I think they may have made a mistake with the memory on the video card (think it's only 128mb). Idea: If you order the system and subsequently discover it IS only 128mb, would it be worth trying to get Dell to give a (small) refund?

is it just turbocharged to 512Gb then...?
#3
When I was re-installing the system drivers from the Dell cd, it said this:

nVidia GeForce8300 GS (128MB DDR2 PCI-Express x16 (DVI/VGA))

I don't know enough about grapics cards, but it sure looks like its only 128mb?
#4
Cheers for this Mike.

Cancelled my delayed unit with the X1300 card and reordered this one saving £40.

There seems to be precious little info on the 8300GS card with or without 512mb of memory but as long as it runs my apps I'll be happy.

I had a look at other dell sites and it looks like dell errored on the discription, I would say 128Meg on board and the rest grabbed from system memory.
If you buy, then this typo could be to your advantage ;-)

Has anyone ordered this today and if so what is the estimated date of delivery? I want one but don't want to wait a month for it really.
#7
Does look that way.

From Nvidia.....

The revolutionary TurboCache technology utilizes the additional bandwidth of the PCI Express graphics bus to reach higher levels of graphics performance than traditional video memory solutions, delivering the performance and features you expect from NVIDIA graphics hardware. By allowing the graphics processing unit (GPU) to share the capacity and bandwidth of dedicated video memory and dynamically available system memory, TurboCache turbocharges performance and provides larger total graphics memory.

This seems to be an updated 7300 GS (to allow DX10 features at a guess) so, the ATI card will probably out perform it although neither are gaming cards by a long stretch. Still, as I said earlier £40 saving will probably buy you a better card if you shop around.

14th Sept for mine

MikeT, I did buy it with this installed, expecting 512mb. How an you think it could be to my advantage? Thanks for any advice.

whats the differance between then inspiron and this vastro model??

Will I need a wireless modem adapter if I have this upstairs and the modem and other pc is downstairs?

And I also want to plug it into my samsung 26" screen, what will I need to do this?

Many thanks.
#12
I not really techy, when it comes to the accessory part, you can add on a v92 data/fax modem £23.50. I take it I need to add this on to connect to the web via my wireless modem (hardwired or wireless?)

Mike this is a good deal, think im going to go for this.

Does anyone know how long this will take to come?

thanks

No you dont need the modem, your wired web will be via the built in LAN socket to your existing modem and wifi will be via a usb dongle available elseware cheaper than dell.

silly question time again Mike, so I just connect to my router with an ethernet cable?

and another one:giggle: how many usb ports does this have, I cant see that anywhere.

Thanks again:)

lastly....vista or xp? do you think MS will stop servicing xp soon with updates etc

I'll just to point out for reference that this doesn't include the card reader as standard whereas the last deal did include it. I missed that one and I'll need to get it added in (£12ish)! My fault for rushing through the order process!

Does anyone know whether Dell ship Vista 32-bit or 64-bit? Is there a way to choose?
#17
A few questions I need answering please?

1)When you order from dell how long do they take to deliver?
2) I am due to move into a new house in Novemember, do you think prices will fall by then?
3) I need a pc to go on the internet browsing and downloading listening to music and converting dvds etc! (what kind of system will I be looking at)
4) I would require a good sized monitor too any advice?
5) I will play games like football manager and maybe fifa and pro evo what kind of grpahics card will I need?

If you can help me with this thanks in advance!
#18
The Vostro has 8 USB Ports (4 back 4 front) although I can't remember if the front ports were part of the card reader.
#19
For games like Pro Evo, I think this graphics card will play it OK
Dell usually take about 3 weeks to deliver, depending on how many orders I get suppose. I currently use a 19" monitor, but I use widescreen as it helps with uni work

My Vostro has 4 USB on the back and 4 on the front panel. Presumably they all use the same mobo, so the 4 back ports should be the same and regardless of whether you get the card reader or not, there should be 4 USB and your headphone jack on the front. So, the answer is 8 total USB ports.

As for Vista/XP, I don't really know enough to advise someone else. However, I put a clean copy of XP Pro on mine as soon as I got it (read here: re-partitioned and formatted the drive, then installed a clean copy of XP) and am happy with what I have going.

Edit: I'd mis-counted the number of ports on the front. It's actually 4 (wahoo! I have 2 more than I thought!!!)

Also, I purchased Vista, but just removed it and put XP on my own, as I had an extra license and would prefer to not deal with Vista atm.

thats great, thanks for all the advice.

Going to order this, works out £346.69 for what I want (card reader, speakers and monitor) and thats a lot cheaper than I have seen anywhere else. will just have to wait a few weeks :giggle:

Thanks Mike T for the post!

A few questions I need answering please?

1)When you order from dell how long do they take to deliver?

I normally expect 10ish days and have never been let down. It can be alot longer though if they are out of certain parts or if there is high demand.

2) I am due to move into a new house in Novemember, do you think prices will fall by then?

For the system you're after I dont think it will drop significantly by then.

delboyuk2005uk
3) I need a pc to go on the internet browsing and downloading listening to music and converting dvds etc! (what kind of system will I be looking at)

Its the 'converting dvds' that will be most resource intensive. Nearly all the systems on the Dell site are capable.. you just need to decide how quick!

delboyuk2005uk
4) I would require a good sized monitor too any advice?

Without the need for desktop space for design etc.. my 20" widescreen is the best I have had. Big enough to comfortably open 2 windows together but it's a bit to small to comfortably watch a movie from the other side of the room.
It's all about ££!

delboyuk2005uk
5) I will play games like football manager and maybe fifa and pro evo what kind of grpahics card will I need?

No direct experience with these games I'm afraid. I don't think they require anything 'special'

If you can help me with this thanks in advance![/QUOTE]

I dont think you could go far wrong with this system TBH.. Possibly purchase it with the monitor to sell on and replace with a bigger screen if you are feeling flush!

All my opinion but hope it helps

8 USB ports, manual Here

Router to LAn port via your own cable, yes.

I'd go for Vista and if you dont like it instal XP yourself and come back to vista once the bugs are gone, you still have the licience then too.

I have also cancelled my delayed x1300 and will reorder later today, perhaps the x1300's were the problem??
#26
Football Manager doesnt need any graphic card really so that will play like a dream as its completely CPU/RAM intensive
Im umming and arghing over this deal, I want a geforice 8800gts (320mb) to go into but i know you cant overclock Dell PCs, so tempting with the E6550 CPU for £40 extra
#27
Great deal, voted hot. Before I strike - has anyone managed to talk Dell into upgrading to Vista Home Premium with this deal, and at what price?
#28
Hi there, Any advice on how to go about cancelling an earlier order mine's n preproducion stage.

I'm on the dell site now looking but cant find details :-(
#29
Cool well pro evo and fifa arent a must as I will have them on my 360.

1)I would like to convert dvds as quick as possible of course will this system handle this?

2) I would like to stream to my 360 what version of windows will I need

3) How much will this be with a monitor?

4) Anyone else think prices will come down in the next 2 months?
[mod]#30
If I were buying this I would up the cpu to Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6550 Processor (2.33GHz,1333MHz,4MB cache) add £47. much better imo.

Also for around £10 this wireless key/mouse has to be bette than dells offerings. Logitech™ Cordless Desktop™ EX110

Just ring sales, the number is at the top of every page, or use live chat.

Took the plunge and ordered it :w00t: Will check later and see if there is an est delivery date and post back.

Thanks again for the help and advice, reps added :)
#34
Just cancelled the delayed order from two weeks ago and ordered this one. Pretty much the same package but I added the wireless desktop and the IEEE card (for my camcorder). Came to £16 less than the last deal without a card reader but I'm hoping the video card is better than the last one?
[mod]#35
Tip, if your thinking of having a 19" monitor with this deal or any other of the Vostro base deals, you may want to consider buying the monitor seperately.
Bought with the deal its £94 extra with just the warranty of the base (1yr)
If you buy seperately at the moment its £121 with 3yrs warranty, so for £27 extra you get 2 more yrs warranty. The clip on speakers for the monitor are also on offer at £18.80 if you buy the monitor.
#36
Another tip : If you want the 3 year warranty on the base then never buy it online as Dell will typically call you up a few weeks later and offer a 'limited time' offer of a half price warranty :whistling:
#37
Hi,
Does anyone know whether it is easy to upgrade the graphic card? Is it an Express PCI or ATI card? Thanks
#38
