Now that dell have removed the C521 (£188 then £211) from the line I have been looking round to try and find a replacement base unit only, best I can do this week is this. You need to deselect the 19"TFT as well as reducing the warranty, then add Logitech Cordless Desktop EX110 and select Mouse Included in Wireless Keyboard and Mouse option [subtract £17.62]to get this price.

Remember to reduce the warranty to minimum where applicable and buy via *Quidco for further cashback savings.

22" Monitor is coming up at £76.38 for me

Edited: just realised that you mean £158.63 from base unit price ;-)

Another HOT Dell deal. I like this better than last weeks £188 offer (which I bought for the in-laws). Better graphics, better hard disk, better motherboard (4 SATA ports insted of 2) and better case (twice the 5.25 a 3.5inch drive bays), plus a faster processor and a wireless keyboard/mouse.

I can see this getting nice and hot.

Yes you do need to carefully read what I wrote ;-)

Are these new models as quiet as the older ones (E series) ?

Are these new models as quiet as the older ones (E series) ?
From the manual (posted above), it looks like the Vostro has a single 92mm fan cooling things. As Dell design them for office enviroments I imagine they will be very quiet.

Another lurker in your midst!

Hi all, hope somebody can offer some advice.....

I have £400 max to spend on a PC. I'm not after anything special, but the main thing I'm looking for is the ability to use it as a media centre - basically use it in my bedroom to watch freeview. I'm far from being an expert, but what is the easiest way to get something like this to do that? No real need for a monitor as we are hoping to use our current CRT tv in the short term and buy an LCD in the longer term which will double up as a monitor. Am I right in thinking that I need to buy a pci card (or similar) and then have to upgrade to a Windows Media type OS? I really like the look of the Medion in Aldi which is the right price, has the right processor, right bits plus a 3 year warranty, but comments on here have put me right off.

We don't use the PC for anything more than internet and simple gaming (our eldest is 10) and I expect that whatever I buy will be upgraded in a few years to cope with the cames the kids will throw at it when the reach the terrible teens!

Thanks in advance and keep up the good work! (especiallt MikeT - 3 laptops plus a desktop bought so far this year for family and friends based on your posts!)

This looks like a great deal, for a computer with one of the low-range dedicated graphics cards from your list, MikeT.

On top of that spec the screens also seem good value?

Ideally however I'd like a laptop. It seems (to me, a non-techie) that the best laptop equivalent deal (with dedicated graphics card) is the Acer Aspire 5103 from another thread for £469.69: http://www.simplyacer.com/product/id/202619/LX.AX80X.112

Processor AMD Turion X2 (TL-52 1.6GHz, 2 x 512KB L2 Cache)
Screen 15.4" Crystalbrite (WXGA Acer TFT LCD)
Operating System Windows Vista Home Premium Edition
RAM 2048MB (2GB)
Hard Drive 160GB (Serial ATA 5400rpm)
Optical Drive DVD Rewriter (Records DVDs 8x & CDs 24x & Dual Layer)
Graphics Dedicated (ATI Mobility™ Radeon® X1300 with up to 896 MB of HyperMemory)
Wireless LAN Wireless (802.11a/b/g)
Network Card 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet
Integrated Webcam Integrated less than 1.3mp (This model 0.3 megapixel CMOS camera)
Card Reader 5-in-1 card reader (SD//MS/MS-Pro/MMC/xD-Picture card™)
Expansion Slots 1x PC Card slot (one Type II)
USB Ports 3x USB 2.0 ports
Speakers Intergrated Stereo Speakers
Modem 56.6K Modem
VGA Port 1 External VGA Port
Kensington Lock Kensington lock slot
Charge Time 2.0 Hours
Battery Life 2-3 Hours (This Specific Model 2.5-hours)
Weight 2-3 Kg (This Model 2.82 Kg)
Warranty 12 Months Acer Collect & Return

Would people agree?

How much do I need to future-proof? A GB of RAM and even a 100GB hard drive seems as much as I'd ever need.

What I hadn't realised was I am going to have to spend the cost of a computer over again, to get MS Office, when I already have it on my old computer. Is there a Hot and legal deal to avoid this? I'm a small business, and don't want to be sending cheap-looking non-MS Word or Excel files to people - if that is what Open Office would entail.

Why not use open office it's free and very good - download it on your current computer and take a go - does just about everything that Microsoft does.
#13
Open Office offers everything that Word and Excel can do for free. As said above, give it a try.

great deal, are there any issues with these vostro's being for 'small businesses' tho?

The noise specs for Vostro can be found at http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/corporate/environ/vostro_200_mt.pdf

C521 is at http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/corporate/environ/dimc521.pdf

If you want more try googling "noise site:dell.com filetype:pdf c521" and replace c521 with your machine name.

The Sims Requirements:
Windows 95 or 98
233 Mhz or faster Intel Pentium processor or AMD K6
32MB RAM
2MB Video Card, 16-bit Color Capable - DirectX 7 Certified
Sound card - DirectX 7 Certified
300 MB free hard disk space (additional space required for DirectX 7 installation and Windows swap file)

I took the above list from a sims website, I dont really play games but looking at that list above I would say yes it will easily play it even with the pc doing other stuff at the same time. Looks like very basic requirements to me.

You could always go for Microsoft Office 2007 Small Business Edition OEM (Word, Excel, Outlook Publisher & Powerpoint) at 179.99.

Personally, I'd buy a core 2 duo from dell and get Office basic OEM (Outlook, Excel and Word) for about £100. Core 2 duos are the best processors on the market at the moment.

I think that if you have the install discs and Licence for a retail copy of office it may be possible to transfer to your new kit. Once installed you get I think 30 restarts before it complains your not licenced and gives you a number to ring for activation, as long as you can convince them you no longer have it installed elseware they may activate it or they may require a $30 fee to do so, still cheaper than buying again.

BF2 will run fine with an X1300Pro. You will have to turn down the settings and resolution in newer games, but BF2 is not a demanding game nowadays and this card will be ample enough.

Would you say that the cheapest spec is better than this? I'm looking for a cheap base unit running Windows XP, with enough flexibility to upgrade in the future. The T180 has had good reviews, but not sure how the processors and graphics cards compare.
