Note it is Vista Business.

There are things in Vista Home Premium that are NOT in Vista Business.

For example no Media Centre, so you cannot connect an XBox to a Vista Business PC.

sorry to being so amatuer but i have a few questions:

Is this computer/offer only avaliable to businesses - i.e. can i buy it as a private individual
What is the limitation of vista business compared to vista home (i am an XP user)

My preference is XP over the Vista Operating System - That's all !

In any case by selecting XP Pro, you will also receive a Vista Business Installation disc if ever you wanted to upgrade from XP at a later time !

Last year I ordered a Vostro which by default came with Vista Business - however, I ordered it by phone and was able to change for Home Premium for the same price.

I can only see that as positive, and far less disabling stuff on start up needed! :-)

There are plenty of other Media Centres available, if you really want that

Couple of quick questions:

If one selects the XP option it comes up as: "Genuine Windows Vista® Business (SP1) with XP Professional installed and Vista & XP Media-English" What exactly does this mean ? Does it have both Vista and XP pre-installed and does this complicate matters if one just wants to use XP ?

How quiet are these machines nowadays ?

You can still connect to the Xbox 360 using Windows Media Player 11, thats what I use to stream video.

It has XP Pro installed !

You will also have the XP & Vista Media Installation disc supplied. You can upgrade to Vista Business at a later time, if you wish.

These machines are very quiet. Can hardly hear them !

You will not get quidco on this as it is a business machine and the 4% cashback they offer is only on home systems....

Sorry....

Wrong.

Quidco even have a portal for getting it... look for: "Dell Small/Medium Business cashback"

"Dell pays cashback based on the order value excluding VAT and delivery charges."

Very sensible of them too.
All these feeble under- powered laptops, with small dim screens, when what you want is a nice clear, big, bright display when your eyes are getting on a bit

By the way,. just to show how good a deal this is... Dell outlet currently have a refurbished one of these on their site (exact Specification but the MT instead of the ST) and they are wanting £343.88 + £19 Delivery + Vat for it = £417.32, and that is without the monitor...!!!

If you plan on upgrading the graphics card or fitting lots of storage, think twice before getting a slimline.

I needed a PC after mine died and I got an awesome deal for a Dell C521 slimline. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic machine and the build quality is only bettered by the Dell server I subsequently bought.

The downsides though:
- Thin but the same height as a regular tower - hardly saving much space
- Every single expansion card has to be low profile, with a low profile bracket (bought or hacked down) - it's the second bit that caught me out!
- Thought I could replace the case if needed - think again, me, it's a BTX layout...
- No extra drive bays - I had to pull the DVD writer and card reader from mine to fit an extra HD inside (both had to go because the airflow was too limited)
- DVDRW mounted vertically - reliability of burns wasn't great, whatever the manufacturers say.

It's ideal for non-power users though, I've had a good couple of years out of mine without any real issues, only the niggles listed above. I recommend Dells to everyone when there's an offer on.

Does this have a network card built in to connect to broadband router via cable or do i have to add the wireless card to make it broadband ready
#24
Couldn't get the code to work, coming out at 428.

What am I doing wrong?

Or owt better for general use at this price?
#25
Great price for a good desktop but be aware that this is the slimline version, so you won't be able to fit a replacement graphics card for serious gaming. Actually on reflection this isn't a great price - this is a fantastic price! If you reckon the screen alone is worth £120 then you are looking at £250 for a fast processor, 4GB of memory and a graphics card (even though it isn't top of the range). How can you not be tempted??
