Just remember folks that the distance selling rules do not apply to business sales, so no returns if you decide it is not want you want.

Dell has a habit of supplying just about the minimum size of power supply to meet its configuration as sold. If you want to put in a high power card and another hard drive, then you will almost certainly have to replace the psu. None of the graphics cards Dell offers with this model is going to satisfy gamers, so I would hazard a guess at a fairly modest 300W or so.

A quick google seems to support that guess:

http://www.trustedreviews.com/pcs/review/2007/08/29/Dell-Vostro-200/p1

Bear also in mind that Dell cripples its BIOSes so overclocking to improve frame rates is also a no-no.

That said, I'm happy with the Dell I bought recently.

The XP downgrade pricing seems very odd.

On the recent Dell Vostro 200 XP was £10, while at the same time on the Vostro 410 XP was £40.

Why should XP be £47 for this machine? Strange but true :o

On your other link, you can get the 2.2 processor, 2 gig ram and 250 gig hard drive for 202 pounds - delivered. Is that not better than this deal?

COLD

1. Better deals on similar products (as above)

2. Crazy mark ups for adding faster processors.

3. Only windows options, and the site is the only one in AGES not to run on firefox/linux.

Why should those of us who dont want to use windows have to pay and buy something we see as useless?

Any computer with vista that only allows xp by paying an excess should be voted cold

Could anyone please tell me if this ram would work in this system as it works out a lot cheaper or is the pins etc different ?.
Thanks

Microsoft software licenses are retroactive so if you get a licence for Vista Premium you can legally install WinXP on the machine (aslong as you have some WinXP install disks).

[COLOR="Navy"]Hi Mike

One of your biggest fans but this offer [ if you upgrade ] is extremely cold.
I know you've spec'd it for lower end, but would think if upgrading, that today is not best
time to buy. Bought Vostro 200 nine days ago - upgraded to E4600 [ 2.40Ghz]
M/S XP Pro, 3072MB RAM, 320Gb x2 Hard drives, 128Mb Radeon,
16xDVD +/- RW AND 16xDVD, Logitech EX 110 , with 19in 1 media card reader
and NO speakers. Total with VAT and delivery was £353.68.
If you tried same spec today you would pay £531.10 ????
How come it's such a big jump!! - What a difference a week makes.
£177 extra seems excessive and that's with only one H/D

all the best

Ahh my bad, I was going on my experience of WinXP to Win2000 (doesn't help that Microsft have about 5 billion different versions of Vista).

Link broken. But from the spec you've written then you'll be fine. You could also get faster ram (that would happily run at the slower speed of the system). Eg PC2-6400 that runs at 800Mhz . 6400 is more common and therefore might be cheaper.

Vista is lovely, I don't get while people hate on it all the time.

I've been using it since beta, and yes at first it was a bit slower, but with newer hardware it runs like a dream. Keep your XP, I'll stick with Vista.

How much with a monitor?

It says that deal is expired so how can you get it for 149.23?? is there a direct link for that deal cos that sounds much better. Also is there any scope for overclocking these cpus in the dell systems or is it limited by Dell?
thanks!

The £149 deal only lasted a short while.

This is a good deal, with Premium and from the Home site.

It probably has a ~300w PSU (btw, Dell underrate their PSUs) with 4x SATA power connectors, but no molex.

The motherboard has a 16x PCI-E slot.

I'd say the maximum to safely put in it is a 8600GT, or any other similar card that doesn't require an additional power connector (6/8-pin) from the PSU.

But, if there are 2x free SATA power connectors, you could install a better card (e.g. a 8600GTS) that requires a single 6pin power connector by getting 2x 'SATA to molex' adaptors (e.g. eBay item 290252353226) & a single 'twin molex to PCI-E' cable/adaptor (e.g. eBay item 170246034383).

A single-slot 8800GS or HD 3850 may also work by getting the appropriate cables/adaptors as above, but best to confirm this at the Dell upgrade hardware forum.

P.S. Return after finding out which card you'll be going for & I'll try to help you find the cheapest one.

I notice if I buy through the small business site
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukbsdt1&l=en&oc=D082023&dgc=AF&cid=5212&lid=122756

I can get the wireless logitech keyboard for five pounds cheaper. Is there any reason why I should not do this even though I am a consumer?
Thanks
