Intel Core i7 740QM

Nvidia 435 GT Graphics 2GB

This is a superb machine, will play COD Black Ops etc no problems, £779 on the site, but if you use the code NTHH9VBKGP4NC7 for 10% off, it brings it down to £701. Plus you can try for quidco.

This is superb I think.

And I doubt very much that it had this specification.

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/dell-xps-15-core-i7-740-4gb-ram-500/786793 This deal was amazing but sadly only lasted 2 hours. £701 with the constant 10% off voucher and then quidco on top is the same price it has been since then. I've been watching every day! Probably still good value but I'm waiting until they make an effort to reduce the price or throw in a freebie of some kind.

To be fair we still don't know if it was a genuine deal. I got one, very good machine but upgrade the screen!

For £700 you need at least a blu-ray drive

That was a freak price and best not to compare with that or you'll never buy anything waiting for another deal like that.

Intel are releasing a new mobile quad core platform next week which offers significant benefits over the current one so I wouldn’t buy the current platform unless you get a real bargain which I wouldn’t say this is.
It’s a good price but I’d wait a week and see what happens. The new platform is 2 steps forward rather than the usual 1; it’s a new architecture and a process shrink all in one. So a tick and a tock in Intel’s parlance.

Has been this price for ages.... they even just recently extended the 10% xps code.

It did, however it also tells me its not worth putting deals on here because some HUKD members are a bunch of bankers.

You may be confusing it with this machine Psoleos which is less well specced. Using WW15L0P2?B0D1S coupon you can get it for £479, which ain't bad.

XPS 15 BTS

If you look at the links that were posted you'd see it was the same specification; when that deal was first posted many folks were put off as the price was unbelievably low.

I'm not sure the new XPS is quite the same spec as the old; for instance I don't think it has the magnesium chassis or backlit keyboard (as a standard) - but then I have to say that as I have one of the old model XPS ;)

I still think this is a good deal, at this moment in time you wont find better for the money. And because of the negative comments other people will not benefit from this deal.

You're right this is a good deal; it was first posted a couple of months back (using a different 10% code) http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/dell-xps-15-i7-processor-2gb-graphi/785429?page=1 but that doesn't make it less of a deal and I very much doubt the £496 offer will be repeated.
#25
I also doubt the £496 deal will ever be back, but the £701 price (i.e. £779-10% - quidco) is the normal price and has been around since release, so certainly don't feel the need to rush out and get it. The 10% vouchers constantly renew. I thought there would be some kind of Christmas offer but they haven't dropped a penny since release! Bear in mind the VAT increase in a few days too.
#26
Hmm, I have been looking for a graphics capable machine and if I did not have to wait 3 weeks I would buy this straight away. As I say I have been scouring the web and have found nothing this good for the money.
#27
Im waiting for a deal with the 1080p screen and blu-ray drive, since they want £170 and £90 respectively to add this to any xps 15, which increases the price massively. Sony only charge £70 for the 1080p screen upgrade

You're talking about Sandy Bridge but we kind of expect that to launch on the ultra high-end like Core i7 did with it's Extreme Edition and even then the mobile variant took a while to come out. What I mean is, if you need a laptop buy it when you need it or you'll be forever waiting as technology constantly evolves.

The replacement for the high end LGA1366 platform that supports the Extreme Editions is not due for ages. Next week’s release is for the mainstream desktop platform and for the mobile quads which is why I mentioned it.

Waiting 8 days is a little short of forever! For anyone that really requires serious CPU horsepower combined with other compelling features in a laptop I say wait 8 days as from what I’ve read the new platform is a bigger step forward than normal especially for mobile quads.

It is a big step forward but what I was saying was if you remember the launch of the 'Core i series', it was only the absolute top-end that launched and mobile CPUs came about 6-8 months later.

Even if the new platform does launch in 9 days at CES 2011, it won't appear in laptops for probably at least a month as manufacturers try to clearance or dump old stock and charge those keen to be on the bleeding-edge inflated prices.

That was then and this is now. Intel’s launches vary a lot and sometimes they lead with Server CPUs first or desktop or mobile. For example the first dual core successors to the Pentium D CPUs were the mobile only Core Duo.

It’s not a matter of ‘even if’, they’ve been formally announced, it’s a done deal.
You can already buy quad core SB laptops in Singapore and probably elsewhere and manufacturers have announced products. They will be available sooner than you think.
I agree on pricing though as no doubt they will be mainly available in higher priced systems initially. That’s why I suggested that it’s currently more worthwhile for people that actually utilise the performance of these CPUs as for them the premium makes sense. For people that buy quad core laptops when they don’t really need to it doesn’t make sense to pay a premium for SB.

Engadget has also reported the availability of Sandy Bridge CPU's inside the HP laptops in Singapore already. I reckon it's worth the wait even for couple of weeks .

It was only available for £500 for a couple of hours from what I've read - a definite pricing-error, you didn't really 'miss' it as such. But you can get the i3 version for about £550 these days, and unless you're actually going to use all four cores, there's not a lot in it performance-wise.

For the record, on the graphics, the GT 420M is simply a lower-clocked GT 435M, the chip is the same.

sorry if this is a bit of topic, can i ask, do you need an i7 processor to be able to edit HD video from a camcorder or would a lower spec processor be capable ?
#36
Actually they bumped this model up to £799 for Christmas (!) but it had previously been £749 before any discounts so £779 isn't the lowest 'normal' price it's ever been.

For anyone thinking of buying one, you need the B+RG LED 1080p screen, the basic one is just plain awful from what I've heard - poor contrast, low resolution, etc.

Any dual-core would be fine, it will just be a touch slower (but as I always say to people who insist you must have X or Y, you don't actually need anything special to edit HD video and unless you have the two machines side-by-side to compare you won't miss it) - the amount of times I've heard myths like you must have a quad-core or Core i7 to edit video is sickening and all part of some marketing ploy.

You could get by with a Core i3 or Core 2 even and that means if you want this XPS 15 machine, the base model would do just fine for you.

You don’t need quad core but for heavy duty editing of HD video you will find significant performance gains provided your software scales to 4 cores or more.
Take a look at the link below for an example using Premiere CS4.

Core i3 2.93GHz 177 seconds
Core i7 2.93GHz 75 seconds

http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2009-desktop-cpu-charts-update-1/Adobe-Premiere-Pro-CS4,1404.html

Obviously that is just one example and not all aspects of the workflow will show such large gains.

He said 'do I need' it - the answer is no, as far as I know no software to date demands a high-end quad-core. I agree there is no doubt the quad-core being faster in heavily-threaded apps but you've stated Premiere CS4, and if someone can afford that package, then it follows that a quad-core machine is a drop in the ocean.

nige5000 can still edit HD video on a Core i3 or Core 2 dual-core machine.
