The Vostro 1700 top of the range ecode N101703 comes with 17.0" UltraSharp Wide Screen WUXGA (1900x1200) TFT Display with TrueLife and this reflective screen may be putting some off the deal.

This ecode doesnt have that reflective screen and is quite a bit cheaper because of it although the other most inportant parts like cpu memory and hard drive sizes remain the same.
You could of course upgrade the 128meg graphics to 256meg and even add the web camera and still have a price of £658.

The 9 cell battery is a must at £11.75

The Dell Travel Remote Control is perhaps a bit of a toy, but its only £5.88 and stores in the express port when not used.

MikeT,
if I do all of the upgrades to this what's the difference to the one in your last post that is now expired?

Mike T,
I have been watching these forums with great interest over last week or two - and am on the verge of ordering a vostro 17" (i think) .
I just cannot decide if i need(want) the 1900 * 1200 true life screen or the one in the offer above . can anyone help make my mind up -perhaps give me a link to some screen shots of these screens in action?
i dont need it for gaming , maybe the occasional video and some photo editing otherwise its office apps and internet use predominantly .

From the pricing above where mike adds features to arrive at £650 approx that means the true life adds about £50 to the price -is it worth the extra !

This would be my first dell purchase -do they offer any discounts for first time buyers ?

Thanks v much

Its not expired, its here http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103740

This one N1017002 has a non reflective screen for a start and is a lot cheaper because of that.
If you upgrade this one to the same as N1017003 all you will do is spend more for the same, not quite my idea ;-)
[mod]#5
Mcg, only you will be able to tell which screen you want, go to pc world and take a look at some reflective screens and see for yourself. The hi res truelife screen is in fact £105.75 extra so quite a saving if you dont need it, again if you dont need the extra graphics you can save some more there.

Others may be able to advise you on the photo editing abilties of each screen.

put 305 in the first ecode box and N1017002 in the second with no leading or trailing spaces.

Is this worth the extra £100 instead of this

Looks like a decent deal but personally, i think a 17" laptop is a bit too big for a laptop if you're going to carry it around quite often but if that's what you're looking for, then it seems a decent deal.

My bros actually looking for a 14" laptop, does anyone know of a good deal on one?

I need a laptop that will play SIMS2 and preferably has Win XP on it (but may put up with Vista).

My max budget is around £450, but dont really want to spend this much..... any suggestions?

Be wary of this resolution on a screen this size as it makes everything very small. Take a look at a laptop with a similar resolution in a store I suggest.
#15
just some points to consider;
if you intend to use a laptop as a portable pc then a 17" screen becomes a pain. the laptop is just too big for that purpose. the reflective screen whilst lovely in a dark room is unusable outside or by a bright window. 1900*1200 is very small on a 17" screen, this is a resolution suited to a 19" screen. would you really be using this as your default?

if you intend to use this as a replacement desktop then IMHO it would be a good choice.

I got one of these in a previous thread, and at the time alot of the extra's where then standard, like the 256 graphics, 1900x1200 etc, I managed to get the 17" t7500 2 gig ram 160 hdd bluetooth and the next gen wireless true life screnn web cam etc and the 9 cell for £781 delivered. I love the screen the reflections can be a pain but ok. and the full size keyboard is great. My only trouble has been that the first one i received had some dirt/dust in the lcd so arranged for an exchange and the second one was a refurb with a faulty screen. I still have the original and waiting a replacement, as well as a lappy bag and Virus software thrown in for good measure.

The same spec turned up for me this morning - only ordered it 4 days ago. I hope I didn't get your return!

How did you know the second was a refurb?

There where finger prints all over it, the protective plastic covers where not all in place and the slam panel on the bottom had the plastic protective cover screwed in underneath so the only way to remove it was to remove the plate.

Great lappy though, and arrived alot quicker than they say they would. i was quoted 4 weeks and got it in a week.

What price did you get it for?

And just got to find out now how easy it is to put XP on t ;)

No way! That's disgraceful! I haven't opened mine yet, it's still sat under my desk.

The optional upgrades I got were:

160Gb @ 7200rpm
T7500 C2D
Travel Remote
Bag
9-cell battery
And got Home Premium instead of Business

£750 in the end.

Thanks for the info :)

Originally I had someone quote £740 and used that as a benchmark but that was without the bag / remote and with the T7300. After calling a few more time and with many threats of "leaving it", he came down to £750. I was quite surprised myself because I kept on thinking "You've taken it too far this time..." but he came down.

I think best advice is to go and look at some in a shop, as it's down to personal choice. I've had my new Dell laptop for 2 weeks now, it's 1900x1200 on a 15 inch screen and I don't think it's too small at all, it's great!

Others may not think the same though, so definitely go and look at some to get a proper idea of what would be right for you.

I'm not a gamer so dont really know what spec is needed to run sims2.

The Vostro 1400 is not a good deal right now for under £450 its low spec, even the Inspiron 1501 with reasonable spec is £479.
The Vostro 1000 comes only with Vista so there isnt much I can offer you this week, if your not in a rush wait till Dell update the spec/prices again on 25th Oct and see what that brings.

Further to advice received on here - i have been to pc world and the true life or equivalent glossy screens do look fantastic - even with all that flourescent lighting .
Of course never easy in there to hover for too long without being pounced on several times by helpful assistants ....

two observations - is this vostro 1700 and the higher model with the 1900*1200 glossy tru life basically an inspiron 1720 ? if so pc pro magazine has just rated 6 out of 6 albeit the test machine had a larger hd

secondly i cant see the travel remote today on dells site when configuring vostros- i have definately seen them before so is it safe to assume no longer an option ??

anyone know of any other discount codes currently available please before i order - i am now registered with quidco so will use that
thanks

As I have not bought a Vostro I cant be sure if the os is on disc though I would expect it. If it didnt come I would email them to get one sent out.
#32
I got the Vostro 1400 with the Vista Home Premium reinstallation cd with my laptop.
#33
Thats great thanks v m.
btw how do you rate your vostro?
#34
I rate it 9.9/10. Its very well built, has a metal case so heat dissapates better and feels more sturdy. The keybaord is spill resistant etc and even more expensive Sony laptops dont have this feature. Its very fast and can run games very well. I wont give it 10/10 as the weight of the 1400 may be too much for those who want it to be ultra light like a macbook (but then macbooks are double the price). I find the weight to be perfect and not heavy. Everything else is all good and its a perfect laptop.
#35
Thanks Manzi ,
thats probably just what i wanted to hear.
i think i will order the 1700 with wuxga 1900*1200 screen and use it as a desktop replacement.
fingers crossed i can give it the same rating !

I am looking at spending around £720 on the 1700 .
If i order through quidco i get 5% cashback i think ....
in your experience will i gain more than that in discounts or add ons by phoning dell sales ?

Anyone know if they 1700's are delayed ?

When you phone up ask for the 5% as you can get it from cashback sites online. Then haggle for the other freebies too.

I don't think so - initially when I ordered they quoted 4 weeks but it arrived 2 business days later (that was last week). I love my Vostro. I feels rock solid and the screen is amazing. Very, very pleased.

Definitely. I started off with a budget of £700 but upped it slightly cos I really wanted the faster HDD and better processor. I managed to get the below for £750 after a lot of haggling. After it arrived I rang to "return it as I wasn't happy" and they gave me a £30 refund as a goodwill gesture to keep it. I wanted to go for more but was worried they would call my bluff and just collect it. So all in all it was £720. :-D
