Can anyone report how these compare in terms of build and quiet to the E520 / E521 range, or are they more like the lighter-weight C range ?

Are they available at all with XP ??
#5
not available with XP as yet.

Seem like the direct replacements for the old E520s yes.

this is a nice deal for anyone who missed the misprice, upgrade to the 22" and get a gig of ram from crucial and it only works out a bit more than the mispriced for the same spec pretty much (lesser processor though)
#6
Is it worth the £30 to upgrade to "Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E4300 Processor"?

Yep, I think (correct me anyone if im wrong) that core 2 duo is much more energy effecient and powerfull over pentium D.

The E2140 is a C2D same as E4300 with a 1Mb cache instead of a 2Mb cache (E2xxx = 1Mb, E4xxx = 2Mb, E6xxx 4Mb)

Mm. I've been put off now thinking I'll be able to get a better deal later, but I think the £30 upgrade is worth it - 200mhz per core added clock speed (which is not insignificant) and the added cache should make it significantly faster.

I would for the extra £30.

Is it worth upgrading to Vista Business for the extra £58.75? Or is there a cheaper way of upgrading to Vista Premium/Business without going through Dell?
suspended#13
go for the E4300 if you want (theyll be quite fast anyway)- any1 know why dell dont have the E4400 in there systems yet? (the E4500 is out before August and the E4300 will begin to be phased out)

You NEED Vista home PREMIUM - basic is just warmed over XP

I'd go for the 2GB RAM and probably the 22" monitor

If only you could overclock dells!!!

I think you can visit their website to get premium but I don't know how much this is or if it's in the UK (i think its in the US atm)

Vista business doesnt have the fancy graphics, just the business stuff like good backups (good naming there!)
#14
Yep its a shame this deal doesnt have an upgrade available for vista premium, which is a must, if your going to have a good system like this it shouldnt be wasted on vista basic.
#15
I recently ordered the Inspiron 530 with pretty similar specs....would anyone recommend this new Vostro model over it, or should I stick with the 530?
suspended#16
if you got vista home premium with the inspiron then stick with it

defo stick with it because u'd need vista ultimate which is way over priced

I assume you got vista home premium or XP

although I would have at least 2gb of RAM fo vista so upgrade with a matched pair from ebuyer (i would download CPU-Z and find out your RAM speed in Mhz and get the same stuff for compatibility)

Make sure its DDR2 though

If you have any questions come to buildyourown.org.uk and post a question in the memory section (u'll get teased a bit for having a dell but it's a good site)

I ordered the 530 aswell, with a 22'' monitor - from the deal here - http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79647

For me the inspiron deal is better because of the vista premium. The same system specs I ordered on the inspiron for £481 is £464 on this deal, a difference of £17, however I have premium on the inspiron I ordered and I dont think I could get a upgrade version of premium for £17.

I agree, thats the only major let down of this deal. I have just been on the phone with dell, gave them the code and asked if they could put vista premium on there for me, but they said they couldnt configer that system with premium, dont know why.
#19
thats exactly my stumbling block...I got exactly the same 530 with an E4300, 22" screen and Premium. I think the only other difference is the Inspiron has a 250gb drive, whereas this has a 320gb drive.
[mod]#20
Although this is available through Dell home site it is primarily meant as a small business startup range so thats why its got Vista Business and maybe they didnt yet test it with Premium so dont offer it with it in case of incompatabilities
#21
Almost forgot....this has the 1yr business support, whereas the Inspiron doesn't.
#22
Anyone know if I have problems with vista would it be straight forward to load XP onto It?, I have a XP home disc from a now defunk Dell machine? Thanks

If you mean Aero Glass, then Business does have it. It's got most of the features of Home Premium (main exceptions being Media Centre and Movie Maker) but gets some extras like EFS. I have a copy of Vista Business on my PC as I got it free from uni as part of the MSDN academic alliance, but I've barely used it as I have a Mac now which quite frankly is much better, let down only by the ubiquitous vendor support for Windows.

I didnt notice the better hard drive. 250gb is plenty for me anyway. You have ordered the exact same spec machine as me. What is your estimated delivery date, mine is the 26th.

Yep...26th as well. I also ordered the great deal on the Vostro laptop for the missus which fingers crossed will arrive on the 30th.

Bit slow on the pickup with this but how using the dell site can you get to browse the Vostro range in "home" section ? I can see it in small business but I'm not a business so need to order via home site. tia

You cant, but it is there just use the ecode from the first post in the thread to go to the deal via quidco or click go to deal from the OP.
#29
has anyone managed to get this with XP yet?
#30
Ive a few question about this and will be really greatful for some advice.

Can anyone recommend a graphics card that will work with the stock PSU in this?

Also how much better is the x1300 pro compared to a Geforce 5500FX?

Also, if i sold the X1300pro, how much do you reckon ill get for it?
#31
Anybody help?
#32
10 - 20 quid for the x1300pro max... the x1600 can be had from anything between 40 - 60 quid new
#33
see post below
#34
sorry forget my post about a better deal (dunno if its appeared yet) as it doesnt include VAT or shipping.
#35
ordered one today, upgraded to core 2 duo e4300 and 2gb ram and had the speakers (giving them to my bro, his are rubbish) £411.

BTW rang dell about XP and no matter how hard i pushed they wouldnt do XP, but no matter, will format and install XP when i get it (XP drivers for the vostro are on the dell support site).
#36
Has anyone had their system in the build stage yet? Mine is suppose to be delivered monday 30th but still not even in the process of being built yet

I would give them a ring, they will check for any delays, and 'prioritize' your order.
#38
Normally Dell take a week from order to deliver, but just at the moment, orders on the main site are taking some time. I have two orders placed a week ago for a different Vostro and Dimension pc, which are both still pre-production.
Time to grit teeth, but it's a pain when you're used to waiting a week

I ordered a inspiron desktop and it came in 5 days. Some monitor parts have a delay on them at the moment though.

Yeah ive ordered before and it normally comes in a week or so.

I ordered this Vostro but without a monitor. Hmm, might have to call them up as I go on holiday next week and wont be back for a month
