting 'repairs' to a new product. Once you start agreeing to enginer replacement of parts etc you're deemed to have accepted the product and it starts getting far more complicated making sellers do as they should.

Dell shipped mine thursday, due monday, and I have been assured I will get the revised keyboard, for the delay they have gave me the £30 half price mx3200 keyboard I ordered for free.
