Another £40 pounds or so for memory and graphics (another 1 gig and 4350 graphics card) and you have a good everyday PC with win7

This has a FSB of 1066, so I don't see why you can't use 1066 DDR3?

Would it make much difference to the performance adding this?

know this may sound a dumb question, but would this display 1280 x 1080 resolution on my new monitor ?

No spending the cash on ram would be a more useful.

No offence but is this site hotukdelldeals or what? ;-)

The 8400 is only 150 ahead on CPU mark but has 6MB cache as opposed to 2MB (a plus). If you are prepared to spend an extra £100 on the CPU, you might as well wait for another i5/ i7 deal, which there's bound to be within a day or two ;-)

haha, am e8400 cost £115 new by itself or 2 years ago! £100 for an upgrade would be mad!

Oh this is incredibly tempting as I was going to go for a bare bones PC and stick my old memory and HDD in it, but this could work out much better!
How long do these deals usually last for?

Am confused....if I go straight to check-out the price comes to: £333.70

That's quite abit more than the price quoted above.....or am I doing something wrong?

Just tried it, going to top Righthand tab which gives £216.20 you must have changed something.

Including the extra hundred quid you'd be better off buying one of the recent desktop deals like this machine at PC world noted here recently:-

not really. win7 runs great on 1gig of ram. ive got win7 ultimate on a 7 year old dell .. Single Core p4 3Ghz, 1gb ddr2 667mhz ram, 160gb 5,400rpm sata drive, 128mb radeon x300 GFX. runs absolutely great - as good as xp did on it.

I`am sorry m8 but the glitch was just that a glitch,
I managed to get the order through but next time I looked at the web page they had corrected the error.
That was when the previous deals on the 230s where floating about.I was lucky and managed to get the processor upgradeed to quad core for minus £130 ...so added a few extras ..as to make the price a bit more reasonable to dell.
I did have to complain over the phone very badly as they did try to cancel my order ...saying my bank refused payment....but in the end they honoured the deal.
Delivery 2morro for a £450 + base for £169 so you can find the deals...they are there to be had .
Good luck m8 and hope you find one of them glitch`s as I did.

Regards
Kevann

PS: I rarley post deals on here now as you get blasted for telling the truth and then peeps demanding proof accusing you of being a liar ....so I rarley bother anymore.

I'll third that. Why do people find satisfaction with putting others down? :x

I read a thread the other day where a bloke was voting cold cos he'd seen it 2p cheaper a month ago.

I got one of these last year and its fantastic , I had planned to beef it up with more memory etc but there has been no need . I cant believe how quick it boots up . From total shutdown I can be on the internet in under a minute . If you want a replacement for an old banger for using on the internet you really cant go wrong . I wish I had a few quid spare and i'd buy one for my folks .

would this cpu be any faster than my core2duo 2.33ghz ?

Probably not. Look at task manager see if your cpu hits 100% often, if not your better off spending the money on more ram or a SSD.
#34
Whats the maximum ram that this can take is it 4gb?
#35
Would this be a good as a file/media server?

Whats the maximum ram that this can take is it 4gb?

As current yes as has 2 slots, but adding a 2gb to take it up to 3gb is all thats needed at it comes with Win7 32bit. They probably will update the bios to take 4gb dimms but they are somewhat expensive at the moment.
#37
Is a good deal but it's been this since the Vostro 230mt was launched, well actually it was better at launch due to the hard drive upgrades for free cock up!

The same for the previous model, the 220MT which was this price pretty much for the last 15 months or so (except when Dell increase the prices so they can then have a 3 day discount deal etc) :)

So not sure if this really warrants a hotukdeal to be honest.

Just remember that this PC takes DDR3 ram and SATA hard drives (I don't think it supports IDE hard drives without buying a seperate IDE controller card) and your old ram will not fit unless it's DDR3

Seems odd selling it with Win7 with just 1Gig memory. But cheap enough to upgrade.

I know Microsoft have some criteria for getting the Win7 Home licence for OEM the CPU has to be sub 1.7g and the Ram is capped at 1gig perhaps these requirements are the same for desktops.

Microsoft adopted this approach to address their concern that low end system builders were shipping Linux based PCs.

The low cost home licence "Starter Edition" or "Home" cost the system builder a few dollars for the OEM Licence. So you will see a raft of machines with this odd spec just so the system builders can get the low cost Win7 licence.
