Vostro 230 MT (D032304) (not Dell outlet despite what hotukdeals says)

Just noticed Dell have released a new desktop for the small office or home office... the Vostro's are fairly basic but work well. This new model can be ordered with free hard drive upgrades AND free onsite business warranty although these two look as though they're likely to be pricing errors. Go through the options and firstly the warranty choices have 3 options but 2 of them are at no extra costs, further on notice that hard drives (any upgrade) adds £0.00)

Remember Dell small business prices show as excluding Vat and delivery and you have to add to the basket to get final price but the base model is £216.20 inc VAT and Del. Home users can buy these, just enter "Home User" when asked for a business name at the ordering page. I've had 5 Vostros over 2 years and all been totally reliable and great for general tasks.

Good points: now has DVDrw drive at the base price unlike previous Vostro 220
Bad Points: 1Gb ram is too small and needs upgrading for £30 for 2Gb or do it yourself later.

Might be a pricing error but if not then it's a great deal... also watch out for Vostro 220MT's being flogged off soon to make way for this new model!

Yeah, if they actually honour the deal then it's superb.... I know people will knock the Pentium dual core (it's stil pretty much a core2duo) and 1Gb ram is low but easily rectified...for a cheapish price they're pretty good machines but i know someone will say how rubbish they are and un-upgradable etc etc!

I've had great results with Vostro desktops for myself and family.... all been rock solid and perfect for all tasks (but no 3d gaming!)

how i get this deal?
#8
I ordered one this morning when I spotted it on Wizmark's site here - It was then priced at £245 due to a free delivery discount, which has now been stopped. Dell rang me and made some excuse about technical problems during the online order process and cancelled it !

But I am going to order again and see what happens.

Good luck everyone !

how do you get the warranty upgrade?
#11
Choose the middle option at the start of configuration.there are 3 warranty options on the first screen before the configuration page pops up and then there's another warranty option selection on the 'Protect my Dell' tab:

Base Warranty - 1 Year Business Hardware Support add £0.00 - I assume this is the better onsite support instead of:
1Yr Collect & Return Warranty - No Upgrade Selected

oh dear... this doesn't bode well!

Certainly a mis-price with the free 1TB hard drive upgrade. Only available with 32-bit version of Windows 7 though in case you wanted to fit 4GB of ram.

Good point about the memory....shame they don't offer 64bit version.

ordered with 1TB hard drive.
thanks miket
#17
More to the point a socket 775 with DDR3. Which means they are using a P35 motherboard and not seen a cheap one of them, in fact never seen a stripped down on at all.

Only 2 RAM slots which is a backward step for Vostros.
The 4GB DDR3 upgrade is reasonable but no 64 bit version of Windows to choose although it is an option in the spec sheet.
#24
Just read the spec and noticed that the hard drive upgrade isn't to a 1tb drive, it's actually 2x500gb drives. Doesn't bother me but might others.

how do i get this?

Just click on "Go To Deal" in the top right of this page and go through with the order.

If you make no changes it comes out at £216.20.

However Dell may not honour it as the hard disks can be added with no extra costs being added.

It seems to me this page should not even be active as the rest of the Vostros on the page are blank, and some of the figures for optional extras are all over the place.
#28
I can build this cheaper :w00t:

But please dont ask me to provide a build list with prices as I will hide and not post again on this thread :-D
#29
Almost certainly a price error!

Yes the £30 for a 2gb module isn't too bad. Cant build it for that price even without the OS.

As for the mobo they will be Dell custom versions of Foxconn G41MXE or G41MXP(DVI)

Is this not a better deal, slightly more expensive but with a monitor and more RAM and Quad Core CPU...

Still think this is a good deal for those who don't want a monitor, so hot from me.

It's a good deal with the monitor but of course Vista isn't as preferable as Windows 7 but horses for courses I guess....

I believe that you can upgrade to Windows 7 for around £12 and there is 3% Quidco and topcashback which would almost cover the upgrade. The details are in the thread.

You are right though, horses for courses.

Possibly not, the Vista to Windows 7 upgrade programs "officially" stopped at the end of January - hence old Vista machines being sold of cheap :)

However, it seems some people have been lucky (http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/618339/acer-pc-with-19-pc-monitor-amd-phen/showpost.php?p=7939871&postcount=28)"

Looks like a major cock up by Dell - I suspect lots of people will get phone calls cancelling their orders ;( voting HOT regardless, just incase :)

Funny really, over on the 'Home' part of Dell's site it's tricky to find a cheap system with 32bit, they seem to supply 64bit as standard, personally I'd rather have 32 as i don't have any apps. that'd need >3GB.

http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/618339/acer-pc-with-19-pc-monitor-amd-phen

It’s a very poor Quad core though; a 1st generation Phenom @ 2.1GHz which is roughly equivalent to a 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo when running typical applications which are only optimised for 1 or 2 cores. Even for applications optimised for 4 cores a decent Intel dual core will match or beat it.
