Makes quite a good basic desktop replacement with lots of upgrade options.

I phoned Dell today about this package because some upgrades don't seem to be available online.
I want a 9 cell battery and ideally XP Pro.

Here's what I was told:

BATTERY: a 9 cell for only £10 more (+ VAT)
....................a 9 cell and a 6 cell for £20 (they said at first), then £30, then £40 (+ VAT).
.................................(Apparently the woman was misreading her screen!)

XP PRO: I was told they could supply it with XP Pro instead of Vista® Home Premium
..................at an extra charge of £30 + VAT.
..................Although it's a shock to pay extra for an 'old' operating system at least it was available
..................on this package. When I've asked Dell on other packages they've said no.

QUIDCO: Am I correct in thinking that it is impossible to claim a Quidco commission
...................if I buy from Dell via the phone? There seems to be no way to get these extra options
...................via Dell's website but I do have an emailed quote from Dell.

Q ? -----> Is it possible to use this and / or an invoice after purchase with Quidco?
....................If anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful.

Keep smiling, Wilf.

Don't know why this was expired because it's still going strong up to 27/02 by the looks of it.

Wilf2go, request a mod to un-expire it.
#4
Yep price is still £386

Done ;-)
With a 5% voucher coupon usable from 25-27th it would be best to wait now before buying providing dell dont alter the goal posts between now and then.

So with that and quidco that will be less than £350 might have to wait and see on this one. Really want a 17inch

Thanks MikeT.

The 5% voucher code can be found here.

No. The same laptop is available on the Home site too with the same spec but it's about £80 dearer.

Yes, you're right.

My mistake was that I was going through the £316 deal (with different ecode), then adding components to get it up to this spec.

Added Truelife and dedicated 128 graphics and I'm getting £409?

Great!

Anyone any ideas what sort of offers Dell have planned for March? I need a new PC, but I'm not desperate ... might it be worth waiting?

You don't have to be a Business user to buy it at this price - see my post #12, or click here to see a screenshot to get it for only £353.68 , after all the discounts & cashback.

I added the 17" true life screen upgrade and a 128mb 8400m graphics card and the total after Quidco and discount code is about £437 delivered. I will be ordering mine on monday i think at that price!
Is the true life screen upgrade worth it or would i be better off sticking with the standard screen and paying a bit more for the 256mb graphics upgrade?
#22
Voted hot. I already ordered this 3 days ago (I didn't post it as at the time other dell deals posted which have now expired seemed much better - this is a model I specally wanted )
I got it at the £386 price via quidco but without the 5% discount code. Is this code only available from monday?
I'm wondering if its worth trying to cancel my order which is still at pre-production as I could use the difference in price to add Trueife for example?
I'm not sure if its worth it but any advice much appreciated. Thanks.
#23
how long do these take to get delivered?

Screen upgrade definitely better than the superior graphics card (256Mb or not) - unless you really need the latter.
The majority of users won't be able to tell the difference between the two GPUs offered, unless playing certain games maybe.

Definitely worth it if you can manage to cancel & re-order . May be best to see S c 0 TT y & MikeT's posts lower down about TL before you do so.

Cheers for that crossbow, will get my order in on monday !

This 5% discount coupon, will it be usable on the vostro 1000, mike?

Thanks

Good offer, I wouldn't personally upgrade to truelife as I hate the reflection on it.

Yes, no problem if it's £299 or over. And & any Desktop/Notebook applies - see rayman's voucher post.

There are others on here, apart from MikeT, who know a few things too ;-)

Could you be a little more specific please - I was just about to advice my neighbour to get one with TL. He's in his 80s & I thought TL was better quality, specially visually.

Go to this site and look at the images that have been posted on the truelife screen.

Before ordering a truelife screen go to PC World and look at the other makes there with reflective screens as some just cant get on with them at all, personally I think its better with Truelife, I have several dell laptops here and will always go for the truelife one if I can get my hands on it.
They are a bit like Marmite though!

Thanks S c 0 TT y & MikeT, that was very helpful :-D. I'll call him over & show him the difference & let him decide for himself

Not that i think i will change my mind, but how would this Dell compare to this Acer? http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.200-5525.aspx

For a start...

1. Athlon CPU - this has a better Intel Core 2 Duo
2. Only 1Gb RAM - this has THREE
3. Only 80Gb HDD - this has 160Gb
4. No camera - this has a 2MP built-in

Need I go on :whistling: (actually that's probably about it!)
#35
I know the obvious differences, but for about £100 price difference (with a graphics card upgrade on the Dell) are the other changes worth the money?
And how bad is the Acer to be at such a low price for a 17" er?

If your main concern is to keep costs as low as possible, then go for the Acer (512Mb to 1Gb RAM upgrade minimum would be required though). It's not a bad laptop, but the much superior Dell for only £5 more than the Acer (after all the discounts, etc) is simply a no-contest.

For the Dell, if it was me, I'd only get the TL screen (if preferable) & omit the GPU upgrade. For normal, everyday tasks a better GPU makes almost no difference at all, especially when the system has 3Gb of dedicated RAM. As an example, my desktop has a 256Mb X800XT Platinum GPU, while my neighbour's only integrated. There's no noticeable difference between the two - except in games of course. The other components are similar btw.
#37
Thanks for the advice. I won't go for TL but thought about upgrading the battery, which can only be done over the phone. Does anyone know if I do the battery upgrade over the phone but the initial order online if my quidco will still be valid. I'm new to all this and didn't know if somehow the quidco trace will be affected?

Definitely worth it if you can manage to cancel & re-order . May be best to see S c 0 TT y & MikeT's posts lower down about TL before you do so.

from Dell:
"Two memory slots. Max memory capacity 2 GB DDR2-SDRAM. Note: In order to get dual channel bandwidth capability, both slots must contain memory modules and they must be of the same size and configuration. Each module can hold up to 2GB thus equating to 4gb in total RAM for the machine. What they've done is added 1x 2GB chip in one module and 1x 1GB chip in the other.
