Pretty good spec - voted hot.
#2
You can get the laptop in red, or the 64 bit version of windows, for no extra price.
Ex deal voted hot, do you know if you can order from a private address.
#3
Looks a good deal.

I assume that it woul be better to upgrade the standards WiFi card
Dell Wireless 1397 Mini Card (802.11 b/g) European add £0.00

to this one instead as it has better connectivity speeds, and costs no more:
Intel Pro Wireless WI-FI 5100 (802.11a/g/Draft-n) MiniCard European add £0.00

Any reason not to?
[mod]#4
Anyone can order from Dell small business, just put your own name in the box asking for a business name. Returns are not so easy sometimes on Small business so only order if your sure its what you want.
The pro wifi card should be a nice upgrade at that price ;-)
#5
Very good spec at this price. Heat added.

P.s. It seems that Vostro models are MUCH cheaper than other brands/models with similar spec. Anyone knows what the reasons would be?
#6
On the free wirelesss upgrade card it says Draft N,
Anyone know the difference between this and Wireless N
[mod]#7
It was called draft as the final spec was still being set up so it couldnt be called certified.

In Sept the spec was finally set, so any new N kit will have certified against it.

According to the Wi-Fi Alliance, the group that tests and certifies wireless products to ensure their interoperability, all existing Wi-Fi Certified Draft N wireless products will still work with the final standard.

*************** Absolutely Avoid Dell !!!!!!!!! ***************************

I placed an order on the 10th and paid an extra £30 each for " Fastrack Delivery ".for 2 laptops....bog standard and no extra frills that might delay delivery. They were GUARANTEED 48 hours despatch I'm still sat here on the 17th...... and nowhere near getting my 2 laptops.

Dell blame the courier...but I've got the full tracking info and Dell only delivered these to the courier yesterday. Dell now admit they are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy behind on orders, can't now promise a pre Christmas delivery...but won't entertain a refund of my extra £30 x 2...since it was " a genuine offer, but unavoidably delayed, and therefore no refund can be made ".

I've spent literally hours trying to get ANY sort of sense out of Dell....... at 5p per minute and chasing the courier at 10p per minute. In total I've spent.....honestly!!...over £27 in calls while both keep me hanging on and forever sending you in a loop.

Dell's USELESS Mumbai bloody Call Centre is full of morons who read from a script and can't do a thing to help.

I can't even get through to anyone to cancel my order.:x

I've had Dell in the past...trust me, from thsi experience NEVER AGAIN will I deal with these shysters.

It may not work if you use a voucher, but there's no telling.

Don't know if you've tried this already but if you go on to 'saynoto0870.com' you can find alternative numbers for dell...perhaps there might be a number there that you could call??

Does anyone know how Windows is shipped with Dell? Is it a full Windows disk (unlikely) , a "Dell" Windows disk which does almost the same as Windows but only on the specificl laptop it comes with, or one you burn yourself similar to what Acer does?

The only thing thats stopping me buying is the screen. I would have preferred the LED backlit one but looks like you cant downspec it.
#21
ganon;7255328

It seems a reasonable spec on paper, but the CPU seems to be the weak link. It also seems to be out of stock, so you are unlikely to get one anyway.
#22
How do you get it down to 495? Mine gets to 479 + VAT = 550.85

Do Dell ever allow you to remove the OS?

Do Dell ever allow you to remove the OS?

Yes if you buy a server ;-) Other than that you will have to fight them for the chance to refuse to use the supplied OS and go for a small refund.
#26
What do you mean, remove?

If you simply want to replace it with something else, e.g. XP Pro, they can't stop you.

As far as claiming a refund for not accepting the Windows 7 EULA, then don't bother trying! I've been trying for 2 weeks now and they won't even entertain the idea. The representative I have been arguing with, via email, has now washed her hands of the matter and told me to write to Dell, Ireland.

If you have weeks free to fight them, and it will be a fight, then go for it. But I promise you, you will end up having to take it all the way to the small claims court and even then there's no guarantee you'll win.

Note: if you read the EULA on the supplied laptop it probably says if you don't accept the EULA then you have to return the whole laptop for a refund. It used to say you could claim a refund for just the OS, from the retailer, or from MS, but not any more. Well, at least mine doesn't. I think they've changed it because it left it open for people to claim refunds.

Dells T&Cs mention nothing of a refund either. They simply give you the chance to decline and return the software.

There are a few stories on the internet about people succeeding, but at least one of them was a journalist and writing articles on the process - that probably added a lot of weight to his claim. Average Joe? No chance.

Whats the delivery time on this laptop?

If I follow the link on Firefox, and then on Intenet Explorer, I get a different style of customisation page.

The version I get on Firefox looks more modern, but the editing doesn't work. If I try to change to Windows 64 bit it doesn't accept the change, or in fact any other change. Anyone else experienced this?

Build Quality / Reliability in comparsion with their studio ranges (and this is coming from a Dell fan!)

They come with a dell windows dvd and will only install on compatible Dell machines, so you could use the dvd to install windows 7 on another compatible dell. Check dell's website for windows 7 compatible pc's, some require a bios update before installing. If the model doesn't support windows 7 it will ask you to activate windows after the install.

Nice CPU, weak GPU.

I hope that spec. sheet is inaccurate though, as putting 800mhz ram in a system with an FSB of 1066mhz is a little wasteful.

Also why Win7 32bit?
If I was forced to leave XP and goto Win7, i'd also use it as the opportunity to move from 32bit to 64bit.

Definitely go for the wireless-n capable option if it's a free upgrade.

IMO not hot, but not cold either.
Some will value the superior CPU, others will curse the inferior GPU.
Swings & round-abouts.

It's a limitation of the chipset. The RAM is dual-channel though so still faster than the CPU can read it. (The previous Intel chipset had that limitation too; then the CPU had 800MHz FSB but 667MHz RAM.)

Windows 7 64-bit is a no-cost option, as is Vista Business. Or you can have licenses for both Win 7 32-bit and XP SP3 for £5 extra.

Another option to consider is "Keep Your Hard Drive" for £7. Then if your HD breaks, you don't have to send it (and all the data on it) back to Dell in order to get a replacement.

If the specification quoted is correct, then yes it is a dedicated card.

Probably better asked in the Acer Thread... but nevermind.

Yes, the Acer's GPU ( HD 3650 ) has 512MB of dedicated graphics memory. (though the spec. is unclear what speed the memory is; given it's budget pedigree it's probably DDR2)

After a littel research, i've found a good number of places quoting the machine (5530G + HD 3650) as having only 256mb of dedicated graphics memory - so be careful, Argos might have the specs wrong.
However confirming or denying this suspicion is impossible, as Argos don't appear to quote the manufacturers part number for the laptop.

With it's weak RM-70 CPU the Acer will probably score somewhere between 5000-6000 in 3dmark2005.

Hi, I have been looking for a good laptop for a while to use for architecture work do people know if this would be up to the job?
Adobe , sketchup, autocad etc
I also would like a desktop for rendering and more 3d work if anyone has any links? Thanks
#37
for architecture and visualisations work - id recommend to go for Dell Presicion - i have mine for about year and a half now and i am really happy with it. Just choose WUXGA screen (1900 px wide) and enjoy :)
About rendering machine - look at dell website also - they are good in that. If you want extreme power i can recommend Oxagon website - oxagon.co.uk - they are really goood in assembling top computers for good prices. hope i helped a bit ;)

That’s not at all unusual. You could install a C2Q Extreme Edition with a 1600 FSB in a P45 chipset and the maximum officially supported DDR2 RAM speed is 800MHz. FSB speeds have typically been ahead of RAM speeds for years.

Having down graded to Vostro from Latitude..

The build quality there is world of difference...

There is no latch for the lid..plasticky feel, keyboard not good...Finger print sign is rubbish-don't waste your money on it..

All compared to Latitude of course..

will recommend u try it out first..
