How good are the intergrated graphics?

N.B. From a trawl round the 'net since mine was having problems booting it appear to be a common problem on the Vostro 200 & 400s (do a search for ' vostro "black+screen" '), Dell don't seem to want to know and there isn't a fix I could find.

Mike - DELL man is great as usual!

This earlier deal of yours still seems to be available and overall I think it works out better value even though it is £100 pounds more. And it still seems to be available today.

on the hard drive upgrade section, it states:-
160GB Hard Drive with Dell™ DataSafe Local™ Backup solution (2x160GB) - English [add £80.00]

250GB Hard Drive with Dell™ DataSafe Local™ Backup solution (2x250GB) - English [add £100.00]
Shouldn't it be 320gb and 500gb respectively?

No because they are mirroring, so effectively you only have the lower amount of storage space unless you "break" the software mirroring them together.

I was surprised to see there was any sort of problem - A friend of mine got a 200 before Christmas (an offer posted on this site), I stripped ALL of the Dell stuff off it with a full instal before he even switched it on, and it has been 100% since. I Ghosted it so he can reinstall in minutes, don't like to rely on the Dell version of things, and it is all nicely tuned up for his wants, although he hasn't needed to fall back on the Ghost image yet. It was so good, based on what he paid and it's performance & low noise level, I am waiting to see an offer somewher near as good as the one he got, although up to now there hasn't been one close!

Well, on reading some of the Google finds from that search, discounting the Linux based problems(!), and that relating to Laptops, there is actually very little people are saying on this, a few threads, that's all. It is up to people to scan through those web posts and see if it puts them off, it doesn't for me, based on the massive number of units Dell sell, and the few problems I am seeing commented on.

Really, really poor for any kind of gaming but it will run any non-3D demanding application absolutely fine. It's even perfectly adequate for photo editing and the likes, though the fact it takes up a little system memory for its own use isn't ideal. However, I'd be very surprised if the Motherboard didn't have a PCI-E slot (in fact, I'd be stunned) that you could put a decent card into.

Whether the PSU will be good enough for a better card is another issue, but if you're just looking at a mid-range graphics card it shouldn't be a problem.

How many PCI slots will the motherboard have? Is there anyway of knowing or finding out?

Is there any way to get free delivery? £60-odd is really steep for only a base unit.

Thanks for link - I had seen a VOSTRO through the Dell Small Businiess Site for (as you say) £188. Couple of Qs/help please....

(1) Am I ok to buy through Small Business Site (as a personal user)?
(2) Any thoughts/practical use of VISTA? IN particular the "Business" Edition which VOSTRO comes with. Reading some "chat" pages, VISTA gets a bad press, but I'm not sure if that's just because people are disappointed it's not a LOT better than XP (rather than a BIT better), given the time spent and peoples expectations
(3) Given my wife and I are "basic" users - Internet, saving family pics, burning the odd disk - would this be sufficient? and can anyone explain the different Drive options it has? (Do I need DVD or "Combo" to read DVDs/CDs and burn CDs?

Thanks in advance for any help
[mod]#16
Rider69, yes anyone can buy via SB but be sure to use your own name when asked and say its for home use. Either OS will be fine for your limited uses. Combo drive will read dvd's and write to cd. A dvdrw which this has will do both and also write to dvd.

Slightly off topic, but can anyone tell me whats the difference between a Dell Inspiron & Vostro Laptop?

I ask as it seems as though u can pick up a Vostro for a lot less than a Inspiron with similar specs, even the Inspirons on the outlet store.
