Mike, you only get £177 if you drop the DVD/RW down to a DVD/ROM drive.
Read this extract from Biglugs post in the other Dell thread.

Quote biglugs1

"EDIT - Just checked and it seems they have changed the spec - the default model now comes with a DVD/RW included, but you can buy it back down to the DVD ROM for £30 less."

I've just run it through on the Dell site to verify the £177 price but it includes ROM only.
Not a problem for most as they'll have a writer in their old PC and they're dirt cheap to buy anyway.
Anglo :)

yes thats why if you read my text in the OP you will see

**Remove the DVDRW for a £30 pre vat discount and the above price.

And further down you see ** against the dvdrw

Mike, do you think this deal may be short lived?

Lower ? spec PC on a auction site is just under £300 delivered,
Dell Vostro 220 Desktop Computer, E5300 Processor
Very fast with Intel Pentium Dual Core processor, 160GB Hard Disk, 2048MB (2GB) Memory, DVD Rom Windows Vista Home Premium with COA & Backup CD, 1 Year Dell Warranty, 15 Months Norton Antivirus software with Recovery CD
[mod]#5
Well they used to go as low as £166 on these a year or so back but I wouldnt bank on this lasting too long.
#6
OK!
I saw the Writer in the spec list but didn't see this line at the time.
**Remove the DVDRW for a £30 pre vat discount and the above price.
Thats what coming off a nightshift does to you, cannae see the woods for the trees. :)

Well done to biglugs1 for spotting the changes.

is it a M...m...mm.. - sorry, can't seem to get it out :-)
#8
ordered one...this time no cheapskate....upgraded HDD....
£188 bare bones...have 3 desktops already so.......this is no error as it allows u to up/downgrade.
Dell can't cancel this....the price is reasonable not cracking as no monitor. U can buy with monitor for 250-300 from ebuyer.
#9
This is a cracking price, You would expect to pay nearly this for a used dual core system .When you add windows 7 a years warranty to that this is a bargain,
#10
Hi I tried going through quidco but what is the working code ?
#11
This is a good price but not very hot as the 248 deal with 21.5 monitor which was scorching hot.
I wouldn't shout about this as its just std deal which all business get.....i have a vostro 220...its a cheap make cf to Dimension or Optiplex which are a solid machine. i mean the chassis is very thin flimsy metal cf to strong and sturdy case of Optiplex/Dimension.

However its the same chassis as Inspiron desktop....(but that has more spec at a higher price)

I disagree - Dell haven't had basic desktops as cheap as this for a while. I'm really tempted to get one to replace my old Dell 5150 which is beginning to creak compared to the two Vostro 200s I have. Throw in a £60 silent graphics card and you will have a solid little desktop base machine which can play most games, all for around £300.

Computer cases collapsing into a heap on the floor due to the thin flimsy metal must be due to the different atmospheric conditions and gravity or perhaps the metal structure is different in the Universe you are in.

Here they are just fine, and I could SIT on one, and I am pretty heavy - It also means I can pick one up without a fork-lift truck :-)

just ordered one. thanks mike

great .. just got one for my Dad :-)

Its a nice small pc, has the usual pci-e slot for a graphics card and two pci slots below that. I got mine with a 3.0Ghz cpu, multi card reader, 4Gb of ram and a 1tb hard drive at the dell outlet for jst over £300 a while ago.

if u want to maybe buy this and upgrade, there is only two hard drive bays and i can't access one of them with my huge graphics card in, the max ram is 4gb and it will only take dual core cpus.
#21
Any one know what discs this comes with ?.( Does it have recovery disc or is everything on HDD)
#22
I got a Vostro 410 base unit from the Dell Outlet last year, my mate also got a 220 - very quiet base units, reliable and one of the few Dell models they dont install loads of unwanted software \ trial ware onto. Loads of USB ports front and back, can easily change PSU \ GFX \ soundcard add extra HD and memory. If you are debating whether to get one then go for it, if you are doing more than just surfing then maybe change CPU to a Core 2 Duo. not a bad PC either to run as a media center as it wont be loud next to your TV. Cracking base unit for the price. Now dual booting it with Windows 7 64-bit on a separate HDD.

Theres a 10gb recovery partition on my Vostro for the Dell System restore if you ever need to rebuild it, used it myself once, worked a treat.

I know what u
mean just cf with optiplex I have both. I got optiplex better spec than this for 150 last year from dell outlet and with warranty.

Could somebody explain something to me regards the Windows 7 that comes with this . Do I actually get a physical copy or if something goes wrong will they charge me £80 for the disc . My last PC i bought from the now long since dead TIME back in 2002 when something went wrong I needed to re-install XP but the swines wanted to charge be £80 for something that in my eyes I had already paid for !!!
#26
fantastic!!
Thanks again Mike T and Big Lugs.

I managed to get the netbook and 24" monitor but have never been able to get Quidco to track at all - Every other site seems to work spot on with Quidco but not Dell - is there a trick to doing it??
Thanks

There is a recovery partition on the HDrive with a mirror of the OS on it. Dell always did send out a disc with the OS on it too but in recent times you occasionally find there is no disc. In those cases I have had no trouble calling or emailing dell and asking them to send the disc out foc.
Not tried it with Win 7 though.
Give the sales team a call or chat on line and see what they say comes in the box. They may not know if its not on their script!
#28
Most likely you will get DVD incl with coa.this has been case every time
dell don't do HD only os
#29
How do I get the Quidco can't find it without the direct link ?
[mod]#30
quidco-dell small business- search for ecode d112204 which I try always to put as a tag on Dell deals.

#32
Mike, would you recommend one of these and getting a HDMI PCI-E card for it? or maybe something else?
#33
The Link takes me to a blank page...
#34
Pardon my ignorance but are these offers for business users only or do you just lie about the business details on the checkout page?
#35
Just put a business name in, be aware that your rights under DSR etc dont apply (that was the case unless its changed ??)
#36
Hi

I saw that you can extend the Norton to 3 years coverage for £16. This may be useful forsome people.

Cheers

That is still the case mate

Can someone who has one of these confirm if it can do Wake On Lan (in the BIOS or otherwise). It is an important feature for what I want to do with it. Thanks.
#39
Nice basic system for someone not wanting much from a PC and would like a brand new system with Windows 7.

That's a lot of people i'd guess.

Good deal.

Has anyone come across any good Dell deals with a processor which supports Windows 7 XP Mode? It costs an additional £110 to upgrade this one...
