£90 to upgrade the monitor!! abit annoying
[mod]#3
Yes its a pity they dont give the option to drop Office from the mix as not everyone needs that. There would then be some money in for upgrading the screen for CAD use.

I want a laptop like this, but price is a bit over my budget. Guess I'll have to wait a few more months.
#5
I've got that exact spec laptop sitting here on my desk, and it's ace.

Bulky mind you. You wouldn't want to carry around all the time. It's very much a desktop replacement rather than a portable.

Yes, I have the same spec here plus truelife screen but V1500 and I am well pleased with mine. I just sold my V1700, as you say they really are just too big and heavy to be portable for long, but a nice desktop replacement that can wander around the home with you.

Nope. It's absoutely fine. This isan amazing spec that will be great for gaming to.

looks good

Office 2007 is very well designed, nearly every feature included is perfect in my opinion, well worth upgrading from office 2003.
#14
The spec looks good, but the laptop itself doesn't. The case is just too bulky and cheap looking IMO.

I'm looking for a laptop with this sort of spec, but I don't think I could bring myself to buy this one.
#15
A huge amount of laptop for the price and to get a licenced copy of Office included for £645 is a superb bargain. To get a 6mb cached Penryn processor for this money is excellent.

I'm still using Office 97 and see no reason to upgrade.

Do you work for Microsoft?

Love that processor, a friend wants a 1700 but a budget of 500 wont get it. Will tell him as soon as price drops to <500 (without office)

Lol i was thinking the same, not many people think the new Office is better.

How long to Dell's Last? My Laptop here is on year 6 and this does seem a great price but not for a two year lap top

what kind of outputs does it have, is it VGA or HDMI?

From the documentation MikeT gave, I think it's VGA:

hope they add penryns to more of their cheaper laptops.

dont forget quidco for 5% off the exc. VAT price.

shame it doesnt have DVI or HDMI out or spdif audio out, no option to upgrade battery and its 10/100 not 10/100/1000:(.

Expensive for a laptop that doesnt have the above missing specs.

I think office 2007 is well worth the upgrade, its much better than 97!
#23
you would think it would as mentioned above it would have hdmi or dvi as mention for that price, still a decent lappy...

Hi there mate.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you there about the case looking cheap. Maybe you haven't seen one of these in the flesh (I have the Vostro 1700) and it is a very sturdy feeling notebook. The materials used are brilliant...the bottom of the case is made from some sort of metal alloy, as is the lid cover. Compare this to the HP 17" laptop my sister got from PC World for £500 which is so flimsy! The amount of flex in the keyboard, the shoddy lid catch mechanism, even the plastics on the base of the chassis feel rubbish.

I feel that the all-black look of the Vostro is understated yet elegant. You've got to remember that this is aimed at the business user, meaning that its not meant to be blinged out like the HP's which have touch sensitive controls, decals in the paintwork etc. What some say the vostro is lacking in design, it certainly makes up for in build quality. beleive me when I say it is top notch.

although it is a heavy ****** :whistling:!

thats just the point of view of a happy customer

P.S. the price thatg this is at now really hurts me...thats what I paid last summer when theyfirst came out with only a 2.2 GHz CPU, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, bluetooth and the high res true life screen. the 2.5 GHz CPU on this must be a beast!!

Bang for buck it may well be yes, but it is quite a different beast to the mispriced M1530.

Its bigger, heavier and not as pretty, but it does have all the right bits if your looking for a desktop replacement, I wouldnt want to be carrying it around too much.

It would have been a real bargain had it not had Office (not all need it) and was the cost of that cheaper ;-)

Just be warned Dell aren't as on the ball with replacements/refunds for these laptops as they usually seem to be with monitors and computers!

I'm still waiting for them to arrange to collect my Vostro 1700 from November with a faulty screen! (They did send an engineer out who agreed a laptop under 30 days old shouldn't need taking apart for a new screen!).

I'm pushing for a refund now as the spec has probably halved in price by now! (and its been sat in the box since Day 1!!!) :?
#29
could you sell ms office on say ebay , what do you think you could get for it ?

I really like this but the price is just a bit to much.

was going to buy the vostro 1700 last month with the T8100 cpu,256 gt graphics, fo 515. but that has shot upto 615 this month.:x

Buying from Dell Small business site always requires a bit of care in that you must use your own name when it askes for a business name and select "home" as the place of use.
If you have problems getting customer satisfaction from SB then try calling dell customer relations to get a solution, Dell is a big company and its more a case of knowing which buttons to push to resolve an issue more easily.
Personally I have never yet to have an issue that they have not been able to resolve to my complete satisfaction.
