That was the 1st generation i7 mobile and you were very lucky to get that deal.
But the 2nd generation i7 mobile is in a whole other league; much better performance and it has integrated graphics so you can use switchable graphics which leads to decent battery life and better thermals when not using the nVidia card. You get the same idle power draw as an old i3 with integrated graphics with this quad with discrete graphics. It’s 2 jumps ahead of the previous generation.

Seriously fast processor for a very decent price; but such a pity Dell charge so much for updates.
#8
You can also get an XPS 17 with a similar spec for £748.09 using the same coupon code. Differences are:

4GB RAM
1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M Graphics Card
17.3" HD+ WLED True-Life (1600x900)

Dell system ID is N00X7M05.

Edited By: Agharta on Mar 19, 2011 13:31: It had the wrong Dell system ID

Yup, in terms of sheer number crunching this mobile processor is seriously capable.

Stick a boot SSD in this thing and it will start-up windows and progs half an hour before you knew you wanted it on.

Unless you need the portability of the XPS 15, you might want to consider the bigger XPS 17.

The XPS 17 (N00X7M05) with a 2630QM, 4GB of RAM, an Nvidia 550M & a 640 GB HDD, after all discounts, works out at £748.05 delivered. I'm not sure what extra you might get off this with Quidco.

The XPS 17(N00X7M06) ups the RAM to 6GB and the graphics card to the Nvidia 555M for an extra £45.

3. Is huge so you can't really lug it around

Yes coupon works with that spec, but price is £833.59 inc vat + delivery, because of the ridiculous price for the 1080p screen.

With this I could take over the world mwahh haha

;)

The XPS 17 inch, for a similar price, has only 4gb RAM, 1gb GFX and an i5. The main difference being an i5, not an i7, so hardly like for like.

Am tempted by this XPS 15 actually!

It is an i7 as I gave the wrong code; it should be N00X7M05.
The GPU on the XPS 17 is faster but with less RAM which seems a good trade-off on a GPU of this performance using the native resolution of the standard screen.
If you want a faster GPU with the XPS 17 you are better off with system code N00X7M06 as for £793 (£45 more) you get the GT 555M 3GB and 6GB of RAM.

Depends how often you buy a laptop. It is powerful today but in 3 years to run new software it will still be powerful enough!

Extra £90 for a bigger screen, higher res and better GPU?

The screen res is still abysmal for a 17" laptop compared to others available.
#32
Don't think I'll buy another Dell laptop after the amount of problems with my xppsm1530. The screen quality is ****, I'm wondering if it's the same with the new XPS system.
#33
Bought one of these just over a week ago (9th) and it arrived yesterday (18th), much earlier than the advertised 20 day lead time.

I upgraded the screen to the Full HD (would definitely recommend it) and used the 10% discount and 6% cashback offer Quidco had available at the time - so came to ~£820 after cashback.

As others say, don't mix up the sandy bridge processor (2630QM) on offer here with the inferior processors on offer in other XPS 15 configurations as the performance levels available in the 2nd gen processors are vastly superior.

Here's a good review of this very exact configuration:-

If you'd actually seen this laptop in the flesh you'd know it actually is pretty pretty!
#35
any reason you cant get bluray on this laptop anymore? screen quality on my m1530 is ok, xps 15 is about the same (not great tho..) with the standard screen, as my housemates got it. You can also get the xps 17, core-i7, full HD 3D screen, 3gb gt 555m (3d) graphics card, 6gb ram, blu ray, and 640gb hdd for £1000 i think if you want to go all out.

But isn't that screen better than this screen with the higher res? Or no?

The screen res is still abysmal for a 17" laptop compared to others available.

It has the typical resolution for a laptop screen of that size!
Less would be poor and more would be good but it is just average.
What do you expect at that price with the other components, 1080P?
#38
greavesy1984
why does everyone buy a computer or laptop thats more powerful than they need.

You could apply that to everything in life. Most people buy using a balance of needs and wants. Why buy a £500 Tag Heur when a £10 Casio will tell you the same time? Why buy a 50" TV when a 19" TV will show you the exact same program?

It's not the prettiest laptop in the flesh, but it certainly isn't ugly. I think being rather generic looking is its biggest crime. Performance of these new SB mobile CPUs look truly phenomenal.

Price is about right...

Last gen i3 and i5 system are coming down alot in price - they run cool, and not much slower. Unless you really need a quad, might be worth a while to look elsewhere.
